Hello ! I am attempting to quantify this for a teeny weeny piece of work at work (revelations)
It is trickier than I thought. Gut Instinct- What is it.. how do you use it? How do you know what it is? how would you describe it to someone else who had never heard of it?
any contributions will be read and plagiarised.
Gut instinct
When walking in to a situation you instantly associate it with another striation. Then without recalling the previous situation you do what worked last time, what you think worked last time.
Some of us are good at it, or just lucky.
Some of us have had long training to reduce thinking and just go with the ingrained lesson.
The problem is that if the situation is not as the subconscious understands it, it all goes wrong.
Gut instinct is a short cut, sometimes it works sometimes not. A short cut for what? Gather facts, understand them, work out solution, act.
Gut instinct, means "I know what I did last time."
It is a hard one to explain.
I think is a feeling deep within, how it got there I don’t know. But is the ability to way up a situation, the feeling in the gut to be in tune with the mind and body.
My gut reaction has told me a lot in life and very rarely lets me down.
I knew I was going to marry my hubby as soon as I saw him, I knew I was having twins and told everyone at 8 weeks of pregnancy. Some would say it was a premonition, It was just an overwhelming feeling of knowing.
I feel some have a strong gut reaction and others don’t, I think it is about feeling and knowing what the signs are.
I think we all have it some use it better than others.
It is a natural immediate instinct.
I know what I mean but just so hard to put into words.
An emotional response based on a subconscious assessment of the task in hand.
I'd say peanut was fairly right on this one, but for a definition perhaps something like " the conscious manifestation of all the subconcious signals such as body language, etc that our mind recognises as being either good or bad - usually about another person" -- hope that helps.
It's intuitive rather than emotional I think - and intuitive as opposed to logical (captain).
intution...is another word for same thing I think. I think we actually under estimate the power of the mind . Maybe it is a inbuilt defence mechanism that we have as humans.
I don't think 'gut instinct' as such exists. I do believe that humans have developed very good abilities to analyse situations and especially people very quickly. Based on experience and recognising subtle signal like body language and voice inflections.
We've needed to, cos the most dangerous animal our cave-man ancestors (for that read paleolithic and onwards) faced, was his fellow man - especially strangers.
Some people are better at that than normal social communication, which is sometimes a case of faking interest/warmth/confidence, and is a more consciously developed skill.
Whatever it is - I would never ignore it. I may over-rule it, but not ignore it totally.
It can save your life! That time when you're walking home, its dark, you see three guys walking towards you, hoods up, something tells you to cross the road...
I think its part stereotyping, part experience, ultimately something you feel rather than something you can explain....
