In this era of multi media information streams I make no particular effort to keep abreast of films/books/theatre/music. I also avoid newspapers and magazines on principle. I assume that things worth a look will pop up on my radar eventually.
This leads to an occasional nice surprise and I had one last night. I picked up a few dvds at a boot fair recently for those "57 channels and theres nothing on" evenings when I fancy a chill in front of the telly. I bunged Good Will Hunting on the DVD. I wasnt expecting much, Robin Williams hasnt been the same since Take That and frankly I had no idea who Ben Affleck or Matt Damon were.
Anyway I thought it was a fabulous film. What do you think? Any other cracking films that I have missed out on?
I was half expecting the title to the topic to be a pun on the movie's title, used for a swinging ad..
but yeah..it's a good movie..and robin williams..you just gotta love the man.
I can take or leave Robin Williams in his comic roles, but he has done the odd bit of good acting. Millenium Man was a great, and very thought provoking film.
I'm not sure I've seen Good Will Hunting, but I might just have to seek it out now.
I recently read Cold Mountain and it is a really good read.
The Prestige is a really really good film!!
Star Trek
it's over a couple of weeks old now, but you may be able to dig it out somewhere
lp
The Long Kiss Goodnight with Gina Davies, one of my favourites
Good Will Hunting won Damon and Affleck an Oscar - from memory it may have been for adapted screenplay. Good film.
Others? The Departed - Scorcese's only Oscar and an absolute belter. Or The 25th Hour - Spike Lee's homage to NYC... but much much more than that. I loved Slumdog Millionaire. Ooooh, how about Robert Altman's Short Cuts? A corker - and the Raymond Carver collection of stories it is adapted from is great too.
I could go on. redface

Off topic there - but I got totally mixed up the other day, and was talking about President Obama Bin Laden rolleyes
I blame the parents, Barratts is a shoe shop, not a first name, just cos you can get blokes called Clarke don't mean that names like Schol or Office (or Barratts) make groovy names confused
Anyway, back on topic. The Beach - A film that was slammed and slated in the press for months, both during filming and afterwards, load of crap blah blah blah. Nearly didn't go and see it, but we were in a 'lets go to the pictures' mood and there was nowt else on.
I absolutely loved it, one of the few films I've seen more than once (excluding things like Grease, Sound of Music and Wizard of Oz singalong stuff).
I got right into it, could be cos it was something I wasn't expecting, had me rivited it did, just loved it.
Try Robin Williams in 'What Dreams May Come'- a flawed but fascinating film.
I agree Ben, I enjoyed that film a great deal.
Other films I have enjoyed :
Dogma
Scent of a Woman
I'd also recommend The Green Mile, but not when you are in a sad mood, otherwise you will be bawling. Forget that it has Tom Hanks in, it's a brilliant parable on the life of Christ. The only film that ever "got" me.
Blade Runner - raises so many questions that are still prevalent today, if not more so.
The New Batman is excellent too. I'm becoming quite a fan of Christian Bale, even if he is an arrogant tosser at times.
I can't say I've seen any recently that have made my jaw drop. Actually I lie, I saw RatRace and that was so bad I wanted to gouge my eyes out with popcorn. But any of the above (bar Ratrace) and you can't go far wrong.

Great film Res, but if one of those questions it raises happens to be 'Is Deckard a replicant' I will have to kill you! Well, maybe not kill you as such . . . maybe more like go off on a long rant about so-called film theorists who bang on and on about it being, like, sooooo postmodern, and then quite spectacularly miss the whole point of it as a postmodern film by putting forward some gubbins about him being a bloody android! banghead lol ;)
*wanders off muttering something about whether these people have even heard of Baudrillard*
Neil x x x ;)
Also a pretty much unheard of, but fantastic British made film "Dead Man's Shoes" starring Paddy Consadine it is fantastic and a great twist!
Yeah I loved good will hunting too....
if you want to stick with Robi(n) Williams try Patch Adams ...its a wonderfully funny and sad film too based on a real life story.
Have you seen The Shawshank Redemption? A fabulously uplifting film for all those with a sense of natural justice.
never heard of Baudrillard

HI Guys
I was fairly disappointed with The Departed. The film it is based on, Infernal Affairs is a Hong Kong classic and is infinitely better. I think Marty got the gong for the many glaring omissions he has suffered at the hands of Oscar. I love Taxi Driver, Raging Bull, Casino and Goodfellas though.
With regards to Robin Williams, I watched August Rush last week. Although it was really over-sentimental, I thought it was lovely - gives you that warm feeling of wellbeing inside.
Boogie Nights and Magonolia are both classics. People who like Short Cuts should appreciate these!
Have fun

The prequel to Heat is called LA Takedown, and it was just as good but in a slightly different way.

I still think that is one of the best films I have seen, it was a complete flop I believe at the cinema, but was a huge success on Video.
I've said it before and I'll say it again:
Killa Klownz from Outer Space

The Diving Bell & The Butterfly - truly awe-inspiring!
The Motorcycle Diaries ( which I do believe is being shown on Sky this month ) Inspired by the accounts of Che Guevara when he was still a medical student as he and his best friend embarked on a road trip around South America on a beaten up old bike. Excellent stuff
Oooh sassy i read the book before i saw the film and epected the film to be a huge disappointment. But it want it was brilliantly made and beautiful to watch.
