Using the site chatroom or mirc????
if you click on the zonealarm screen and select program controls you need to find the relelvant programme that is blocked and change the boxes to ticks (although I don't have ZA pro just the freebie version)
OMG!!!! does that mean we should stay out of chat then? Perhaps we should warn all those innocent people of the forthcoming disaster!!!

Apparently the chat room has been very popular since it happened though mate :-)

Dunno if this'll help, but any programs in ZA with 4 ?'s can be deleted. They will just ask for permission again next time you use them.
Check the ZA firewall section (main tab) and see where your security sliders are. If the Internet zone is set at high try changing it to medium, then try the chat room.
If something in ZA is stopping you chances are it will have one or more red X's against it.
There might be some clues in the log viewer (alerts and logs tab).
Failing that... chack here:

Sarge,
I'll probably get lynched for this but here goes...
You need to identify which program you are using to access the Chat Room so try the following:
Open Zone AlarmOn the left Click on "Program ControlOn the Tabs at the top click on ProgramsGo down the list one by one looking for any that have a Red CrossDouble click on the Red Cross and change it to "? Ask"Log into SH and try and get into the chat roomA Zone Alarm alert should be displayed asking whether you want to allow this program to access the internetPut a Tick in the box to Remember the setting and click YesIf that doesn't do it, I'll be back at my desk after am tomorrow (Tuesday).
JQL ........ has anyone told you lately what an absolute diamond you are?
Bluddy brilliant I say! biggrin

Did all that and not a sausage!!!
All I know for sure is that if I turn my firewall off (Yes I know you're going to shout at me for that!!) I have no problem connecting. I have tried playing with every setting in Zone Alarm I can think of but to no avail!!!! confused :? :? :? :?
Sneaks past trying to pretend he didn't see this thread, one cause he hates firewalls (even though he understands them and thinks they needed), but more importantly he would get lynched by the rest of the anorak community for admitting he never got round to working out the settings for the firewall and IRC, so sorta bypassed it the one time he went on chat...
Ok I admit to be a lazy bugger... best of luck Sarge, if I ever sort my own firewall you be next on list bolt

Set your internet zone to medium....
then delete any program listed that you dont reconise except...
"Generic host process for win32 services" should be tick, tick, tick, cross (access trusted, internet, server trusted, internet)
IE "tick, tick, ?, ?)
MIRC "tick, tick, tick, tick"
messengers (MSN and etc) "tick, tick, tick, tick"
services and controler app "tick, tick, ?,?"
After thats done, then any access in or out should ask you... if it looks "odd" do a google or a microsoft MSDN to see if its a legit access or a rogue... things like "com surogagte" or "dll host" or "LSA" are usually being accessed by torgans, or outside forces looking for a back door.
You can always say no... and if it blocks your access then you know its wrong.
Always put the DNS, UBR, DCHP of your isp into the "safe zone" as some ISP's do pings and the like to your IP using them to see if they can grab back your IP address... if they get no response then you can loose some, or all, of your conection... this problem usually shows up between 1 to 24 hours of no problems at all.

Anyone know what Port the MiRC client for the Chat Room uses? I don't have it installed on this computer...
IRC uses ports 6667 and 7000, if I remember correctly.
If PiercedJon's instructions don't do the trick you can open a Port for your IRC.
No this doesn't mean donning a Sailor Suit and buggering off down to Portsmouth lol
In Zone Alarm PRO Click on Firewall (on the left)Click on Main at the TopIn the Internet Zone Security box click on the Custom buttonIn the Internet Zone tab click on Allow Incoming TCP Ports (I assume mIRC uses TCP... if not click on UDP)In the text box at the bottom enter 6660-6669Click on ApplyClick on OKLight blue touch paper and retire... That will open the ports usually used by Chat programs.
You'll have to watch LIttle Briton for the answer to that.... rotflmao
Thanks to all those that are trying to help me with this!!! I'm at the pulling my hair out stage now!   lol

What program are you using to access the Chat Room? Is it the built in Java or one you downloaded. Some mIRC programs also require Port 7000 open.
I just tried the chatroom (first time ever) from the link at the top. ZA asked me if I wanted IE to be an Internet server. I said yes and Robert's your mothers uncle - straight in. That's with no specific ports open, and internet zone set to high security.
So, bottom line is dunno
Sorry Sarge.

I'm using the built in Java.
I tried having port 7000 open but no change.

I'm using Mozilla Firefox, but when I try Explorer it is still the same. As soon as I switch off my Firewall I can get straight in!! confused :? :? :? :? :?
Sarge,
Close Internet Explorer. Remove *all* the programs from Zone Alarm Programs list. Open a new Internet Explorer window and try and access the chat room. Zone Alarm should display a dialog allowing you in.
If it doesn't, "you've buggered about wit sumat you shouldn't have"...

Done that!!
It displayed a dialog asking me if I would allow IE to act as a server. I ticked "Allow" then it just got me as far as I have been so far (When Zone Alarm is switched on).
Does that mean I have buggered about with sumat I shouldn't????? confused :? :? :?
Sarge,
I'll give the PRO version of Zone Alarm a thorough inspection in the morning and see if there are any "gotchas" to trip up unwary tank drivers...
