... trying really fLucking hard to stay out of the debate about students .....
... I must suppress this rant ......
helen,
i for one know how hard you have been working at uni and how many sacrifices you have had to make.
a lot of people forget that the "loans" you get to keep you at uni are just that.. LOANS and as such have to be paid back!
you are not living off everyone else as some people are trying to make out.
you have been awarded what is in reality a small amount of money from your university.
this money belongs to the university.. NOT the goverment and is specifically set asside for the purpose of access funds.. not taken direct from everone elses taxes.
they have given you this money based on an assessment of your financial situation and so have determined that you DO need it and ARE entitled to it.
what you chose to spend it on is entirely up to you!
it makes NO difference in the slightest to anyone else if the money goes on a text book or a train fair.... so YOU decide hun.
no one should critisize you for chosing to spend cash that is rightfully yours in anyway you chose.
everyone is entitled to some chill out time and a social life.. dont let anyone make you feel bad for it.
have fun spending it hun.
xxxxxxxxxx
Hear hear, WBB - you enjoy the money just as you see fit, Helen.
Mike.
Just for the record, at the end of the last academic year, my university hardship fund had in excess of £20,000 of unclaimed cash.
There are also other hardship funds within the unversity that are funded by local business and donations by respected 'elders' for want of a better word. These are private funds for certain departments that have nopthing to do with your tax money. The university will encourage students to apply to the general hardship fund before approaching these other funds.
The bottom line is that all education should be free. It is not the fault of the students that it is not, but they are the ones suffering. In a few years, many of these students will hoepfully get really well-paid jobs which will put them in a high tax bracket, plus they'll have to pay back their student loan with interest. I'm not too great at maths or economics but I'm pretty sure that will do more than pay back the piddly couple of hundred quid they were given at uni.
Helen - you enjoy this money. It's not a lot but I'm sure you can put it to good use - as you see fit!
I remember not so long ago when you posted on here how you were working all hours and becoming physically ill at the stress and lack of sleep. You deserve every penny, chicken!
Thanks WBB and Marya.....I WILL enjoy the money and use it to put a bit of happiness into my very hectic life......I think i deserve that....
And FoxyLady...I don't want to get into an Argument with you but the money is there and available for everyone.....I didn't get very much compared to someone with kids and a husband who would have gotten much more......try to be happy for me.
Helen.
I am happy for helen getting a hardship fund. I do symapathise with Helen's problems. I was a student and I struggled to survive. 3K lasting me a year. This included books food rent travel.
The goverment has not got a clue. They should keep the student loan as it is but pay for the students ren. This would mean a least the student would have somewhere to live. I found it imposibe to get a job that did not interfee with my studies.
If it wasnt for me going to uni, i would not be doing the job I am doing (yes i do want to leave it but...) I would be working in a lo wpaid crap manual labour job.
