Anyone else getting frozen screens? Been happening to me now for a while but only here, rest of the web is working fine. Its not a catastrophic freeze but I cant click anything in the window all links etc do not respond. To fix it I have to hit refresh page. Can be a pain in the ass I had to rescue a long post just now as it froze with it on the screen before submitted.

Tweeky, I've been getting odd freezes in Firefox for a few days, along the lines can open Firefox, can open tabs, can browse away, can open chat, then all of sudden links don't open, can't close tabs, post mode times out with odd errors, can't close Firefox, need to Ctrl-Alt-Del to quit.
That what you're on about? confused
Happens in Firefox and Chrome. I'd not associated the problem with SH specifically so far, but now you mention it SH does seem to be the common denominator having thought about it . . . . .

I get freezes but only in the window. I have not yet had to close down Firefox. I find I can hit refresh and then the window will work again. This is a pain in the ass when I write a long post then hit submit and the page gets frozen. I cant hit any links I cant copy my text to try and save it so my only option is to hit refresh then quickly hit stop. If I can do this before the page is refreshed I can then submit the post again. If not then I have to hope I am lucky and the text is there still when I hit the back button. Have not lost a post yet but its still a bit of a pain in the :moon:
This is only happening to me on SH, nowhere else. Guess it must be site related.

I was having problems with page loading etc until I disabled the IM chat facility. Once I'd turned IM off, all worked hunky dory after that. smile Might be a few teething troubles? dunno

Where do you turn it off?

Part of it has been caused by the teckkie guys testing out the new IM feature, when they are loading / unloading it etc.

Been also getting the freezing screen a lot. Went to setting ....privacy...messenger.....drop down box. But when you put "off" in the top box, ie "global", it turns off all the features below. Don't see a seperate button just for IM. Am I doing something wrong?

Well I'm glad I'm not the only one with problems.
I have had a situation since rejoining this site (not a problem in 2007) with the side panels closing over the centre box. SH help suggested that I changed my browser, so I did, from BT Yahoo to Internet Explorer which cleared that problem but now I have the "freezes" from time to time that others are complaining about.
Plim

We are taking another look at the messanger settings today, any freezing is likely because of having multiple tabs open as your browser only can have so many connections to pass information across. We have a few things to try this afternoon that might help somewhat.
On Saturday 268,000 messages were sent on the site messanger lol and we have not had any load or server issues so whatever it is is client side.
You can help resolve these problems by letting us know how many tabs that you have open, along with the operating system that you are using and browser.
Thanks

2 tabs
Windows XP
Firefox browser...
Since turning the IM off I can have 5 or 6 tabs open and experience no problems at all....

Yeah each browser can only have a set number of connections before it will stop working, we have a few ideas in the office about what we can do as work arounds. thanks for the info wink

Max, in Firefox 3.5.8 I can usually get up to 12 - 15 open tabs before links stop working / can't close tabs / need to ctrl-alt-del out, though I've just managed to break it twice at only 7 open tabs each time. Chrome froze at 9 tabs. Safari 4.0.4 went to over 24 tabs with no problems.
Running XP Pro SP2 on this machine, and have max TCP connections tweaked to 50 concurrent for torrents. Home XP machine is probably default 10 connections, but don't think it breaks any earlier, with fewer tabs open? Makes no odds as far as I can see if I open one tab at a time and wait for it to load fully before clicking the next link, or just click a dozen links at random and have them all try to load in background. Using Firefox's Linky extension to open every single link on the Cafe Forum page simultaneously definitely breaks it, but that was probably a stupid bloody thing to do anyways, and I'll not try that again! rolleyes  lol

The maximum number of connections is also set by your browser. It would be helpful if you could increase this number just to test if this is the root cause of the problem. For Firefox, type about:config in the address bar and search for the option -connections-per-server to increase it.

No worries L33. Currently set to 16 connections. 48 do you, or higher? Probably won't have a result for you till tomorrow morning though . . .

Max, L33, tested Firefox with more connections as suggested. Increased -connections and -connections-per-server to first 48, and then 128. Trying to open 10 tabs in background broke the site with both settings. Site doesn't like the 128 connections setting at all so dropped back down to 48 connections, and have so far managed to break it at 8 tabs opening in background, and 6 tabs, so increasing the number of connections doesn't seem to have improved anything?

We have just made a load of changes to split certain parts of the site away so more connections can be open. This went live about lunch time, can you let us know if things are a bit better now.
thanks

Just had over 40 tabs open in both Firefox and Chrome, so tried to get it to break using Firefox Linky to open 30 forum threads simultaneously. Everything still working normally afterwards. Just dropped max connections back to 16 and opened 30 links again, all fine. biggrin

Neil, looks like I may have got the setting slightly wrong, I think you probably needed to change -persistent-connections-per-server which is by default 6 I believe, probably explaining why you had problems at 7 or more tabs. In any case, it looks like the changes we've made to the site have fixed the issues. I would recommend restoring the -connections-per-server setting back to default by right clicking on it and selecting reset.
