Anyone who is Lancashire born and bred will especially know of this guy. I always as a child marvelled at his professionalism on the Banjolele, and even today people who can strum the thing like Billy Connolly and others remind me of the days when george Formby was on the tv in classic films, along with Norman Wisdom and Charlie Drake. Part of my Family History is based in Lancashire, and even though I am from across the border in White Rose country, I still feel the closeness is there despite the past rivalries. What sparked off this post is I bought a CD yesterday of some of his classic hits, and it brought back some happy memories of my childhood, when the tv was simple stuff, tame and pleasent, and a joy. Anyone else have star memories as a child and want to share??? I STILL laugh at Laurel and Hardy and Harold Lloyd..like me OLD but CLASSICS, and time and modern living still finds an audience with the modern kid, who see the comedy never dies......As george would say...' Eeey, it's turned out nice again...'
Radio shows were what brightened up my childhood. I remember listening to 'Jimmy Clitheroe' before sunday dinner. Isn't it funny how smells are the stronger memory: Jimmy Clitheroe is always accompanied by the aroma of roast beef. I loved 'Round the Horn', which was years ahead of it's time. Certain people seemed ubiquitous but have now disappeared. Do you recall Millicent Martin, Charlie Drake, Dickie Henderson, Dick Emery, Val Doonican (bought a CD of his last week-what does that mean?), Jack Hargreaves on 'Out of Town' and 'How', 'Bleep and Booster' on Blue Peter, Radio Caroline, (bit later) Radio Luxembourg...whoa, better stop before I disappear up my own reminiscence.
May I mention Harry Worth? Ha ha ha ha I don't know why but there it is.
He (see left) was one of my special favourites from that era.
Mike.
Again on the Radio... My name is Angus Prune and this is my tune... I said I'm sorry I'll read that again

Val Doonican - rocking chair and jumper

Just for the record - 36 is NOT old!!!

The names mentioned thus far also revoke happy memories from years ago when as rocky says, t.v. was a simpler more innocent media. I still enjoy watching old films with the likes of Terry Thomas, Leslie Philips and James Robertson Jutice. The black and white minstrels although not a particular favourite, are also synonymous with my childhood alongside Jim Reeves and The Batchelors, all watched whilst sticking a wet finger into a bag of crystalised sherbert in various colours and flavours and sucking sherbert lemons until the roof of my mouth was cut to shreads.
From earlier times the Magic Roundabout and repeats of Robinson Crusoe which were dubbed, the music from the programme is still a favourite.
Stig Of The Dump and Moonfleet were obligatory reading.
Other memories are being force feed a tablespoon of cod liver oil daily which made me retch everytime and having my hair rinsed in vinigar water because mother said it made my hair shine, never mind the fact that I smelt like a chip shop.
Teenage years where Brut and High Karate, were a must before any party and where bring a bottle meant either a giant bottle of Woodpecker Cider or a Watneys part seven alongside a 5 pack of Park Drive.
In a shop yesterday I found the entire first series of "Love thy Neighbour" on DVD!
I would hate to think of the cringe factor in watching it now! confused
Now - Alf Garnett - that was a whole new ball of ear wax! rolleyes
Fred
"Dooon Pedro, the great bullfighting hero, the Lancashire toreadoooor...."
Heard that song on the French radio a while back. I loved what I managed to understand ! biggrin
As for my own childhood memories, they relate less to radio songs than to Japanese TV shows which began to get popular in France in the early 80s. The oldest TV programmes I can remember are "Spectroman", "X-OR" and "San Ku Kai". I don't think you Brits have been exposed to these, hm, products rolleyes
Similarly, you have been spared the onslaught of Japanese animation that swept France during my childhood and early teens. Captain Tsubasa (an intriguing but addictive series about teenage football players), Saint Seya, and of course Dragon Ball ("kamehamehaaaa !" :sparring: ) Not to mention the French or Franco-Japanese series such as Ulysses 31 and Inspector Gadget...
Addition to the "Symptoms of (soon) being over 25" post: "No one under 21 has ever heard about your favourite childhood TV programmes" :violin:

lol

My olds fed me Malt extract... much worse than cod liver oil to which I became used.

-Cod Liver Oil has been mentioned a couple of times: I still quaff my daily dose, but discovered years ago that pouring it into a quantity of milk makes it quite palatable, trust me. I can't take it neat but have no trouble with a bit of milk.
Now, I thought I'd still got my Big Chief 'I-spy' book of secret codes, that would have been fun. I found my Rupert Annual, Beano Annual, Tea Card albums, Roy Of The Rovers Annual, secretly bought copies of 'Skinhead' stories, bits of Meccano, spare brushes for my Scalextric and the bullets from my 'Johnny Seven' gun-but not my code book. Any ex-I-Spyers out there?
Help!!!!
Does anyone still have Panini sticker number 156 (Full back for Ipswich) from 1978 - It's the only one I never got. I have 3 gold Club emblems for swappsie - Forest, Southampton and Watford....
Remember them???????????????????

so I will try anything once. smile and there is no side affects. Repeating of capusals and a horrible taste.... :(
I remember the moomins...I thought they were great....now I wonder why, but I would still prefer them to the teletubbies.

Arti a johny seven, I am so envious, with its multi function rocket and grenade launchers it was the gun to make other boys envious with. It was even more enviable, if you could go on patrol with it whilst wearing a pair of the pathfinder boots that had animal prints on the soles and a small compass in the heal. Most usefull if you needed to identify a Tiger print in your local bridleway.
I seem to remember being a member of the Tufty club which had a squirrel as its emblem, although cant remember how one got to be in the club in the first place.
Glad Mr FC also smelt of Brut and I hope that the smell was part of an overal look that included such things as two tone suits, close cropped hair, loafers, highly polished DM boots, Crombie coats with a silk handkerchief in the breast pocket, Arrington jackets that could be worn inside out with the tartan lining showing, Stay press trousers in a very very pale blue with razor sharp creases, Rupert trousers in shocking pink or blue checks, Budgie Jackets with their felt collers and pocket patches, Steel combs with a handle that would be sharpened by rubbing on the curbstones, Red, clip on braces, jeans that only come down to the top of your boots the list goes on.
Also rushed home on a Tuesday lunchtime, to catch the new top twenty and see who was number one, so that we could get down to Rumbelows and buy the record for the princely sum of 25p and then rush home to play it on our Decca suit case mono player, (load up 8 records on the arm and watch then get scratched to bits) or later in life on our Fidelity stereo player, 5 watts per channel, but we thought it was great.
The undying loves at school, that caused rows and tears as well as heartbreaks. Parties where we tried our luck with the girls, God! snogging never lasts that long these days......I WANNA BE 15 AGAIN!!!! CAROL XXX COME BACK TOO ME!!! I promise that I wont say Donny Osmond is crap again and if you go out with your friends I wont keep ringing you up and being nasty, I wont say horrible things too you when I am with my mates so that I look big. Ahh happy days.

Was the programme called 'Hadleigh', about a squire up north somewhere? I only remember it because he reminded me of the sort of man that used to pay me 2s 3d for slogging my guts out all day on his estate-and there were quite a lot of them about then. I remember 2s 3d because it was just enough to buy an Airfix model, which I had a passion for.
I've been racking my brains all day about a programme I remember-just-way back when I was small, something like 'Land of the Giants'. We didn't have a television so I used to walk to my Nan's. They had a tiny bush set, more wood than screen. My old Grandad used to sit gazing at it, cow mucked wellies still on, puffing his pipe and ranting about the Tories-didn't matter what it was, he ranted about the Tories. I miss him. My special treat was to watch 'Mystery and Imagination' on a Saturday night. Would probably look pathetic today, but I used to walk home with my back against the hedges , chanting prayers and making 'signs of the cross' all over the place. ..probably explains a lot really.
