No disrespect Darkfire but couldn't the same be said for the Café? Perhaps Storm would like to see threads about politics/culture/sports etc a little more defined and less open to hi-jacking by in-jokes and mutual views held by an established group?

Personally speaking, and very personally too - I'm not one that ever reads the 'chit chat' posts. If I haven't got into a thread within the first one or two pages, then I rarely get into it - purely because I can't be arsed to wade through all the 'chit chat' that invariably starts up after page one, most of it bores the pants off me.
Oh and I'm not talking about the odd responsive comment directed at someone - I'm talking more the constant responsive comments, the two/three or so person 'chat' that lasts for what seems like dozens and dozens of posts when yer trying to scroll past it confused
Even worse is when halfway through one of these threads, someone comes along, does a well thought out, cracking post, obviously with a lot of effort and feeling, which happens to land right in the middle of two or three persons 'chit chat'. It gets totally overlooked, ignored and lost, the chit chat goes on around it. Bordering on bluddy rude I reckon.
Now don't get me wrong, this ain't directed at certain people, hell, I can't even say some people, cos we've ALL done 'chit chat' at some point, you can't help it :lol2: It's just that when it comes into a thread that people are staying on topic with, I think it's only manners that it should be left that way, at least until it's reached it's topical lifespan dunno But that is easier said than done when you're just dying to do a chit chat response to someone :lol2:
Quote by Dollyminx
Perhaps as a suggestion there could be a fourth section to the forum called 'The Podium' designated to contemporary issues and the 'chit-chat' would remain in the

My feelings are that I would like it to stay as the Cafe, all in together. If someones got something to say to one person, then shove it in a PM :dunno: If someone want's to do 'chit chat' then go open a chatroom :dunno: Once I get my 'split topic' button back, then I'll be on a mission to split off all the 'chit chat'
You do get cracking threads, I think SH is extremely lucky with the community it's got, the people that post in the forums, some of the planets best characters are here  - it's a lively little corner of the site, which can also, at times, get pretty heated, pretty opinionated, pretty damn surreal, often there's something for everyone to post on.
If there was another forum, then I personally (and it is only my personal thoughts here) I would like a 'flirty' one or something like that, a forum that you can post a reply in, but not start threads up - then when the split topic button returns - Chit chat can be hived off and put it in a separate forum where the chat can carry on, banter til their hearts content - and not at the expense of a thread that perhaps some people were really enjoying the topic of biggrin If it gets more lively than 'chit chat', if more and more people add to it, it becomes topical as opposed to conversational, then haul it back out and into the Cafe again lol
This is only my personal view, don't think it's shared by many - but thought I would share it anyway :lol2:
At the end of the day, I'm still here nearly 3 years on ....... and loving it  :bounce:

i think this is a recurring theme....... and maybe the reason why the forum isnt as widely used as it could be, or should be.
one of the problems as i see it is newbies are scared and even virtual newbies are nervous.... and that cant be healthy....worst of all it seems that all but a chosen few have to pussy foot around, trying to be diplomatic .......when their opinion is as valid as the next persons...
theres even a thread above which states that its a shame that newer people havent expressed their views.... im not bloody surprised they havent.......
i just htink that some of those who give people a hard time should chill out a bit........ its not clever and its certainly not grown up........
if i had a quid for everyone whose left the forums because they dont like that sort of thing... id be in the carribean sunning myself right now.....
we're meant to be lovers not fighters on here............

Dolly clicks send with footnote : OBJECTIVE OBSERVATION
That's not an objective observation; it's biased because you are a relative newbie who sees herself as not part of the 'established group' yet.

I'm sorry Frecklebird, the comment was based on an observation of joining the forum, isn't that valid of a newbie? I enjoy the forum, the fact I usually scroll much of the threads for more interesting contributions does not mean I feel 'left out' nor have I ever said chit-chat has no place, I was actually suggesting that perhaps some of the balance could be redressed with regard to Storm's original post.
And on being part of a 'gang' or the 'established group' ... is that really the only aim here? I'm sorry but I left school quite some time ago! rolleyes

Your comment is no less valid, as that of a newbie - I said that it's biased because you are a newbie. Biased does not mean invalid in any way at all.
And the 'established group' comment was taken from something you said. Yes there may be members here who are more established but we were all new once too, and we got subjected to the same kind of pisstakes that newbies do (and indeed we still do!). Thing is, we stuck around so it can't be all bad. It's not a gang, it's a group of people who have come to know one another. And come to like how the forum works. What's disappointing is when a relatively new member comes in and tells us it's time for a new look or that it should be done a certain way.
I don't know what the school comment was inferring; maybe you're saying we are all childish?

You said the 'V' word!
Not childish at all Frecklebird, if I thought so I wouldn't continue to post.
I used the term 'established group' in the descriptive sense and didn't feel it was derogatory, I felt you chose perhaps to read that as a personal complaint by me as seeing myself outside it as a newbie and thus having a dig at the established community ... being 'popular' is more a school yard pastime that I'm not the least bit interested in and felt defensive I would appear as such.
I hope that clears that up.
I think anyone new can soon become a familiar and much liked personality on a forum - Dolly is a good example of that.I think many of you are priceless,be you funny or informative, daft or supportive.I recognise that some of the longer standing members have given much to the community but newer names also add to it.
I like the format, split it more and people will drift off into their specialist niche and not mix as much as we do in the present formats.

In my cack handed manner I thought perhaps having a separate 'debates' section might encourage people to post more who feel shy joining in with the 'fun' banter... which for less outgoing personalities might appear daunting. Having read your post I would have to agree with you, the mix is probably more conducive to a thriving community!

I think you should go and read the whole 'V' thread as penance! lol
I have to say, I think we all mean well and that this thread had good intentions but I think Dolly hit the nail on the head for me when she said (in PM, hope she doesn't mind me saying it here) that she understands my protectiveness. I think that it's just down to the fact that it's only really settled back down lately after the upheaval (think Cali mentioned that too) and we'd like a bit of normality for a while?

I honestly don't want anything adding nor taking away from the forums.
Splitting it into sections will mean I just read the sections I can be arsed with. I never go in the dogging section as it is, but those who do I'm sure have a wonderful time in there. If they only ever post in there, even though Ive been here too long lol I might not know them. I think more rooms and features makes it more clicky than it already is and that the reason I dont want it changed one tiny little bit.
Comparred to other forums... well thats kind of irrelevant because I can only think of a handful that are set up to facilitate talking to people that youre potentially going to meet face to face sometime. Other fourms are designed so you never have to see the people youre talking to ever. I dont think change for change sake is a good thing. Myabe new personalised skins for the forums, but anything more than that I dont think is needed. Can we just have some setled not changing anything anytime soon time befoer we have to have the builders and decorators back in please? confused

I’m not sure how much “normality” we are in for after Admin have just made their announcement, but I’ll keep :gagged: about that I think.

I think we should accept and keep the status quo and maybe just have a little bit more leniency shown by the Mods on certain threads and posts.
More than likely get my Gonads booted for that comment. However I did say "a LITTLE". wink

Leniency is a good idea but I would like to see a little more consistency in enforcing the AUP.
