Isn't today the one by tradition you have to pick dandelions to steep in tubs of water for making dandelion wine?
Careful now. We wouldn't want to offend anyone wink lol

Bit miffed at Google homepage today - nothing celebrating St. George's Day, but didn't they have something for St. Patrick's Day?
call me cynical but isn`t goggle owned by the yanks!! long term supporters of the Irish and only believe the English are quaint lol
Stuff St George - absolutely nothing to do with England - never even set foot in the place. An import from Turkey via William the Bastard (as he was known in his home-land) and his Norman invaders.
Yay for St Edumnd - the true English saint - martyred for his beliefs - in ENGLAND.

Damned good plan there.
We could have one for each set of newcomers - so Edmund for the Anglo-Saxons, George for the Normans, Eric Bloodaxe for the Vikings. That's 3 in a year. biggrin:D:D:D:D
Sounds like a plan Foxy, and i get to unwittingly offend someone 3 times a year blink

Google did put this up earlier...

But then pulled it ('cos it's a bit crap?), also seems to be some dispute when St George's Day is. Seems that the Church don't like it in Easter weekend, so it's on the 2nd May dunno Beats me, our local Church has got it's flag flying, maybe someone can clear this up for us?

The Church can't make their minds up when Easter is - had the internecine wars about it - people died ffs! And the current 'date' is so variable it isn't a date at all. The bloke died on a day - they have no idea what day it was so they made up a 'so many days after the first full moon after the Winter Solstice' - or some such. And they made it match a pre-christian Spring Fertility Festival (a far better use for a chocolate egg if you ask me) in order to crush/displace the existing spiritual beliefs of the people of this country. Being picky about clashing with a fixed date is not on. Especially since ST George is supposedly one of theirs?????
Seriously - I can see why HM Queen might want an official birthday - but I'm pretty sure no-one should have a varying death date.
Happy Shakespeare's Birthday!

Or what about Joan of Arc.. the only thing - the French say - that the British cooked properly...
Yeah, but George totally battered a DRAGON, meaning that no dragon has ever since hassled the English while they were out doing traditional English stuff like drinking WKD and stading outside off licences. smile

And his death day!
Someone gave me a gobful. They said that I was unpatriotic for having no flags and celebrating St Georges day, and the kind of person that doesn't hold English values, this is why this country is in such a bad state, etc, etc, etc, blah, blah, blah, left him go on for a full two minute rant.
I stood and listened to him patiently. After he had paused for breath he asked, "What is your excuse"
I said...........
I'm Welsh lol

Easter or St Georges day, they are all just symbols same as Christmas. If you are Christian you worship at Easter due to your faith and if you a patriotic English person you celebrate on St Georges day simply for that reason. The dates and actual historical accuracy are unimportant. In a world cup I'll fly a flag with a St George cross on it but doesn't mean I think St George was a English dude who slew a Dragon its just a symbol of my patriotic view.

I have to say I disagree with the bolded bit. Purely my own feeling, as an engineer and Virgoan. Every effort should be made to establish the correct dates. Country saints must have a verifiable association with the country. If we take it to the extreme - the red cross on a white field is symbol of 'St George of England' - except he wasn't. And he's the saint of loads of other countries too. We have part-shares in a saint of conquest - by others of us. Not an acceptable saint in my eyes.
For historical accuracy yes but for flying flags at world cup games does not really matter. Thing is you could remove St George now, the church did already didnt they? and in fact more people will fly it just for the hell of it. Its a symbol and thats all what actually happened is unimportant unless you are a historian.
