You may have seen that government are thinking about teaching 'happiness' at school. Now what a load of bollox you may think! I have just posted on a BBC blog where many were saying just that...........................................I didn't...........................
Given the average age of depression has moved from 30 to 14 then happiness is a serious issue.
I am going out of my way to now say that I think it may be one of the most important qualities of a healthy life style ( along with a dam fine sex life )
Can it be taught? should it be taught? does it matter????????
Your thoughts here are valid for and against but I am going to go out of my way to find happiness every day from now on lol.
Oh and I havent been sectioned .................yet .......................
one of the things they are supposed to address is self esteem. Personally many problems in peoples lives are due to low self esteem and lack of worth. If they can do this with even 1% of the kids it will be worthwhile!! Think of all the relationships you had where you spent the whole time reasuring the other person, imagine how good it would have been if you didn;t have to!
I Think the main problem with this scheme is.............. its been put forward by the government, this means that no matter what (or how good it is) people will put it down.

so we need a Jamie Oliver for happiness then!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
What's the curriculuum cost to these lessons, have they said?
For the parents out there, as I'm not one so can only imagine - Are you really comfortable with yet another parenting role being handed over to the LEA?
Mike I'm sorry, but I have to disagree with you on this
Happiness as a lot of the couples here i'm sure n hope will agree with me is
"A loving partner and mutual respect for each other..if youve got that there aint much life can chuck at ya that you cant handle as in my book " Its the best"

As much as I love my Timmy and can't imagine being without him, my happiness is not reliant on him.
Yes, it makes difficult things easier to handle if you have support, but my everyday happiness is down to me.
It would be unfair to make anyone else wholly responsible for personal happiness, everyone around me contributes to my happiness and I'm responsible for the managing the rest.
I don't suffer from depression, but I know people who have/do, are you suggesting it's their partners fault that they aren't happy?
I don't think you are, but I'm sure you'll agree that being in a relationship isn't the be all and end all for personal happiness, there are many other contributing factors.

Someone , don't ask me who, has a thory that says the more you trust those around you the happyer you are.
In other words if you think you can leave the house unlocked and not be burgled; 1 happy mark.
If you think you can tell your friend something in confidence and it is not all over the street the next day; 1happy mark.
It seems reasonable to me. So by the time someone is 30 or 14 the world has been proven to be untrustworthy. Therefore depression!
I have thought long and hard about what I wish to write in this post, but it seems that I would probably end up typing about 3 pages. As per usual I want to say so much but instead I found a simple quote that sums it up perfectly.
Happiness is not something ready made. It comes from your own actions. - Dalai Lama

And people need to know that. I think the purpose of this item on the curriculum is to teach just that. its part of self worth and self esteem, not just trying to seek out reinforcement from others.

I really believe that happiness is not something that someone else can give you - it's something you give yourself. One of the biggest steps towards happiness, I think, is realising that you are ALREADY a whole person - you don't need 'another half' to complete you. Other people can give you all sorts of things, and can definitely contribute to your happiness - and not just partners, but friends, family, all kinds of people in your life - but if you depend on them for happiness, you're going to be disappointed.
I quite like the idea of teaching happiness in schools, actually. Of course it's something parents should be helping their kids to understand - but you only have to look around you to see just how many peoplearen't given any sense of self-worth or any 'tips on happiness' by their home life. If kids can be taught a few of the basics at school, it might save an awful lot of therapy and soul-searching later in life. Of course, self-help-book authors and publishers might not be too chuffed about it lol
It would depend on what they teach as the essence of 'happiness' and how to achieve it... if it's to stand on your own two feet, work hard and seek it yourself then I appprove. Too much over indulgence and pampering of the individual's 'right' to have their cake and eat it has led to some of the most spoilt, laziest and weakest aspects of our modern culture. Children are bored and unhappy at such a young age now as they have been dished up so many of life's goals as instant prepacked products without any effort on their part.... that they have lost all their 'wonder' at what a magical world it can be is a sorry and sad state to be in.
I agree with others here.... 'Happiness' shouldn't be about dependency on a partner, family, friends or material gains... it should be about taking responsibilty for yourself, your actions and your well being.

Spot on, by doing good deeds we not only help others, but feed our own self worth.

Thanks for replying guys to this thread. I actually take happiness pretty seriously as I think we are all far too serious these days and forget the gift of happiness we all have. Yes I believe it is something individual, something we control but it took someone to say to me last year that I could give myself permission to be happy and strangley enough that actually was a trigger to start me thinking ebout it.
I think somewhere along the line in the last few years I took life too seriously. I believe that teaching happiness at any age isnt a stupid thing and not as a seperate subject but just like other key and life skills being something we begin to believe in again.
Anyway if I go around with a big smile on my face it could be for a number of reasons:
I am happy
just had sex
just had sex again
just thinking about sex
I am about to be sectioned
lol
The average age for depression used to be 30 .......... it is now 14 !
I believe "happiness" should be taught in schools.
Our children are under so much pressure, and try so hard to get it right .
Self worth and learning to cope with coming second.......... being happy with what you have and where you are ....... should be taught in schools.

Yes, it's true that you shouldn't be reliant on someone else for your happiness, but if you're happy in a relationship and you lose it - it makes you unhappy Being in a bad relationship can make you unhappy therefore why can't being in a good one make you happy? There is a big difference between being unhappy and being depressed, usually there is a reason for your unhappiness, depression is a very complicated illness and there is not always a reason for it. It's very easy, when you're in a happy, loving relationship to say that ultimately your happiness is not reliant upon it. If it was taken away you may feel differently.
(by the way this wasn't addressed personally at anyone - I quoted Jas and mike for the points they made)
