Hello ! I am attempting to quantify this for a teeny weeny piece of work at work (revelations)
It is trickier than I thought. Gut Instinct- What is it.. how do you use it? How do you know what it is? how would you describe it to someone else who had never heard of it?
any contributions will be read and plagiarised.
Gut instinct
When walking in to a situation you instantly associate it with another striation. Then without recalling the previous situation you do what worked last time, what you think worked last time.
Some of us are good at it, or just lucky.
Some of us have had long training to reduce thinking and just go with the ingrained lesson.
The problem is that if the situation is not as the subconscious understands it, it all goes wrong.
Gut instinct is a short cut, sometimes it works sometimes not. A short cut for what? Gather facts, understand them, work out solution, act.
Gut instinct, means "I know what I did last time."
OOO I thought it was easy to explain until i started to type!!!
I would say gut instinct is a feeling that occurs and no matter how much you try to change or analyis it it remains the same.
Eg : We started chatting to a couple via msn possibly to take things further but i had a gut feeling about the male of the couple.I tried to put it to the back of my mind but couldnt, whenever i spoke to him, there was always a little niggle.
To cut a long story short a few weeks later my gut instinct proved to be right and it turned out he was a complete t**t!!! evil
Hope it helps you xx
It is a hard one to explain.
I think is a feeling deep within, how it got there I don’t know. But is the ability to way up a situation, the feeling in the gut to be in tune with the mind and body.
My gut reaction has told me a lot in life and very rarely lets me down.
I knew I was going to marry my hubby as soon as I saw him, I knew I was having twins and told everyone at 8 weeks of pregnancy. Some would say it was a premonition, It was just an overwhelming feeling of knowing.
I feel some have a strong gut reaction and others don’t, I think it is about feeling and knowing what the signs are.
I think we all have it some use it better than others.
It is a natural immediate instinct.
I know what I mean but just so hard to put into words.
An emotional response based on a subconscious assessment of the task in hand.

What smart arse said.
My gut instinct about people I meet for the first time works 99% of the time. I've met people that have instantly put me on my guard but for no reason other than 'there's something about them'. Later I find out why and that gut instict has been right. Only a couple of times I've been wrong about people, trusting them too much and they've turned out to be not as shiny as they want others to think rolleyes
I'd say peanut was fairly right on this one, but for a definition perhaps something like " the conscious manifestation of all the subconcious signals such as body language, etc that our mind recognises as being either good or bad - usually about another person" -- hope that helps.

I was gunna say that :silly:

It's intuitive rather than emotional I think - and intuitive as opposed to logical (captain).
Maybe it would be better if it was called animal instinct, behavioral programming at a molecular level, the natural tools to survive and even survival of the fittest to a certain degree.
Now, stop doing so much work and mail me some smut smackbottom

rolleyes done.
intution...is another word for same thing I think. I think we actually under estimate the power of the mind . Maybe it is a inbuilt defence mechanism that we have as humans.

If I get a gut instinct I go to the toilet and drop it like its hot....................... rolleyes

i thrust mine. it's to do with survival instinct i think. there are always going to be people who appear nice to start with that are going to get my sences on high alert.
for instance a guy i have met recently who works for a friend of ours. he's been nothing but nice to everyone and yet i can't bare to be with him on my own. i just don't feel comfortable in his company. i'll trust that. he makes me nervous.

There must be something in the water today rotflmao
Gut instinct, good and bad! I reckon its built on a set of past experiences both positive and negative... therefore it sometimes makes you as closed and predjudice as open to new things. The problem is how aware you are of your own behaviour, learning from experience is definately good, but to use your instict right i reckon you need to be aware of how rare or common your bad experiences were... that way you can remain more open minded with new things as well as trust the instict on of you gut.... why is it called that?? I usually only refer to my gut when i have eaten something dodgy and body is kicking off!! wink
I don't think 'gut instinct' as such exists. I do believe that humans have developed very good abilities to analyse situations and especially people very quickly. Based on experience and recognising subtle signal like body language and voice inflections.
We've needed to, cos the most dangerous animal our cave-man ancestors (for that read paleolithic and onwards) faced, was his fellow man - especially strangers.
Some people are better at that than normal social communication, which is sometimes a case of faking interest/warmth/confidence, and is a more consciously developed skill.
Whatever it is - I would never ignore it. I may over-rule it, but not ignore it totally.
It can save your life! That time when you're walking home, its dark, you see three guys walking towards you, hoods up, something tells you to cross the road...
I think its part stereotyping, part experience, ultimately something you feel rather than something you can explain....
We are here to breed
to do this we need to feed.
Both of the above can be and sometimes are brainless activities lol
The brain is here to keep us alive to do the above.
It performs thousands of calculations a day to ensure our survival most of them subconciously and mostly based on past our experiences of the world at large....when the subconcious phones the concious bit up and says ....ey up eccky thump better watch this scenario sonny ...thats gut instinct.
