I've recently noticed a pattern to the posts here.
It seems that it is obligatory that once a week it is necessary for someone to post a whinge about the mods or the site in general. What follows then is a series of posts from other members that agree/disagree with the comments. The posts get more and more angry until the thread is locked. This is sometimes followed by the original poster posting again to question why the original thread was locked.
Are there any other rules and conventions that have been noticed?
I hadn't noticed any locking lately Keeno but I've kind of had my eyes shut a bit to be honest, there has been some behaviour that has shocked me to the core and I'm questioning my hanging around in any event but as you have asked a sensible question, isn't there normally a reason put on just before locking? or has this stopped. Sorry can't comment much more than that (that makes a change! ) on this one
Yes I have noticed that Sg Bilko leaves a trail of wet finger marks on the walls of the forum everytime he does his shower race thingy.
DD :giggle:
Good thread Keeno
I have noticed people starting off threads that are general observation/discussion threads (quite right too) and then comments are made (by usually the well known members) who jump down the neck at the original poster and go off at a tangent, with frankly uneccessary, irrelevant and often snide comments.
I could give many references to this, but I'm not into naming and shaming. They surely know who they are.
I also get annoyed by members who say that the same subject comes up time and time again. Well of course it does, this is a forum and as Davej says new people are the lifeblood of forums. As new people read and join in posting (if the poor people are brave enough) they all want answers to the questions we all asked when we started out. Now I can answer some of those questions I posted 6 months ago and would like to give the benefit of my knowledge as so many of you fantastic people did for me on several of my early fact finding posts.
Personally, as with all communities cyber or otherwise it will only get better if US the community make it so. Vote with your posting feet. Ignore the crap posts, keep bad feeling out, and concentrate on the lively, informative and frankly pleasant people that we need to keep this forum thriving.
If people no longer like this site and continue to whinge about the good old days gone bad/the site management changes etc then either admit it's time to move on or put effort into making this Forum a more positive and pleasant one for everyone.
It's up to everyone who wants to make it work.

We do believe that far too often the mods/ops are critised for doing what they believe is the right thing. They and we are all only human and so mistakes are inevitable.
Having said that we do not always agree with things done by the mods/ops but we have always accepted that such things are not done out of malice.
The point has been made about topics re-occuring all the time that have been discussed previously and perhaps instead of locking threads a merging of new and old would be a better solution. This would allow the topic to be looked at with fresh eyes and avoid the hurt that is almost always caused when a newbie (or even an old hand) resurrects a subject only to find it is locked with a reference to an old thread being left as his/her reason for such locking.
- after all if a topic is repeatedly resurrected then doesnt that show that there is still some interest in it.
- indeed if it is resurrected often enough then perhaps it should be included as a sticky or even be made into a sticky of its own.
I also feel that if a person posts a question/discussion they are soliciting the opinions of the current forum users, as these are the people they have a relationship with (albeit virtual), not the forum users from a few years/months ago.
I definitely think a thread is in the here and now with whoever wants to particpate.
After all you wouldn't go into a pub with your mates, start a conversation, and then be asked to join another group of people who were having a similar conversation, and be told they were doing it better and had a head start on you. Right?
