As one who has just recently experienced the joys of using 'poppers' can anybody tell me what their shelf life is? Once the bottle is opened for example, is that it?
May be a stupid question to some, but no questions are stupid if you don't know the answer. wink
I have no knowledge of pharmaceutical chemistry so dont sue my ass if im wrong, however I did work as a QC chemist testing glues and polymer resins so know a bit about organic chemistry.
Poppers will break down into oxides of nitrogen and aldehydes, the speed at which is does this is mostly dependant on temperature and surface area exposed to air. Keep it cool and the lid on when possible and you should get at least two weeks before the aldehydes make it very stinky and headache inducing.
TL;DR ~2 weeks wink
Well I don't use them but used to work in a chrome plating factory where the substance was used to clean grease off metal before chrome plating could take place.
We had to replace the vat of "poppers" lol when the smell became faint, I guess it is the same with a small bottle of the stuff, if the effect and smell is diminishing it's time to get another bottle smile
On a lighter note, it was my first job after leaving school and the other employees took great delight in making the "dipping" the first job newbies were given, but without a mask, first few minutes a little nervous in your new job, 5 minutes later feeling very comfortable, very soon after that, singing and dancing whilst swinging (no the other type of swinging) pieces of metal around your head before dipping them in the tank, the rest of the day spent relaxing in the canteen totally unfit for anything else but very happy lol
never used the stuff, and it was banned a short while ago and substituted by something different...don't know what the current status is, best to ask at your local sex shop. I know someone who uses poppers from time to time and I know that one of those little bottles have lasted him quite a number of weeks before he would declare a need to replace the stuff.
They are things that go bang and release paper streamers over party revellers?!
poppers
(amyl nitrite, butyl nitrate, isobutyl nitrite, TNT, liquid gold, rush etc.)
Amyl/butyl nitrite (poppers) is a powerful drug that can give you an
almighty burst of dizzy energy for a couple of minutes.
The rush kicks in immediately, and for a few moments you'll feel like the bass drum has got inside your head, the lights have been turned up to a zillion watts and your heart is attempting a solo flight.
Generally coming in small glass bottles - or, more rarely, glass phials - costing between £2-£5, amyl nitrite is normally snorted out of the open bottle, although some people like to get adventurous by inhaling a cigarette that has been dipped into the liquid (do not light the cigarette! Amyl nitrite is is a highly volatile flammable liquid!)
First produced in 1857 as a treatment for angina, amyl nitrite evaporates at room temperature. The vapour released causes your veins and arteries to dilate resulting in the blood flowing faster through the heart and the brain.
On the dancefloor it feels like you've been hit by a percussive thunderbolt, and if you're having sex it feels like your sexual organs have grown to Herculean proportions. The effect only lasts for a few moments and you might feel a little light headed for a minute or so afterwards.
Some people react differently to amyl and suffer pounding headaches, dizziness and a flushed face, or feel like they're starring in 'Scanners'.
Side effects: Amyl can deliver the mother, father and immediate family of headaches.
Never take amyl at work or at any place where there is a chance of physical danger - for the few moments that it kicks in you may well not be in control of your actions. If you're having a bit of a session and finding that it's becoming less effective, take a break from it.
If you're snorting poppers while having sex, there's a chance that the heady, sex-beast rush may make you lead you to risky sex - so slap on a condom before you break out the amyl.
Try not to take it with other stimulants (coke, speed, E etc.) as it could put too much strain on your heart.
The liquid is also highly inflammable so be careful with your spliff!
Health risks: Anybody who suffers from circulatory problems or from low blood pressure
should be particularly wary of this substance. Using poppers can be a serious health risk for those with heart trouble, breathing problems, or anaemia and glaucoma. Always wash off any amyl that spills on your skin and never drink the stuff - it is highly poisonous.
Yeah it breaks down faster in light, as I recall, hence the opaque bottles. Nasty shit i wouldnt touch it with barge pole.
I tried sniffing it, as a school kid, from a bottle bought from an ad in a sex mag. Got a 30 second 'Like WTF is going on here' type buzz followed by the feeling that something was clawing on the inside of my head, with an ice pic, not nice!
Poppers have also been used widely within the gay community for years as a preparation to receiving a cock up the ass. The idea is that the popper is sniffed immediately before someone hoofs it up your butt and that the 'high' is so intense and immediate that it overwhelms any feeling of discomfort, and also relaxes your bum muscles, from the immediate penetration. This I may add is information told to me by friends who are a 40+ something gay couple who partied hard in their youth.
Also they are widely known to kill erections. Read up on them a little while ago after seeing them for sale at Bath swingers. Had some in the mid 90's gave me a kind of euphoric feeling that lasted about 20 mins.
Amateurman - many thanks for your concise reply. Much appreciated and understood.
Tweeky - may have to agree with you there on your 'widely known' point
Oh well....back to the drawing board..... wink
