does anyone still watch the eurovision song contest?
i don't as i find it cheesy and what's the point of asking other member states to vote for the UK when they hate us.
I suppose years ago it was a fun contest and the voting wasn't so bad but things are different now and no artist is ever going to be as famous as abba.
Many of the countries hate our stand on irag/afghanistan and other issues like the euro so voting is always going to be fixed.
Im sure many states agree in advance to give each other 10 points and lets face it the germans only won because they are helping greece out with cash followed by a swift invasion once they miss a payment.
And we all remember how germany treats the citizens of the countries it invades dont we so everyone is shit scared so it was a good idea to make them feel loved before they send in the gestapo for answers to their questions.
we know we are hated so isn't it time we ditch this rubbish.
No chance - While we still have Eurovision we still have humour biggrin Come on its a fantastic way to see how politically we stand together or not as the case may be :D It has nothing to with singing lol
Bit harsh on the Germans there Ty

nothing wrong in being harsh on the germans lol
Ididnt even know it was on till it came on (does that make sense?) dunno Didnt watch it though.
I used to think it was funny but it just isnt the same withouth Terry Wogan (not that I even watched it when he was on).
This year actually I thought it was better than in previous years.
There was actually a lot of good tunes, and that Romanian bird in those tight black trousers well............was worth watching it just for that.
Our song was rubbish let's be honest. It did not deserve to come last jeeze...........how bad was Spains song?
But.............we all know it is an opportunity for the rest of Europe to piss us off. It is certainly tactical voting by them and I have to say I was hoping we would finish last, the wooden spoon is better than no spoon at all. lol
I say leave it on the telly....highly entertaining and Pete Waterman is a wally anyway, and seeing as it was his song made me laugh all the louder.
No I don't watch it now - used to like it years ago, then I got fed up when all the newer entrant eastern countries started ganging up against us.
Plim
I am putting my head over the parapet and stating that I whatched it this year with one of my little uns...........and thoroughly enjoyed it. I thought the winning song was good and there was lots of others that were really good too. I have not watched it for years, but this years will make me want to watch it next year. Roll on Eurovision 2011

Hi,
We would have to agree with most of the above. There were some good songs this year, less radical and more along the lines of the 'good years'. We probably have some of the best composers and song writers in the UK and all we seem to come up with is 'crap'. We have had the catchy 'Skooch' if I remember correctly but none of them have had any real presence or depth in the lyrics. Just compare our sad entries to the winners of the past.
OK, so we really have a good one for next year, but what can be done about the voting?
Some of this years songs even from the lesser countries were reasonable but it seems that in the main once a group of the top 5 is established then everyone seems to vote their higher points to ones around that group. Its almost as if the results from country number 5 or so are influenced by those from 1 to 4. This should not be the case but WE really can't believe that nearly every country will vote for the same small group of songs. Quite clearly the eastern European and Balkan countries vote for their neigbhours as do some others. If they have such little interest in Eurovision why don't they have their own contest and lets have Eurovision back in western Europe where the voting should at least be a little more genuine and based on the merits of the song not whatever the song is, we'll give it 'douze points'.
Smooth2 now off soapbox!
Let me start by saying I'm not a fan of Eurovision.
The thing is, is that the rest of Europe take it seriously. They treat it as rather a prestigious competition. It's only Britain that regards Eurovision as a joke. While other countries enter top pop stars (the Greek female singer last year has sold more albums than Madonna in her home country) singing some decent songs, Britain has failed soap stars and failed reality show contestants performing cheesey, generic, by-numbers pop pap. The voting has nothing to do with other countries hating us, they simply recognise a country who doesn't give a fig about the competition so they don't vote for a rubbish song sung by someone who can't really sing. Remember when Katrina And The Waves represented The UK a few years back? A real band playing a good song and we destroyed the opposition. When rock band Lordi represented Finland a few years ago, they received the highest number of votes ever. Again, a real band playing a song that was fun and appealed to people of all ages and all tastes.

What he said.
Also, let's add that it's not surprising that countries with similar cultures vote for each other's entries - the punters vote for songs that sound like the stuff they hear all the time. What's bizarre is that here in the UK we enter a song that wouldn't trouble the charts, because it's nothing like the average UK single release, then wonder why it sinks without trace.
Kaz, it's really nothing to do with a fear of failure. It's just the opposite. The UK has produced some of the greatest bands/artists the World has ever seen. The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, Led Zeppelin and loads of others all came from here. We don't need to prove that our music is the best.
Quickly, off the top of your head, think of bands or artists from France, Germany, Spain, or Eastern Europe who have become mainstream stars outside of their own countries. How many can you come up with?
I get the feeling that that's why the UK treats Eurovision as a joke. We don't need to prove ourselves musically. We've been doing so since the early 1960's.
Nowhere near 1000 words, but that's all I need.

Musically we are proven to be the best over decades.
The Eurovision is full of Europeans, who would not know a good song if it popped out of their arses. lol
Nothing to do with fear of failure, blimey we have had to endure 13 years of Labours failings, and that scared the shit out of me.
We should employ a suicide bomber as next years British entry

If you believe the stories Staggs, there are plenty to choose from in the UK.

Skooch were much more terrifying, and did more harm to our international reputation...

Given that they built their entire career on ripping off people like Willy Dixon would Led Zepp not have to be entered by the US?
we don't care if we quit the eurovision song contest or not
BUT
we should definitely stop broadcasting this total shite into ppls living rooms
yes we use the change channel button but it is on BBC1 and thats unforgiveable

I think you will find Led Zep were not the only band to have done this.
Plus as far as I can remember damages were paid to him, and a far bigger sum than he would have got for the actual song.
To say they built their whole careers on the back of this is a massive over statement.
Yes a couple of songs but all songs on all nine albums? Yeah thought not.
I think in the old days of the 60's many big bands stole either sounds or actual lyrics from others, it was only when Zep were thought to be getting huge was anything actually done about it.....
Still Zep are THE biggest rock band ever, and no ammount of sour grapes about their music will change that fact....ever.
eurovision. the price of freedom.
See if hitler had on the war it would be an evening of his face on the tv and Oom-Pah music.
trenchcoats knocking on the door to ask why you are not watching.
personally id rather have an evening of Allo Allo.
my god what have we done!

YOU have your opinion. Jimmy PAge was a chancer who ripped off the format of the Jeff Beck group, ripped off loads of different blues artists and generally produced a caricature of a rock band. Selling lots of albums to American teenagers is not actually a good measure of musical quality - unless you also hail Miley Cyrus and Alannis Morisette as great artists. Now that would be ironic.

:laughabove::laughabove::laughabove:
Only sold albums to " American teenagers " ?
Check the record sales......that is what makes records certainly NOT peoples opinions.
Check the WORLD sales....silly billy.
For the record...#
To date, the group is reported to have sold more than 300 million albums worldwide, including 109 million sales in the United States alone.
So that leaves 200 million albums for the rest of the world, check that against other bad for a chancer.
