When cannon balls struck the deck of a ship they would shoot through and become imbedded in the hull of the ship or whatever they hit, they would not explode. When a cannon ball hit something on a ship it sent out a mass of large sharp splinters that struck and killed poeple, this meant that cannon balls didnt have to land on you to kill you. This is supposed to be the highest or most likely cause of death during a seabattle.....the drowning part would occur after the ship has began sinking, a sinking shop would usually be the end of a battle, therefore drowning wasnt a cause of death during battle but after.
