.......especially as this is my first new-thread post.............hey everyone..........but....
upon opening my inbox today i found 6 mail delivery failure notices obviously sent somehow by spammers spoofing my email addy! i've read all the firewall/virus threads here, checked my zonealarm, run the shields up test etc, and i'm showing 100% stealth mode, so how are they doing it, what can i do about it, and should i be worried?????
i seem to remember foolishly hitting the reply button on a viral email i was sent, but, surely to send mail from my aol account they'd actually need access to it, or my pc????
all help gratefully received, and i'll say a proper hi to you all, and try and post something witty, cultured and urbane, when i can match the skills of the forum regulars. still got a long way to go on that score though! ;-)

Yes. But they can forge your address into the "From:" field of a message without needing access to your PC. It's actually one of the easiest things in the world to do, and lots of spammers and viruses do it.
The likelihood is that your PC is secure, and your address were just forged as the sender of these messages. Unfortunately, there's nothing you can do about it. :-( But on the plus-side, there's no danger to your computer so it's not worth worrying about.

There's a whole thread from the other day (Virus) about this very thing - disregard my half hearted attempts at levity with my cold virus - it should reassure you about your PC. You haven't got a virus - someone else has and it has read their email address book and you are in it!
Worry not - keep on being stealthy. The Fab FredFlintstone posted a great PC checker site a while ago ( ) which should reassure you, or get you scurrying to close ports.
Now, don't ask me anymore cos that's as much as I know!!! The Mighty Fred is away at the mo but I spy the Mightier Nallers around the site and he could spout about this for days if you encourage him only slightly!! lol

i've read all the recent threads on firewalls, viruses of various kinds, etc and recently reformatted and rebuilt my HD and started afresh with firewalls, virus checkers, spyware and stealth checks etc etc ad laborium ;-) so i was disturbed to find spammers using my addy! thanks for the help!
Bottle o' dog for nallers in the GFZ this weekend, if i can get hold of a swipecard! ;-) and whatever the rest of you are drinking?

i've been very careful about hijacking threads, but it's my own thread so hey what the hell! (this time) ;-)
it was actually on your recommendation that i came to dip my toe in the forum's waters, so thanks for the tip!!!! ;-) think we're both increasingly pissed off with the chatroom of late, as are many other regs judging by the volume of forum posts on the subject! but yes the forum is infinitely more civilised, cultured and sophisticated!!! with the added bonus of being FUNNY AS F**K ( apologies for the vulgarity! ;-) ) the wit here is unbelievable! you guys could make a living doing this!!!!!!!! rotflmao

a LOT of the time reading posts here.
wonder if most newbies here leap into the chatroom and place ads and then eventually GET THE POINT! hope i have!

hate to think i might be responsible for you fretting.............;-)
but the chatroom used to be such a friendly, open, welcoming place, even 2 months ago when i started using it. now all i see is serial pm'ers get kicked, then rejoin to pm again! abusive people who shout 'who wants me dick' then get abusive at the lack of takers! people being intolerant and abusive towards certain regulars who don't fit with their ideas! etc etc etc. and i see ops like you giving up their time and taking on a big responsibility getting abuse and admin@ complaints when you kick 'em! and valuable ops like ian and dawn getting fed up of it, and a lot of the regs i know coming in less and less and less!!!! opping's a thankless task i know so a big THANK YOU to you and the other ops! :-)!

Well I cant argue with you about this one hun.... only wish I could... It is a thankless task, but one that we all try to do to the best of our abilities (No comments please.... ) I think that what has happened is that as the chat room has got more popular, people are more inclined to use the "I cant follow the room" excuse to pm... It's just a shame that they dont realise that it's more likely to put people off than get them a meet... Manners are paramount in this scene and unfortunately alot of people think that because we are on the forum/in the chat room we will s**g anyone.... This as most of us know isn't true, and in this day and age you have to be fussy... I cant speak for any of the other op's but both Steve and myself try to make sure that the chatters can chat in a hassle free zone and that everyone respects everyone else.... The op's have taken a firmer stance on the rules recently but this is due to the volume of chatters, 100 people is not uncommon now...

Just for your info there is an email client that allows you to view your email before downloading it from the server on POP and IMAP accounts. That way you don't download anything suspicious. You can get it if you PM me for it..........Hard
