At 16:44 today I called our house insurers to renew the policy, the manthang had previously done his stuff yesterday and got it down to an reasonable amount, just under £400 for buildings & contents with their original quote being in excess of £600
We've never made a claim on any insurance policy we've held either singularly or as a couple over collectively approx 40yrs, nothing, no car claims, no house claims, nada.
It's always a battle with insurance, hate it with a passion.
At just before 16:50 pm today I phoned to renew, (my turn to pay you see) At 18:52 I managed to prise the now welded phone earpiece off my ear having just got through to
the 'customer loyalty department to tell them to take a long walk of a short plank. Time spent on phone, 122 minutes or 2hrs and 2 mins
5 staff, 3 departments and many many many minutes on hold later it's done.
To say I'm annoyed would be an understatement, ok so I managed to surf, cook tea and feed the troops, vacuum 3 rooms, put a wash on, change my youngest, run a bath for my eldest, send a few emails, perv a few SH cams and supply man with a beer whilst waiting but 2hrs on a phone to first wanting to pay a company that we already have several other policies with but 1hr in and thinking no feckin chance .....well the annoyance/irritation was only surpassed by eventual relief that at least they aint getting our money.
Cos voting with my feet and during my 'surf time' while waiting I grabbed an upcoming motor policy that was due for renewal with the same company, punched in the details online to a competitors site and got a comparable figure, actually it was slightly more expensive (whats a few £'s when you're on hold) spoke to the manthang just to make sure we were good and promptly took out the policy and paid for it all while on hold to the other idiots and whilst on the roll I did the same with our house insurance policy (just had to make a 5 min call to the new insurers (right after the other idiots) to confirm a few details
Net financial saving? None! Personal satisfaction? Priceless!!! for any other insurance company there is heartache and pain, for Toots and her personal resolve to rid our house of one particular insurer there's MasterCard
Result! & to Direct Line you can kiss my ass
I have had quotes from Direct Line several times for different cars across the years...
The most outrageous was not so long ago...
They were £800 more expensive than the AA !!
No wonder they aren't on comparison sites.....They're not wanted by them :lol2:
That is very very odd because I get my house insurance with them and it's under £300 for the year, I suppose it helps having a house alarm but I never considered it would be as steep as the quotes you got Toots, sure hope it's not when I renew and I hope I don't have the same problems with them when I come up for renewal!
Insurance is the only job I have ever walked out on for ethical reasons.
I was told to routinely decline legitimate claims, only those that complained would get approval at customer service level.
I was the technical assessor and I knew what was covered and what was excluded, customer services approved claims for those that pushed hard enough even though they were outside the T&Cs - while people who deserved and were entitled to cover were left helpless.
notquiteacougar :
We got an professionally fitted alarm, cctv, locked gates, no claims ever and so on, they're a joke and a law unto themselves. Good news is we get 21 days to cancel without any financial penalty which has given me an opportunity to start looking at other companies and for the first time in a long time my man is off to see a high st broker to see what they can do. So far I've beaten their quote by £27 (not enough for us to switch but it's a start)
Fraser : Nothing suprises me with these merchants, they're only too happy to take your money but in the event of a claim they have appear to have you jumping through hoops in the hope that some minute detail has been overlooked and they can refuse to payout.., legalised robbery I reckon.
Its a con game all round. We had a leak once in our bathroom it leaked through the kitchen ceiling and down the wall. There was virtually no damage simply a piece of wall paper hanging off near the leak site. An assessor came said the ceiling was sound and that we would get all new paper due to the slight paper damage. We could have left it but having never claimed before we decided to take the partial and semi free kitchen redecoration. The guy they allocated the work to arrived. Did a lot of tutting and said he couldn't possibly do the wall paper without damaging the ceiling due to the close proximity so would have to paint that too. He would square this with the assessor he said, and he did as well as a few other jobs he considered were needed. In brief they stripped the wallpaper and repapered. They then painted the paper with two coats and repainted the ceiling filling in a few cracks. I say they I mean the apprentice did lol The contractor guy checked on him once. In fairness he did a good job. On the policy there was a 50 pound excess which nearing the completion the contractor phoned me about at least 5 times to make sure it would be handed over before the job was finished. Once finished I had to sign the paper work for the job. On there it had the total figures  For that job he billed the insurance company just under 4k. I trained as a painter decorator the job was in no way more than a 400 quid job let alone 4k.
