Why does this beautiful city of my birth decline into a mire of sick sectarian hatred every time these two teams play football.
Not content with fighting on the park, the riots that ran through the city were nothing short of sickening.
I myself was pulled into a melee as I went into my local shop to purchase a loaf of bread.
Two local lads came into to buy cigarettes, when three yobs kicked in the glass doors, shouting abuse at the two boys. Two bottles of Buckfast wine were then smashed over the head of one of them.
It wasn't until the 16yr old daughter of the shop owner was struck and given a mouthful of racial abuse that I decided enough was enough.
Now I am a practicing Buddhist and abhor violence of any type but this got my back up and this wise old Llama became the young polished warrior he once was in days gone by. Unfortunately CCTV cameras picked me up doing my best Steven Segal act as I threw the offending yobs out of the store.
This wouldn't normally phase me, as I have been brought up with violence around me but I was very shaken through into Sunday evening.
So Glasgow city fathers, please clean up this city and stop this hatred and bile that goes on here every time two teams play football.
Now I just feel like a sad OLD man who could have gotten himself killed.
Who said I was a lover not a fighter.
I don't blame you for reacting this way, someone had to protect the innocent shop girl. Why is this sort of thing still around and why is it connected to football? Same as the racism that mars football matches, why??? No other sport has such a yob mentality where idiots and troublemakers just want to kill each other just because they support a different team.
I just can't understand any of it, it's a GAME for gods sake not a war.
iv attended football matches for over 30 yrs,iv seen this so many times, mainly at away games, but on derby day in sheffield,a certain section go mad,and all hell breaks loose, tho secterianism is np down here, but it would seem that racism, once banished, has reared its head once more,or...the media would like it too, society has so many divisions these days,be it religion, colour, creed,,we have people in our country from so many different countries now,but when the sun sets, are we not all human biengs,
Its a struggle to find any logical at football matches is not ANYWHERE NEAR as rife as it was in the lates 60`s,70`s and early 80`s, though just lately there has been a rise in high profile incidents.....not helped by the behaviour of too many over paid morons on the screen.
The confusing aspect of the `Auld Firm` trouble is that we are now 15 or 20 years on from the Mo Johnston signing.
How can Scotland fans spend many, (usually miserable  weeks following their country ALL over the world, welcomed with open arms by ALL, famed for their humour and good behaviour worldwide,THEN return home to resume sectarian hostilities at the `Auld Firm` , hostilities such as Union Jack waving and national anthem singing on the one hand and sinister over reference to Irish roots on the other?
Its not the politics that confuse me SO much, its the thinking behind the hostilities that I cant get to grips with. Or is it that Scotland fans agree to put their differences aside when it comes to national football? In which case that is one heck of a pedestal to place football on...or is it a case of incorrect prioritising? Or am I crediting the yobs Glasgowllama refered to at the start with way too much intelligence? Bear with me , Im not Scottish....just genuinely concerned.
When Sunderland play Newcastle at St James Park the Central Motorway is closed off to allow the convoy of supporters buses free passage - the behaviour from them is bad that the police won't allow cars to be behind of them, in front of them or beside them. I looked out my window one afternoon to see about 100 double deckers going past and all the blokes were mooning out the windows!
I have no doubt that the Toon supporters have behaved as badly too.
So don't think that it's just and Old Firm problem.
:P
Yeah but the thing with all that old firm crap here is quite bad when people actually say that they hate fucking catholics etc and vice versa.
At some point or another football and sectarianism have merged and are now one in the same in a way here!
WE have the orange walk and all the mad rangers fans with their unionist flags out taking over the plantet all in the name of fuck knows what , for all I can say it just incites more hatefulness.
I am a so called fenian bastard in the place where I live. I have heard people shouting "fenian bastard" to others as where I am is a predominantly protestant area with celtic park just up the road!! ANd this comes from adults!!!??
No wonder it gets carried down to yet another generation I think they really should do more to stop it!!
The difference with the Tartan Army and the thugs at the old firm games is such.
The supporters of GLASGOW Celtic FC remain true to their roots and follow the Republic of Ireland and not Scotland therefore no differences need be put aside.
The interesting thing coming out of this particular game and I suppose others in the past is
The players themselves shamed the game with violence and play acting but later that evening they were seen at a charity night raising funds for the Anthony Nolan Fund.
I mean for 90 minutes they hate each other but after they have left the stadia they are the best of mates.
Its the scum that follow them Yes Fruity1976 I can sympathise with you as you do live in what is commonly known as a Proddy strongehold dating back to Billy Fullarton and the Billy Boys. but this was a scheme gang not a bunch of mindless football thugs.
My kids were attending a 21st party in Merchant City when approx 50 wearing ski masks brandishing swords ran amok through the area and across into the Gallowgate
I haven't seen scenes like this since the 70's.
It may be the No Mean City tag is back with a vengeance.
It is saddening
And yes I'm not proud of the action I took against the yobs in the shop I abhor violence of any sort to the point I was visibly shaken and ill the following day as the realisation that I could have been killed myself.
I have studied martial arts for 30 odd years but nothing prepares you for an all out attack like this.
Rant over.
Going to lie down TLC and a nice massage wouldn't go wrong here,
Suppose a cup of coffee and a browse round the rest of the postings will have to suffice.
