Do you celebrate or mark Halloween in any significant way?
I've been shopping today and wow, how much Halloween stuff?! It was never such a big deal when I was a kid, except when our American relatives were over.
What do you do for Halloween?
We don't do anything - but we don't have kids in the house. Our neighbours' little 'uns go round the street for trick/treat. We have a dish of sweets and satsumas ready for them. It's no big deal.
When my son was small we did a Halloween tea which included brains (popcorn and melted toffees), eyeballs (lychees with black grapes in them) and guts (spaghetti with a thick tomato sauce). Just a bit of gruesome fun.
It's a corruption of the name All Hallow's Eve of course. How many attend church the next day to do the actual celebrating of All Saint's Day (1st November)? Maybe the Church should offer a dish of sweets and have the kids go in fancy-dress - it would be more fun than the usual service. biggrin
At least Halloween is something to look forward to as the nights draw in.
Oooh your Halloween tea sounds fun foxy!
A large bowl of sweets for the local kids who come round with their parents.
I make them sing me a song first / or they have to put their hand in a black sack which contains wet leaves (except they don't know that)
i dont do anything for it
i ignore the door too
hopefully people round here will have got used to leaving my house alone this year smile
American bollocks.
I have heard of many elderly people who are terrified on this night, with kids banging on the doors non stop.
We seem to get most things shit from the USA, and this has only recently become big business in the UK. When I was a kid it was never celebrated in the way it is now, if celebrated is the right word.
Glorified begging anyway I have heard it called.
Party time for the little uns. Start at midday and have a few of their friends over, have hot dogs and burgers, with ghoulish games and bob the apple. Then get the kids to their own houses so their parents can take them trick or treating. The parents can then relax in the evening. Everyone is sooooo excited.

Well,as always now i refrain from posting,as honesty and opinion are treated as there is a lot of misinformation here.
Halloween is a fab festival, replacing beltane and the anti catholic burnings of bonfire are a number of traditions that have survived the centuries, turnip lanterns were meant to scare aware the spirits of the dead as they sought the were left to appease the pixies, who delighted in sending spirits astray.
There is no more british festival to those of us who remember our celtic roots.
i am taking my children to a light festival on the 31st,i would rather they celebrate something positive than have cod beliefs pushed down their throats
Now let the wankers start, and people wonder why the forum is dead

Mod edit: Inappropriate text deleted
Also who exactly are the " wankers "?
As I have said before Sweet pea.....is it any wonder people respond to you in the way they do, with comments like you have made above, and many others.
You do NOT help your cause at all.

No not ALL of it originates from Britain!

The trick and treating which I hate originates from Ireland.
A strange thing to celebrate nowadays I would have thought, and banging on peoples doors for " treats " is begging in which ever form you want to paint it.

No actually I did not Powers.
My Father especially looked upon it as begging, which of course it was.
Plus also many kids that were begging for money, ended up buying fireworks with the money and then letting them off in the streets, two weeks before firework night. Pretty much what they do now....or nowadays probably buy cans of beer with the money, get pissed and then frighten every fucker out there.
But saying that penny for the guy has decreased hugely since I was a kid as I very rarely see any kids doing that nowadays.
Inflation dear chap...
it must be at least a G3 mobile now or an iPod, the invitation assisted by the display of a knife or a gun.

So going back to the original point.......that you stated that it was American, then your link shows you were WRONG again.
Thanks for that

Awwwwww Kenny. Stop being a cry baby and admit it when you are wrong. Especially when you give the evidence. Now that made me laugh me socks off rotflmao:rotflmao::rotflmao::rotflmao:

Dave_Notts
One of the things I find ironic about the modern celebration is that with the trick or treating kids are encouraged by their parents to take sweets from strangers after telling them the rest of the year that they shouldn't.
Apart from the trick or treating thing I like Halloween. Yes it's irreverant and outside of organisations that like to control social norms like the church or gov't so in that respect it appeals more. As long as people respect each other during it then go for it. If Pensioners are worried they should put notices up that they don't want to be bothered ( and should be left alone )
I used to really enjoy mischief night too hehe

What is rather pathetic is not the fact I was partly wrong, but the childish glee in which you come across when making your point Davey. Really need to get out a tad more Davey.
Still am glad to have lightened up what would have been a rather dull week for ya.
Still have to be a tad more careful in what I say, you being a Moderator and all that.
Why was my text removed??
Bring back Samhain!!!!!!!!
Fires and feasting. Far better than trick or treating. In fact, get babysitters in, leave the kids at home and get out and have a fire-festival and a hog-roast.
cool idea sarah,
I just do a bowl of sweets which hubby is on door duty this year and I am walking round with the little lad

Partly wrong? Nope, you were fully wrong, I pointed it out and you have now thrown your toys out of the pram. Get over it Kenny.

More festivals is what is needed. Get the community together and have a good time. Sounds good to me

Absolutely childish behavior from somebody who works for the site.
Press the report button? lol
Yes I am sure I will get the right answers, another typical double standard of the site. So it is ok to delete my text but ok to leave in bits about calling other members wankers? I have had five pm's stating that is a nonsense.
Still as I have already said....I am sure it has made your week, but I still believe that a moderator of the site should be there to moderate, and not to actually stoke the fires.
Still your certainly not the only one, and having a spat with a Moderator is not a good idea with the ban button at their fingertips.....
Still for me I am past caring and people wonder and ask why the forum is almost dead.
Still back to the original topic....
