I don't like musicals... in fact I detest the idea of musicals.
However, I was pleasantly surprised by Sweeney Todd.
maybe the subject matter and 'old London' had something to do with it?
the Lee Marvin musical western?
which was that?
You know the one... Lee's character had a bad-brother with a steel nose and a drunken horse, as well as himself.
There was a muddy street through the town.
that was good.

I can't abide musicals. I just can't get my head round people behaving normally one moment then breaking out into song the next. Positively screwy.
Having said that, although it's not an actual musical but it does come close, my favourite film is The Blues Brothers. Bitchin' music, ridiculous car chases and bloody funny comedy.

Rocky Horror Picture Show.
West Side Story.
Dirty Dancing - does that count? If not, then Grease.

rolleyes That was Cat Balou.
I prefer theatre musicals myself they take your breath away with the talent that is displayed in most of them.
However, the thread is Film musicals so:
1) Cabaret -as much for the social and sexual comment as the brilliant songs
2) Jesus Christ Superstar - I dont know how(much) to love it (the film)
3)The Little Shop Of Horrors ...I was going to say Mary Poppins but, well, suddenly Seymour was standing besides me

Ok:
Fiddler on the Roof
King and I
Sweeney Todd
Maybe:
Mack and Mabel
Promises, Promises
Follies
Or:
Oliver!
West Side Story
Hello, Dolly! ( I quite like the ones with punctuation ;))
But then there are:
Funny Girl
Gypsy
The Producers
Half a sixpence
My Fair Lady
Evita
Wizard of Oz
Sound of Mucus
Cabaret
Mary Popps
Chitty Chitty
etc
Can't choose!

my fair lady, by far! and then Grease. Don't think that I really like any other film musical but do go and see them live as often as possible. Grease, stage version, with a bunch of girls dressed accordingly, is just an experience not to be missed.
