Friends! confused What is your definition of friends? blink Reason well i was having a discussion with someone and i mentioned that i didn’t have any friends but had a lot of acquaintance, but they could understand my definition of friends and the difference between acquaintance and friend.
So my definition of a friend is some one with who i can go place or go around and see them with out an invite etc. I think that I’m a social leper poke
If you are then I am too. I have very few people I would feel comfortable dropping into without arranging first.
I have never kept up with anyone from school, uni, 3 other jobs apart from one person. I had 'friends' there but a combination of not wanting to impose and being the sort of person that walks away without looking back, means that I am fairly comfortable losing contact.
I have people (many from here) that I call friends but would still make arrangements to meet rather than drop in. So maybe I should redefine the concept of friend as being someone I would want to visit at all. I certainly would not want to visit with many people I work with even though we get on really well there.
I'm waffling now - but I think I said what I meant to say biggrin

An acquaintance is someone who I'd talk to about mundane kind of stuff; a friend would be privy to more about personal stuff. How much, would depend on how friendly I was with them.
I wouldn't just drop in on someone uninvited though, regardless of how much of a friend I considered them.
Can i add my 'two cents worth'..lol
I think 'friends' are people who i would 'invite over for dinner'
and 'acquaintances' are people i 'wouldn't'...
Just my opinion though rolleyes
Edit: Hope that doesn't sound rude redface

All our really close personal friends are people we have known for 20yrs plus :smile2: .
We're even god-parents for two of them :thrilled: .
Ours & there houses are open season so to speak we dont need an invite nor they to ours ,we go round one friends & have to make our own coffee as shes normaly pottering about in her garden.
I would not drop in on anyone without them knowing I was coming - unless of course it was an emergency.
Plim sad

Stop looking for new friends by putting same thing in 2 threads  you are lucky to have you as a friend lol
A good question: Define a friend?
i do know many people i call friends, but a real friend i can honsetly count on one hand.i have made many a friend from this site and also cyber world as well.
i do have some contact with a few people i knew at school ,as for work there are people there i do call work mates and do sometimes got out for a drink with them, i do have regular contact with cyber friends as well and chat with them on regular basic on line.
but to have someone drop round out of the blue is ok,but not too often is better.
I was once told if you have one good friend in life, consider yourself lucky. I have 3 friends of 25+ years who are more like family than anything else.
We do drop in unanounced on each other because its something we have always agreed on. We are close friends, our doors are always open to each other, unless they are locked, in which case someone is either having nooky or out. lol
Aquaintances are work mates, people who use the same social circles etc but not someone Id confide in.

Pretty much what I would say but with the addition that friends are the people I trust the ones I can turn to when needed.
A friend is someone who puts their feet on your sofa. wink

Perhaps I should explain myself before sales at MFI go through the roof!
Just before we went away for chrimbo, a stark realisation hit me. We'd invited my lover away with us on a family Christmas holiday, and I was taken aback by the sudden thought of how difficult it could be for him potentially.
Bear in mind that:
A: He's not a swinger, and doesn't have a swingers mentality- he's found it tough to get his head around the situation.
B: He barely knew Mr W- or our kids, at all.
C: He's never had kids of his own- and was gonna be in close proximity to someone else's for 10 days.
D: He would have usually spent christmas with his mum, but she'd dies a few weeks earlier.
Anyway- I went into a bit of a flap- really conscious of how important it was to make sure he felt welcome in our home for the couple of days he was here before we left.
Day 1. Put his bag in spare room. 2 hours later, pass by to see clothes all over the floor.
Day 2. We had to go to see youngest's nativity. He stayed back at the house to chill. Came back to find him sprawled on sofa, fast asleep.
By the end of day two, I was having to step over him as he was sprawled on the floor colouring in with the kids.
By the middle of day three, I was commenting that we needed to buy a coffee table so he could put his feet under it
And the barsteward commandeered the remote control within 24 hours! And that's MY territory! mad
My friends- I would walk over hot coals for. However, after being let down by many, many people- I chose them carefully.
Very few people get inside my inner sanctum.
A friend is always there for you should you need them and you are always there for them if they need you. They usually know what you are thinking just by your expression Oh and they buy you silly fridge magnets when they go on holiday!....well erm...mine do anyway redface
