Haggling...

I was watching breakfast news this morning and they were discussing haggling...I always thought in this country the price you see is what pay.
One guy got a good deal on his mobile tarrif, extra minutes & texts, with a new mobile thrown in by doing this.
Im a bit of a wimp on my own... if Im doing it on someone elses behalf or with a mate I'd be fine and a right cheeky sod!
Are you a haggler? Got any good tips?

This is not quite haggling but it can save you money.
If youve got sky tv and have had it for a while phone them up and pretend that your thinking about cancelling your subscription to sky and they 9 times out of 10 will let you keep it for a discounted rate for an extra 3 months and then just carrying on paying it after. I suppose that this in theory could work with most subsriptions that you have.
Im ok haggling over the telephone but im useless at doing it out shopping, say at the local market. My friend never pays full price for anything she definately has the gift of the gab. I need to go shopping with her more often.
louise xx
I love haggling, i know most Brits feel ashamed at asking for discount or trying to negociate a better than advertised deal, but if you over come that and get a bit cheeky, then you will be surprised what can be done.
The secret is to be friendly and non threatening. Always smile, exchange a few pleasantries first, we all want some passion while were being fucked and this is no different. So go on a charm offensive, be cheeky, saucy, make a few jokes, compare the deal to a fictional one youve just been quoted, do a bit of ameture dramatics if needs be.
I went with a friend to get some carpet, she eventually walked off in shame and started the car, but i got her a damn good deal.
I asked his price for the carpet and haggled over that, then for underlay and haggled that down, then gripper rods, thresholds and fitting and got that down, .......then added together and asked for best price if i bought it all together....just when he had enough, the killer blow.....how much for cash
Individual, multiple, total
3 lots of discount, and never be afraid to walk out the door, if its a wet wednesday afternoon and there are no customers, hes gonna deal.
Its amazing what you can get, specially when you take your car to a garage and dress accordingly, but thats a different story cos a 'Bj goes a long way'
You have nothing to loose and its fun too, so come on give it a go.
Right, whos first? biggrin

For the bj :rascal:
I found a similar situation with the AA. At last renewal I was planning to switch provider and complained that new AA customers got about 25% off the price I was going to be charged for renewal, and they imdediatly offered me this reduced price.
So I will play 'hard to get' in future and see if discounts are offered.
Maybe I should also play hard to get on SH and see if this offers any advantages?
I've been trying to haggle freebies for my sponsorship so much lately I'm getting quite a dab hand at it. I need the practice for when I get to the Marakesh souks :giggle:
Obviously it's no use trying it in Tesco or Asda but certainly give it a go elsewhere. If you can pay by cash, all the better.

I always try and get things cheaper tbh, sometimes it works sometimes it doesn't but always worth a go.
Mind you it is part of my job, so that helps I suppose.
I'm way to English to haggle but ex was a demon.
We perfected a technique where she would talk to the salesman and I would look bored and restless. When we were offered a price she would ask me what I thought. I would um and ahh and say we could get it elsewhere cheaper and lo and behold the price would drop.
I think this was more to do with her steely personality than my contribution. redface lol
A lot of places will say "if you see this anywhere any cheaper we'll match the price.." I suppose this could be seen as haggling but other than that I'm not aware we do this here.
We went to Turkey a few years back and it was great fun watching Jay haggling for a Louis V. bag which they 100% assured us was genuine.. yeah right! lol
I always haggle for anything. If you dont try, you dont get. What you got to lose.
Always haggle in Thailand!!! :P

Always haggle in Thailand!!! :P

Two for the price of one. lol
It goes something like this:-
Me to seller:- how much is this?
Seller:- how much you want to pay?
(seller gets calculator out)
Me:- you must tell me a price
(what ever the seller tells you half it and then start)
Seller:- you put amount (handing over calculator)
Well after a lot of tooing and froing (sp?)
Finally you arrive at a price, normally somewhere between half and ¾ of what was originally asked.
Then to throw a spanner in the works you ask to buy 10 off the same item!!
Now this sort of haggling could take up to 30mins to arrive at a price, but normally worth in it the end.
Although it has taken the guys that have been out there with me some time to get this haggling business right!! rolleyes
And I am talking clothes, gifts etc here, not women!

Sarah no! mad
You dont haggle when your in a foreign country. I suppose in your situation it wasnt ba but when people insist on haggling with market sellers in places like egypt that pisses me off, the sellers may be overpricing but they do it because they are POOR, whats a couple more egyptian pound to the average tourist? nothing
Drewxcore,
In Thailand the sellers EXPECT you to haggle, if you pay the full price they first ask for, they are shocked  as some one the other year found out!! lol
But you don't haggle with the beach fruit, food or ice cream sellers.
We rarely pay full price for anything. Most things in life are negotiable. You need confidence and a little cheek but it's great fun.
When I was securing nerw business in my last job my potential clients used to ask me if my prices were negotiable I used to reply. "Only upwards"

They only expect you to haggle because thats what they have had to put up with for years. You must be able to see my point of view here that its not a good thing.

Actually you may find that in some countries it's incredibly impolite and positively rude NOT to haggle with the vendor. If the locals are haggling, then you SHOULD haggle too because it's like a game to them. They will never ever be pushed into going below a price that they're not making a nice profit on anyway.
I have just haggled with virgin media.... and ended up getting free broadband for however long I decide to stay with them..... smile :) :) :) yippee!!!!
just pointed out to them that i was thinking of leaving them for sky (since i already have there TV package) and their free broadband....so if they could tell me why i should be paying 15 quid a month for the same thing i would love to hear it....
they couldn't......
I won....
seriously though... normally being on the other end of a customer services phone, it doesn't pay to be agressive, the more nasty you are..they less likely you are to get anything out of them... keep your cool and be nice, i have been a ton more persuaded by nice people being rational....and we do strive for a happy ending... honest!!!!

i heard on the radio today that virgin media and sky couldn't come to a deal....so Virgin lost the rights to broadcast Sky 1,2 and 3.
yep.... I have sky for TV.... but telewest/nthell/virgin media for the phone/internet
so I have a foot in both camps.....
My mum however is not so lucky.... she just had virgin media for everything..... I have been told already in no uncertain terms that if I don't tape 24 for her and send it down... I am out of her will!!!! smile
i have lost sky one,
gonna miss the new series of Rescue me sad
and bones :(

Oooooooo I should have asked your advice before calling them yesterday... they were helpful but just had my services cut down to a more manageable level. (My life of luxury went with my job). I shall remember this in future though... :)

In some countries corruption is rife and inbuilt into the system, by doing that you may encourage even more corruption...sad but true!
Also, if you pay the full price are you helping those that *really* need it?
I do understand where your coming from and I thought the same as you before I did some research.
Ive totally changed my mind now and would rather *give or help* some other way. Like taking something with you thats needed (find a local charity and find out what they actually need on the ground), give some time of your holiday to an orphanage or go on a *Reality Tour* (also called slum tours) where 80% of the money goes to the people that live there (they are also paid to do the tours).
An next time Im buying carpets...Gemini please come and stay with me lol

Well twelve months ago I was promoted and the new role came with a car. I chose the option where the company paid me a wedge every month, and I bought and paid for the upkeep of a car.
So armed with a bag load of money which wasn't really ours, we (thats Dawnie and me) went off shopping for a car.
After visiting many car showrooms, we decided on the car we wanted, but it was a little over budget. I just kept my mouth shut and let Dawnie reduce the young sales guy to tears. When she had tied him in a knot and ripped any notion of commission out of his head, he called in his sales manager for backup.
This didnt phase Dawnie at all, and she still managed to beat this guy down more. To top it off, she blagged a full set of car mats too. - And as it's a 7 seater car, they wern't cheap.
Overall haggle was around a grand discount.
Thoroughly embarrassed, I went to the other side of the showroom as I volunteered to pay for the car on my switch card. You think you can remember your pin number? Try keying it in with a value on the screen that totally scares the hell outta you.
