It is not just the very recent comments being banded about – these type of comments have a habit of appearing periodically:
Type A Comment:
I like reading the forums and getting a feel for people.
Type B Comment:
I don’t like to post in those sorts of threads in case my opinions upset people or are not accepted.
Type C Comment:
Several people sent PM’s about the subject but didn’t post.
A – (B+C) = dunno
Who are you really getting to know when you read a member’s forum posts…. the person or their online representative?
Their online representative, unless their real persona is the same.
I'd guess it can only be the online personality... no matter how honest the poster may feel they are representing themselves.
Forums, thier instant-reply nature, and the written word itsslef does leave an incredible amount of interpretation in the hands/minds of the reader.
I'd like to think Im being myself online... though how that appears... well... who am I to say?
Making a choice as to what we may wish to respond to in open forums gives us a *get out clause* sometimes, where we may not have to show our thoughts and opinions on certain subjects... making us less contencious should we wish...
I may not express views on many things... being a bit of an idealist... Im almost afraid to follow my own line of thought sometimes... let alone give it to someone else, unknown to me to chew over!
plus I doubt Im clever enough to argue my own corner on an issue of importance...
so, though I may be being true to myself... Im also not here to make mine, or anyone elses life difficult...
easy life for me please...it's all a bit of fun innit?

Does it matter? dunno
Why can't we just all enjoy ourselves instead of having our posts psycho analysed!
People post, people either agree with the poster or disagree. Either situ shouldn't be then analysed and thrown around the forum. Not everyone will always agree on what a poster has put but it shouldn't then become WW3!
Well there are two answers
One
The posts represent the person
Two
The posts dont represent the person but the person behind the PC
How do you know which is which confused:
Experiance
Gut feeling
Physical meets (meet, social or munch ect.)
And depending on the above perception can change or remain the same.
You can only base what you know on the facts before you at that time.
Not only can you hide behind the screen and choose what to partake in, your very words can be turned around or read differently from one person to the next.
I find it easier to write in a forum by picturing all of those who have contributed already and basically imagining I'm talking to them in the same room. Granted, if the discussion is of a steamy sexual nature then the bodies I picture will be less or appropriately clothed.

I may be yes, may be not - it's a question.... may be a question which will make some people think, make some people comment and make some other people do neither (and wander off to post in something else - or not).
Initially, it has to be the on-line personality, whether that be real or just one which people want us to see. However, once a person has been posting for a while, their real-life personality soon starts to come through (intentinally or otherwise) and in a lot of cases it is easy to see the type of person you are talking to/reading about.
People who want to come accross as something they aren't can only keep up the 'disguise/pretence' for a certain amount of time, and in my opinion, if you do take the time to chat properly to someone, it is suprising just how much of the real life person does come across wink

May be if it is a whole new persona - but what about when it is part of the real person with other bits not revealed?
By selecting to only post in certain types of threads and keeping some thoughts to yourself (or in PM) - would that be so difficult to keep up?

Correct, it is a question, but for the past few days the forum has been upside down with personalities and postings being attacked.
So OK, in answer to your question, with me you get to see the real me, I don't hide behind anyone and I certainly don't have any 'representative'. I don't hide in the background waiting for a 'meaty' thread and I don't cohearse others to 'gang up' alongside me if I see a 'weaker' personality, I say what I think so what you get is what you see. smile

I miss all the fun
i would like to think i am the same online as off but i dont know if thats possible or not, but i am as near as i can be.
yes i think initially its the online personality, but after meeting quite a lot of forumites, chat room people etc the persona and person havent been much different apart from one or two who are maybe a lot more shy than they come across.

Can someone point me in the direction of the relevant threads so I can catch up - I haven't been following as I thought it had been dull as dish water lately confused
I say what I want as and when I want to.
Sometimes I have things to say but choose not to for a variety of reasons. Sometimes I will just come and say it.
You see the "real me" on here - but only a part of me. No one in my whole life would ever see the whole of me and I would say that is the same for most people. Not out of secrecy of trying to be something we are not, but simple human nature.
This (site/forum etc) is only a very small portion of my life. I have no desire to reveal every small detail about myself on here. Or anywhere for that matter.
There are one or two online personalities I could quite cheerfully strangle. Whether they are nice, balanced human beings IRL, I will never find out as I choose to avoid them at all costs.
The atmosphere on the site at present is only apparent to certain individuals not the Forum as whole. This Forum - like many others before it - always goes through phases. How you feel about it depends on whether you choose to ride the waves, try to push back the tide or simply swim to shore.
well I'm happy...
but then that would be a part of my own online self...
if I were a tad annoyed, or bored, or down with either myself, or the site, the community...whatever...I would not be bovvad to be here posting...
