Just a quick post to add another program onto the extending list. Maybe there should be a recommended program list put up so people don't have to read through all four pages for a link to a relevent program? Just an idea. Mind you this isn't a technical web site so I wouldn't hold anything against you modders for not doing such a list.
This is another spyware program that I have found very useful in my registry crawling travels. Called spybot, is completely free and has lots of little extras like being able to control what programs are loaded on startup etc...

This program also looks for trojans and can help eliminate virus as virus scaners do not remove the registry values during the cleanup process.
Hope this helps.

Posted this in a thought it might be useful here as well
I have done a 15 page report on viruses for a course and thought i would post this for the less techie members.
Prevention at home
There are many ways to help prevent viruses gaining access to you home computer.
1. Anti-Virus software is freely available for home computers
2. Don’t open any mail that you do not recognise or attachments
3. Regular scanning with the virus software is recommended once a week
4. Do not use anything other than original software
5. Make regular back-ups of your vital files such as system data and personal data.
6. Update your virus scanner every week too over 500 new viruses are discovered every month.
7. Scan attachments and other documents with the virus scanner before opening
Prevention at work
Work places can also follow the above steps but they can also do a little bit extra to ensure virus free working.
1. Use more professional versions of anti-virus software.
2. Do not leave computers on if it is on and sitting there it can be used without authorization.
3. Pay attention to changes in the way the system operates in order to detect virus infections quickly i.e. if the system is running slow, erratic, rebooting.
4. Store original programs safely, such as by write-protecting disks and making a backup copy of them on such items as Zip drives.
5. To help prevent damage from viruses that result from unauthorized accesses and misuse limit the number of system users and their rights to certain sites and programs in the system.
6. Stop system users from writing to the directories where shared programs are stored.
7. Delete programs that are not necessary for system operation to help prevent extra ways for the virus to operate and infiltrate.
I recently had problems with virus protection and now have Norton anti virus, adaware and spybot to help resolve this and appear to be virus free. However I still seem to have a problem with internet explorer.
It keeps closing the page I am on for no reason, also it wont let me have two windows open at once. it closes the other. Any suggestions?
Lots of good advice here. Thank You.
If I can add my techy tuppence...
As money is an issue for some people and free software firewalls are all you can afford for now then don't bother with Zone Alarm Free. The full program is one of the best at about £35 a year, but the freebie has weaknesses. The best freebie I have found is Kerio and it can be downloaded here:

What I like about it is that you get all the protection of the full product for the first month and if you're reeeally cheap (oh I hope so lol ) you can copy it before you install it and reinstall it once a month wink If you keep forgetting, or finances improve its only about £35 to upgrade to the full product. cool
It is also quite an education to see what it picks up when you install software
As a general principle, try and stay away from Microsoft software as it is the main target for hackers and virus software. I particularly hate Microsoft Outlook as it is the cause of most virus spoofing misery and has 'security issues'.
If you are in the London area and want some no bullshit advice, particularly on hardware, then feel free to contact me. I work in the voluntary sector and am famous for charging too little. (Soft hearted, nesh? Southerner)
hi just thought i'd let you know of another free virus protection software program. Its called AntiVir, not sure if someone else has recommended it as i didn't read all 4 pages of comments to find out.
AntiVir is a good simple virus protection program even scans emails and updates itself.
And when u scan ur hard drive the window title says luke filewalker! You must download just for that! lol.
to find it go to google an dput in AntiVir and it shud be the top website.
Yesterday my PC went to a log-off frenzy, disconecting every 5-10 mins or, strangly, everytime i went any where near (perhaps it has goods taste, hence it don't like )
i ran spybot, and Avast antivirus, both found nothing.
i used to use AVG but got rid of it during a system clean out and replaced it with Avast.
Today i re installed AVG and it found ! trojan (sadly unused lol ) and SIX other viruses.
Two points.
my PC always has zonealarm and Avast running, so how did the viruses get in there?
secondly, AVG will only repair 3 of the 6 viruses.
are they likely to be 'true' viruses or as a mate suggesed, programs which AVG thinks are viruses?
excellent thread btw
Well for starters,
What viruses did it come up with? What was your computer logging off, internet, network complete shutdown?
Did you have the virus before you were installing and uninstalling all of your programs. You can get anti-antiviruses. Do you use Kazaa? or any other Peer to Peer networking?
There are lots of things that need to be discovered before just shooting in the dark whether or not you have a bad program or not.
Yes your friend is right in that if you have more than one antivirus program on your machine sometimes they believe oneanother is a virus because of the way they hold the virus database. Some programs look for specific coding which other programs may think is a virus.
I personnally have begun to have doubts about spybot. It is a good program but it has lots of very bad floors in it. As for freebee antivirus software then you get what you pay for.
Most well known antivirus vendors offer an online scanning service, so you could go there and get a second opinion.
and are a couple of good ones.
Mainly I-worm and something called Trojan dropper and various deriritives.
PC was logging off internet and sometimes freezing, constantly havingto be shut down via either cont alt delete or cont f4, shut down didnt work. then disc had to be rescanned at bootup.
the really weird one was this morning ( and even i find this hard to believe) it would not disconnect from the net (apparantly) i even went as far as to unplug the 'phone line from the wall, which obviously broke any internet connection, physically. however the screen still thought it was connected at 44,000bps. at that point i changed my virus protection.
i dont really want to re install windows or I.E. but.......
its Windows 98 btw.
btw
point taken re freeware.
yes i use kazaa-lite.
This maybe a pointless post but the firewall/antivirus you use is only as good as you make it most trojans and viruses have the power to disable your av/firewall that means no cover so scan the program before you execute it "open it" ,and dont forget there a loads of new trojans and viruses that are stealth poping up everyday so check for updates on a daily basis if you need any help on anit virus / firewalls please contact me

I'm not that familar with the Kazaa networking but I do know that it is supported by adware programs that can mess up your internet connection at times. It is a price you have to pay if you don't upgrade your kazaa to the full version.
These adware sites often contain more than just ads and internet tracking. A lot of them have little trojans wich are often malicious in nature.
Another thing about peer to peer (kazaa) is that it is very easy for wannabe hackers to get onto your computer or just to utilise your internet connection speeds. This is unlikely to be a major threat because dialup connection speeds are not worth the effort to utilise. If you have a file somebody wants then they don't want you disconecting until they have it.
To solve some of your problems you may have to do some serious tweaking with your firewall. Even getting a better one may help as kazaa can be quite tricky to stop all of the security threats that come with it.
As for spy programs. Just go with anything you like. Chances are you will find atleast three things that you can't get rid of. Anti virus programs very rarely clean your registry of these programs so they can be no use here.
Anti virus programs obviously need to be upto date whenever a new update is available. I tend to go with a firewall and a antivirus program of the same make as they tend to complement each other.
To be honest I am really losing interest in trying to solve the kazaa problems. If you use the program then you should know what you are getting into. Simple research will give you lots of tips and warnings. I have to say, read up on all of the viruses that you have found and only then will you begin to understand how they got there, how to stop them and get rid of them.
Good luck.
thanks guys. so in essence the point is, avoid the internet and the pc will be ok
I seem to have aquired a trojan called and no matter how I try I cant get rid of it.....
I use AVG for anti virus, that says it cant move it to the virus vault and if I try to delete it at source it says it is protected....
Any ideas guys???
Oh and instead of kaaza try far better and alot more secure....

Either boot in DOS mode and remove them manually or if you're not to familiar with DOS I found a link to the purity scan uninstaller

I run WindowsXP and know from experience that the access to DOS is limited so you cant actually do anything.... But I will confess that I dont think I would attempt it that way as my DOS experience isn't that vast....
I have used the uninstaller and am about to do another virus scan...... fingers crossed....
Thanks sussexguy kiss

Have you tried starting the computer in safe mode and deleting it?
Otherwise I think you're gonna have to boot in DOS mode to get rid of it or download the trial version of TDS-3 from I'm not sure how limited the trial version is though confused

If it doesn't work I can walk you through removing the files and registry entries for this particular nasty.
Are you turning off system restore before running a virus scan and attempting any repairs ?
If not - right click 'My Computer' and, in the System Restore tag, check the 'Turn of System Restore' box and then reboot, before you virus check and repair.
hiya i run ezfirewall/antivirus formally zonealarm and have netgear wireless router.
so can you help me with the following:
1. y is it everytime i run ad-aware there are up to 70 trackers and how do i stop them.
2. been to grc and had perfect result until i did the dcombobulator test which said
DCOM is Available AND Vulnerable!
Several well known DCOM exploits
ARE effective on this system.
This system has apparently NOT been patched against ANY of the well known DCOM exploits. If this system was patched, the patches were not effective in removing the vulnerability from the DCOM facility (this problem has been seen previously and confirmed). You should attempt to apply Microsoft's latest DCOM patch if possible, then verify its effectiveness with this utility. But, either way, this utility should finally be used to completely disable this system's DCOM capability.
i have tried to get hold of the patch from microsoft but it doesn't seem to exist.
cheers kaz
ps simple terms please....woman and machine dont mix to well here lol
Easiest thing would be to go to and get the latest updates. But if you just want the patch I believe it is this one

Turn off Cookies (which can be a bit of a pain) and that'll stop about 95% of them.
Use Spybot, as well as Ad-aware.
Thanks sussexguy it worked just fine. didn't want to download the whole security update from microsoft as it downloads SP2 and for some reason once this has done the router on netgear wont allow connection to adsl line, even with firewall disabled. microsoft gave step by step instructions (working in DOS) to resolve this but ended up with the hard drive crashing and having to perform system restore from DOS.
anyway thankyou once again

You implying that Microsoft produce dodgy software? Surely not....
They better keep producing dodgy software or I could loose one part of my business!!
Kaz... download Protowall from if you're really worried about stuff such as spyware.... along with Blocklist Manager from the same place.
However, you'll need talking thru installing and setting up protowall...
The combination of Protowall, BlockListManager, Spybot Search & Destroy, and AdAware SE Pro tends to be effective enough to keep more or less everything at bay. Couple it with Norton AV and McAffee Corporate AV and you should be locked up tight and secure...
Gizza shout if you've any probs getting it setup... just grab me on MSN... (if u know who I am...!)
Also, if you're still having probs with router and SP2 then I should be able to fix but would need to see it in the flesh so to speak... again, collar me on MSN if you want that sorting.
Once Protowall is running properly and succesfully, you should no longer have any probs using any of the P2P filesharing networks...
