Hi Guys......just wanted to let you all know, cause I'm so excited, that I have been awarded £432 from the Hardship Fund at Uni!!!!!!!
This means for me that I can afford to come to all the Munches and Meets in the next few months.....LoL.....which may sound silly but it's not enough for a holiday and so I thought I'd spend it having fun over a few months rather than just one or two weeks away.....
I'm so excited!!!! :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
That's fantastic news!!!
I hope it makes for a great Christamas and amazing time in the new year!
M

Thats really good new Helen, well done! smile
Nice one, Helen !
I recall the funny looks I got off some of the staff the day after I got my hardship fund when I pulled up at college on my new chopper wink .
We, being without a nice bike is genuine hardship, right ? :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
Brilliant news Helen!!
The wonderful uni hardship fund! I applied for £600 to buy a PC 'cos didn't have time to spend at uni to use theirs and I kept getting bollocked for submitting hand-written essays.
They gave me one of their PC's - not the prettiest of things but it does the stuff - and £200 for software which my mum already had so I was quid's in!
Make sure you spend some, if not all, of that loot on having fun!!!
Being without a decent chopper is surely more of a hardship
Great you must be so pleased.
I will think of you when im scrimping, scraping and staying in to pay my tax bill next year.
At least i know my hard hearned cash has gone to a cause that will be valuable to societt
That's great news, Helen - congratulations!
Mike.
i belive that money is to go towards your education rather than holidays im glad my big yearly tax bill is not being wasted by poncing students .

A good ride is always guaranteed on my big red chopper .........groan. Well, I've been in SH a while and sooner or later I just had to say it. Cheesy chat up line, but it has actually worked on a few occasions ! :silly:
Anyway, the bike is a Z1000. You can see pics of my big red chopper by arrangement.

Helen has missed out on a lot of this years events because she has been skint and saving towards her education, I dare say she has missed out on a lot of things not just SH gatherings, so why should she miss out on some of the stuff other people get to do?
Give her a break money well spent i say
Well done H - i may get to meet you yet then lol kiss

Why should i work 6 days a week to fund someone elses social life?
More worringly, I have a friend who was struggling at university, really struggling, she had a lot of books to buy and other expenses related to her course. She applied for a hardship loan and was turned down and as the uni had spent all its all its hardship fund for that year. She had a straight choice get a job and eat or stay at uni and starve. Unfortunately she had to give up !!She would have been a doctor by now!!
Need i say more?

my thoughts exactly
Hiya DH,
£432 does not sound a lot when you think of the total cost of the tuition fees, travelling, books, equipment etc etc that a student routinely has to pay from their own pocket, while being unable to earn a full wage because of all the studying.
But when you are at the point when every penny you earn from trying to balance your more than one job with full time education is re-invested into self funding it yourself, it is a bloomin fortune.
Now, the only decision is, who gets the first round in at the Essex munch, you or me? wink

well should it not go towards tution fees as intended or blow it on a week in the sun !!

It was a bit of a coincidence that I got the Red Zed on the day after my hardship fund came through.
You see I had applied to my bank for a career development loan and been turned down. They had also rejected my request for funds for books and a pc. Yet when I discuused these matters with their loan adviser, he said that although the bank could not help with my educational needs, they would be happy to consider an application for a vehicle loan ! Really ! I am not making this up. So, of course I thought, "Why not?" and duly applied for a loan for a bike. This came though while my application for the student hardship fund was being processed. Being an honest man, I spent the loan money on the purpose for which it had been given, ie the bike.
Arriving at college on a new bike the day after my hardship fund came through did raise a few eyebrows. Then again, I dare say that eyebrows would have been raised anyway as the old Zed is a bit of a head turner. :bounce: :bounce: :bounce:
I'm not sure where this post is going . I think I'm trying to express something about the priorities of some financial institutions. It certainly was not "responsible" lending on their part. But in the circumstances I wasn't going to complain cool 8-) 8-) .
well should it not go towards tution fees as intended or blow it on a week in the sun !!
Only to those on planet "My blinkers are fitted so tight I can't see a bloody thing beyond the end of my nose"
I believe the financial term is called "virement" £432 of personal money, earned by working hard, that wasallocated to educational costs, has now been released by the receipt of a hardship grant. This money can now be re-allocated to an alternative budget i.e. buying Kat a drink. cool

it must be so lonely on planet perfect Foxy ............ :!: :!: :!: :!:
Good news for you Helen.
You are now faced with two choices - spend the money on wine, women and song - or fritter it away wastefully.
The first time I paid 40% tax, I wh-oooooped for joy and partied a whole week ! Until my accountant came out with me and gave me a slap! (I think she may have enjoyed that more than the partying)
Mine's a large Irish btw Helen wink

I understand your point, but I don't think you should be getting at Helen, it your MP you should canvess to try and get the system changed.
To be honest I don't think cash should be handed out - the payments should be in the form of vouchers that can be spent on the reasons of your claim. i.e Supermarket vouchers etc.
But it's never going to happen - so fair play to you Helen, enjoy the cash and have a good time!!!
Clarista its easy to have a go at me , but one thing i did learn at university is that we all have a duty to the rest of society and part of that duty is to support ourselves when possible. When not possible then we are fortunate enough, in this country, to have the right to certain benefits. However when we choose to abuse those benefits we make a mockery of the system and take advantage of others.
I am old enough to remember the old student grant system. It was partly because of students squandering their grant on booze and drugs that we now have this awful system of student loans.
This post is not directed at any individual and clearly everyone has the right to spend their own budget how they wish.
PS plant perfect has been rather fun this week!!!

Andy sorry i cant go for the vouchers idea, although i apprecieate the sentiment.. Students are or should be the responsible citizens of tomorrow. If they cant llearn how to allocate their own budgetsat this stage they never will and i would question their abillity to take responsability for public and private budgets in the future. University is about learning so much more than whats on your degree and management of finance is part of that experience, vouchers would only postpone that experience and make the student more dependant and irresponsible
Glad you will get to munches and get out more Helen!!!!!!!
Foxy fem you raise some interesting comments here. I was a one parent familiy as a student and remember it being very tough. I have no view on how students spend their money other than to say I just hope students have a brilliant time being students and sod worrying about money!!!!!!! You have the rest of your life to be sensible!!!!!!!!!
Did being a student with no money help me influence the size of budgets I have now? No but my academic ability and experience within working and further learning did. The reason for the grant now has nothing to do with students squandering grants on booze and drugs. The rationale for the grant being introduced was far more squander millions a year on research but we do not not question that so my view on student grants is I believe that education should be free up to degree level. I also believe that a degree today has the street value that 30 years ago A levels had so thats my reason for not charging!!!!!!!!
Anyway
happy xmas everyone..................................................
Thanks for all your well wishes.......I appreciate that.....
(and Kat, are you really planning on coming to the South East Munch? If so, I'll buy you the first drink wink)
And for the record, I actually DO work an extra job as well as working 8 hours a day at the hospital......so I wanted to have a bit of fun with the money that I've been granted.....sorry if that upsets a few people......
