a friend of mine redface surprisedops: has lost a bit of cash(nothing daft) on the footie/tennis/rugby/anything betting recently and gave me this poser..........
should i pack it in and put it down to experience or should i try and recoup some of the damage??
i advised him to lump on barcelona last night!!
anyone got any better advice?
I would say cut your losses and kiss goodbye to the cash. The trouble with gambling is when all goes your way, all's well but as soon as you start losing you'll be tempted to do another then another etc etc just to get your money back. It doesn't work ! I play online poker and although I'm not a bad player, if I played for real money rather than play money I'd be living in a cardboard box by now ! ( or squatting in Sheddy's shed :giggle: )
You never see a poor bookmaker - and casino owners make obscene amounts of money. Doesn't this tell you something?
Sure, you can have a good run from time to time - but in the long run the house always wins. They wouldn't be in the business otherwise.
If I was advising your friend I would say "Quit and find something else to spend your money on." Try and look on the positive side - think of all the enjoyment and excitement he has had - but realise that, in the long term, he is always going to lose and he might as well quit now.

If they dont win they cheat. 2 groups of peple now have figured out how to beat the system on several gambling games, roulette was one I forget what the other was. These people ( one group was uni students ) are then banned from casinos and thier pictures emailed world wide to most majour casinos so they are denied entry. So even if your find out how to win you cant win they will ban you eventualy then change the rules so your system no longer works. Have been quite a few tv documentarys on about these people.

Just as long as you don't lose £20000 a year!
Have you tried matched betting?
Here's a foolproof betting system for you...
1) Put £1 on anything at odds of 2:1. If you win, quit, you are £1 up.
2) You are £1 down. Put on anything at odds 2:1. If you win, quit, you are £1 up.
3) You are down. Put on anything at odds 2:1. If you win, quit, you are £1 up.
4) You are down. Put on anything at odds 2:1. If you win, quit, you are up.
5) You are down. Put on anything at odds 2:1. If you win, quit, you are £1. up
6) You are down, Put on anything at odds 2:1. If you win, quit, you are £1 up
...and so on. Each time you bet enough to end up £1 in profit. Of course, you do need an infinite amount of money to sta5ke...

the general rule of thumb is don't bet more that you can afford to lose.. for example i am an online poker nut....i put a set amount aside for little tournaments each month and if i run out of money then so be it.... (I only play one or two dollar tournaments anyway)
but whatever you do, don't go chasing after recouping losses.. because you'll end up betting more and more and digging a bigger and bigger hole for yourself.....

u must be feelin a little  !!!!!!!
M8....seriously... i love a punt.... but im careful what i bet on...... these computer based (im supposing its internet based) are a real no-no for me..unless someone gave me a computer to help me choose which bets to actually place...
.
I reckon you look at the possibility of trying to win the money back....sensibly..... but for that youre gonna have to do some mathematics.....
its feasible....
shit or bust time.....
ps. unfortunately if he loses... he does his balls in....

Just found this and as its an ungodly hour i'll unload my stress in here confused As some know i'm a big gambler but not when it comes to bookies i've never been in one in my life. My vice is poker may it be on the net in a mates front room or playing in a tournament at a casino, its alll the same to me. Now i'm not naieve enough to beleave I can make a living from it however suffice to say I don't run at a loss (at the moment). But to be honest with good self disipline it can be cheap entertainment. When I play with my mates we all normally chuck in 10 or 20 pounds each and winner takes all stick the price of some booze and a takeaway on top of that and by the time we've all payed our share it still adds up to a cheap night in with some good conversation as opossed to me p*ssing 150 quid or more on a Saturday night, yes I know its a bit steep but my taxi bill for a night out alone runs into the £40 mark. :? :? :?
he/we/I picked up an excellent amount that night/morning, MARACAIBO are now my adopted south american team.
depends what you are gambling on!
poker - well known that "bullying" is a well known (and accepted) part of the game - not everybody's cup of tea and understanding your opponents is key - hence why some good players make reasonable money on the small money internet sites as many that play at that level have no idea!
football - forget it! Odds are often quite small and surprises are few and far between ............. and you tend to miss most of them!
horses (dogs too!) - again you need to study form etc. and a bit like work it can get very heavy on the study time! I've subscribed to a number of services over the years and look at them as both fun/pleasure and an investment - now on with two that have shown great profits over the last 18-24 months - one made over 1,000 points last year and at £10 a point that was ovef £10,000!! That said if you had subscribed at the worst time last year, you could have been down over £1,500!!
problem with gambling is that you are always looking for the big one! profits tend to come in dribs and drabs .................... be in it for the fun as well as as the money!
stocks and shares are also gambles ........................ but watching/reading financial pages to see how they have moved pales in comparison with a few good days at the races!!
here endeth the lesson!
