I've spent half the day attempting to do a water pump change on a 99 Xantia Turbo Diesel (facelift with aircon). Got the covers and engine mounting off and marked up the belts and run paths then attempted to get down and dirty with removing everything necessary.
After about an hour and a half i gave up trying to remove the aircon/alternator belt. I've had a chat with a citroen mechanic a few weeks ago and he mentioned using a socket on a square peg to remove tension from the tensioning roller, but i just can't work out how the hell to do this or see any way to remove the belt. dunno
Have been on google for assistance but can't find any info so any mechanics out there who've done this and can PM me a good detailed description i'd be a very happy bunny biggrin
Alternatively, anyone who knows of a decent online mechanics forum or site which can help, that would also be rather excellent.
Pleeeeeeeese help, i'm banghead
Ltnc, you biggrin
Here is one link for a forum that deals with various things Citroen related.
Don't know if that is any help......
If its like my old cavalier put the socket on the tensioner and turn clockwise. It will need some effort to turn as ist a very strong spring. Then hold it while removing the belt.
When the belts off gently and i mean gently turn socket back till it stops.
I said gently or risk bruised knuckles lol
thats the problem, can't see anything to attach a socket to dunno did wonder if the spring at the back of the fuel/power steering pump was tensioning it, but i was a bit nervous in giving it a try cos of the mass of pipework you get on citroens :scared:
Tut! You should have a Saxo like me instead of a xantia rolleyes
Oh and a pink fluffy steering wheel cover makes the car go better :smug:
Ok I know I'm not much help confused

You don't use a socketr there is a square hole that is the same size as the part of the ratchet that you put a socket on.
Put the square bit of the ratchet in the square hole and turn smile

Nope I can't see that at all.....wink
i did have a look for something like that, there is a smallish square hole (about 6mm) offset from the centre and the centre pivot looks like a Torx screw, but bigger than any Torx i've seen before. will have a look at the pics i took and post anything that might help
Thank you Dlep passionkiss

you take pics of the belt path so you don't get to the putting them back on stage and think
'errr, how do they fit? dunno'
Granted, it would be much better to take pics of your rather delicious better half, but as she's not too useful as a mechanic i'll have to stick to engine pics till next time we meet
Sheddy, here's the tensioner (right side), the square hole is much smaller than a half inch socket drive.
any suggestions?

Well, I'll have to remember to keep my mouth shut in future....bolt
However, that url I posted is of a forum that you can ask specific questions about maintenance (as far as I can tell), so hopefully you may find the answer there.....
Wacker it with a hammer??

Am I helpful like LadyFee??

Thats probably cause its 3/8 drive biggrin
Looking at it it should take a short 3/8 drive extension linked to a ratchet..
I go on a great car forum but they do Vauxalls (I think) not Citroen.
I can ket you have the link if you think it would help.
Alternatively if you hook the oodjit to the thingamebob and counter reverse the twisticle whilst pushing on the groomwit it should work fine :P

I love it when a woman talks techie...:inlove:

well looking at the picture, the offset hole is possibly a way of locking the pully while you undo the centre bolt. Because citroen are complete b*******ds there is probably a "service dealer only tool" for that but with imagination, you can shove somthing in there ( like 3/8 bar) that will do . The centre " hex bolt" is hard to make out but if you say it is well then it is. give it a good clean and make sure, it may be a stardrive or tork , but in any case its going to be the most obscure odd sized fastener going because citroen are utter.......!!!!!! double check if the thread is left or right handed ! ( usually so that the rotation tightens rather than unscrews its self ) You don't really need to take off the pullywheel ( or do you?) so if its only slackening the belt you want then the tentioner needs to be released as per other posts above..Keep looking!, the tensioner should be there somewhere ! and that offset square hole on the pully is not it !
Does help dunno
Me a techie - not a mechie ;-)
Probably not but here is a Hint ! look for something like a roller pressing directly against the drive belt ????
wtf is going on, meaty is posting a thread about cars?

It may not have an adjuster as such.....It may be whats known as a stretchy belt.
