It's hard to understand why so many people have become so venomous about her - she knows a lot, and she knows it quckly, but unlike many people in the media she comes across as genuine, modest, and quite charming.
I wonder what she has to do to give herself a "cool" image with the public. Leave obscene messages on someone's answering machine?
(Mine if she likes :P )
I dont mind clever birds as long as they shut up during the important bits
Is this the girl who was captain of the team that won University Challenge? or am I barking up entirely the wrong tree?
If it is, who hates her? sounds like a case of the media making something out of nothing. Again.
I like 'stuff'
people who know 'stuff' can be inetersting people when they share thier 'stuff'
no matter what that 'stuff' may be.
It appears this young woman knows her 'stuff', whoever she is.
Do you think she might be being villified for entering a team quiz, nothing more more than that, and simply knowing her 'stuff'?
lets level the playing field a little, and hate them all eh?
but moreso that Paxman chap... his 'stuff' is on bits of card and he reads from them... a 'paper-stuff' merchant!
lp
The problem with such brainy types is that they always know a lot about stuff you don't.
Now if they stuck her inside a football museum for a month and she came out knowing all about the great game, there might be something in it for her and the adoring public.
I don't hate anybody, waste of energy and all that
I dont like University Challenge much simply because:
Accumulation of facts doesn't impress me very much.
It reminds me of the money/class/privilege divisions and the opportunities denied to many.
Im sure all sorts of people are motivated to hate for all sorts of reasons. I admit to being envious, I think I would have enjoyed a few years at Cambridge or Oxford. I dont know if Im clever enough to have got there even if, like this lady, I had been to a proper school that charges £1300 just to put your name down and £10000 a year for the next seven years. I would have liked that opportunity though.
I'm sure this lady is gifted and the opportunities she has had have been lovely and good luck to her.
What I don't like is the fact that further education opportunities are by necessity rationed. The kids hothoused in a private school environment get a bigger share at the expense of equally able or more able kids from the state system. I think that is wrong.
I love University Challenge and Gail Trimble was superb! She's going to be a cracking mad professor one of these years!
