I've just become 10 times faster since yesterday afternoon cool
After getting in touch with the nice people at AOL to originally complain about something, I came away, not only with the problem unsolved, but also with Broadband, which the nice man said I had been 'specially selected' for :smile2: at a price of course rolleyes but I didn't hear that bit, I just heard the 'specially selected' bit 8-)
Now for the worrying bit  ...... My puter seems to be really slow at times - and just now a message came up on my screen to say 'there is no disk in drive H, please insert disk and press ok' ....... well I wasn't doing anything with my drive H  I was PMing someone.......... Does this mean there is someone else looking at my puter? or am I being paranoid?
This is from someone who knows naff all about puters - the same person that last year decided she wanted to try the 'Back Orifice' hacking tool on someone else and accidently installed it on her own puter  redface ....... that was on my old puter tho, not this one.
So, am I hacked? whadooooIdooooo?
Now worried cos puter has sped up again now - does this mean my hacker has cleared off? If so, why has he cleared off - Have I bored him away sad
Could be a number of things but to be on the safe side run a complete virus check (make sure it's up-to-date) Also download Spybot from and run that.
Broadband users are more open to more attacks so you need anti-virus and and firewall software. You probably have some like Norton anti-virus and Symantec. But I highly recommend Spybot and Ad-Aware (by lava soft) available to download free off the net (do a search) to root out those buggers that like to squat on your hard-drive.
You may have a Trojan and someone is accessing your puter, so get the above software. Also remove your modem link when you are finished because they can still use your puter and dial all over the place when you are not there.
Regards LC.
You do have a firewall don't you??????   confused :? :?

:uhoh: :uhoh: :uhoh: :uhoh:
Ummmmmm, not exactly ........... but I do have a Pop-Up blocker biggrin
OMG, I'm just running a free AVG thingy I got ages ago (but not run cos the last time took ages! and found nothing) ........ and it's so far scanned just 1.4 gig ............ and found 766 infected files
Shit, what do I do now? dunno - I'm only a tiny way through the scan
And I'm sure I read somewhere that this new AOL 9 comes with a firewall installed dunno
Don't panic. Let it run. There will probably be an option to clear up the mess when its run. You will need more than a popup blocker though. Get the other stuff. Spybot -Search and Destroy... He He. Do regular checks evey day or so.
Thanks Lovecommando kiss .... so where do I get this Spybot thing? is it easy to find? And should I run that and this AVG thing? or uninstall the AVG and do spybot?
Look above you and Sussexguy has given you a link to Spybot.
Hopefully you can download it. I have had problems getting hold of some software. It seems the hackers block of access to it and you get a can read file page or something. Good luck.
However I recommend you run your virus scan or whatever whilst you are logged off or the browser is closed. These processes take time I know but...he Big Brother live is on, take a break or something! Just an Idea.
Firstly you may want to remove want your AVG has found first. Hopefully it won't remove anything important Ha Ha. Iv'e had no probs.. perhaps a few cookies will go...You may have the option to edit?remove what you want but 700+ thingies...I'd just go for it..
for Spybot and you don't need to uninstall AVG. Also run the AVG update to make sure you get the virus definitions for new viruses, the update button is on the lefthand side. After you click it another window will pop up and click the button which says internet.
Another thing to do is go along to windows update and get all the security patches for windows.
Misschief, can I suggest you read the sticky in the Cafe about this ??

Nice one Sussexguy smile
As I mentioned above, when I have tried to download various types of Antivirus software I've frequently come up against the 'page not found' problem over and over. Is there some sort of sabotage going on? Know anything about this?
I've not noticed any problems confused Spybot uses mirror sites to distrubute the program and updates so it's possible you happened to be redirected to a site which has exceeded it's bandwidth limit.
Sussexguy thank you kiss ....... sorry I just didn't see the link before redface
I always get sidetracked by your avatar! Love it :lol2:
OK gonna go and get that as soon as this AVG thing has finished. My windows seems to update really regularly, I presume it downloads anti virus stuff, but not so sure now confused

Ha!!! That's where I originally got the AVG idea from. Wow did you actually think I knew what an AVG was? :? Mind you, I only got to the end of post one, presumed I had any problems fixed for life and left em talking clever stuff etc.

It's just a good idea to do this. Run the programs while you are off-line especially with something like Spybot and Ad-aware. In fact they may remind you to do so.
Also if you have both these programs Spybot reminds you that Ad-aware may detect Spybot files as something unwanted, but I've had no probs with that. You just have to be aware of what you are removing sometimes. Anyway....don't worry about that now.

By the way are you eventually able to access the sites or not?
Sussexguy.
Yes I have been able to get what I want eventually but I have come up against this problem. I just wondered if anyone else had and does this suggest ther is some sort of hacker war going on. Had no probs getting Spybot but had difficulty getting Ad -Aware.
As various companys have a vested interest in tracking users and are using 'Tool Bar Hijacking' and such, the Ad-aware program is very effective against these and therefore may have become a target for the hackers. Just a thought. I have no difficulty downloading other stuff, just when I try to get hold of something useful to stop the abusers.
Goto c:windowssystem32driversetc and open the file called hosts using notepad if there's any entries that look like 0.0.0.0 delete them, also look for any addresses of common sites.
Also remember what FredFlinstone posted YEARS ago about using to see if your PC is in 'stealth' mode! Especially important if using broadband as, if not, others in your locale can hop on your broadband connection and use it - only problem with that is that they could be downloading really bad stuff (child porn etc) and it shows as going to you!!
So, thanks to FredFlinstone for that and thanks to Nallers for making sure my broadband was secure (he mumbled somethign about MAC but I'm not too sure!!)
End of techno-shite bit cos that 's all I know!!! biggrin
Re , not being able to access anti virus site , yes some of the recent worms have prevented access to these sites by altering registties , so you cant get the update that killls the worm .
I run Antivar , scanning twice aweek and with the AVguard on all the time , spybot , and after clearing the drive ran the "innoculate " program which fhas been 100% ever since . I have a hardware Firewall in the DSL router I bought , oh and I run the free Symantec "Housecall" about once a month , it often finds stuff that AV guard missed , usually in an archive , but why have that cr*p anywhre on your m/c
Re Mischiefs slow m/c , there is a good chance it has been turned into a "Zombie" and was busy sending spam when it slowed down . I was told by someone who runs a software firewall that it had a,log for attempted hacker attacks , and it was seeing thousands every day ! So yes within minutes of going ADSL always on you could have a problem. I'm sorry that this was not made clear to you when you went Broadband , it should have been pointed out by AOL , IMHO.
Hi Misscheif wave
OK if you're finding problems with AVG then there's a good chance you have got something lurking. When it's complete allow it to quarantine,/fix any problems and then run a Trend housecall scan ( ).That is a daddy of an antivirus and should find anything nasty.
You'll need to click on the "scan now" bit in the middle(ish) of the screen and it'll ask you where you are (country) and then download a little piece of software, then start scanning.
If it finds something, let it try and repair the problem. If it can't then make a note of any information it gives you about the problem it can't resolve and post it on here and we'll take it from there.
IMPORTANT BIT
1) Make sure you keep windows updated regurlaly. Once every 2 weeks at the most.
2) Make sure you keep your antivirus (AVG) updated as well. Again every 2 weeks at the most.
3) if you're on broadband, get a firewall, like Zonealarm and ensure it's configured correctly. There's a link in the "Antivirus and firewall" sticky at the top of the main forum page. There's also a link to a site that will test your firewall and tell you if it's configured correctly. Please use it.
4) Any documents you need or want to keep...BACK THEM UP NOW. I can't stress this enough. Both myself and a friend have had viruses and within a month of removing them windows has developed a fault and had to be re-installed, loosing ALL of our stored data (1.3 gigs of porn......gone.....just like that  rolleyes lol )
5) Get Adaware and Spybot and run them regurlaly as well. They remove "Spyware" that can track the sites you visit and also cause "conflicts" with some programs (could possibly be why you're getting the "drive" message dunno )
You can set the schedular to do all the updates automatically. Just click on "Start" in the bottom left, then programs, then Accessories, system tools and shedule tasks.(assuming you're using XP)
And if all that hasn't worried you, just think, if you're computer goes down no SH for at least a week. :eeek: :eeek: :eeek: :eeek:
Scary Bit...
If you access the Internet, either dial up or broadband, without a Firewall and Antivirus it takes less than 5 minutes before you are infected by one of the many worms. That's without surfing, downloading files or opening email. That's right, just by being connected to the Internet they will find you and infect you.
You must run both a Firewall and an Antivirus. As mentioned in the stickie, ZoneAlarm and AVG will secure your system, but only if they are regularly updated. You should check for updates daily, not once a week or fortnightly, daily.
ZoneAlarm and AVG have automatic systems for checking for updates. ZoneAlarm's is fully automatic, it will tell you when an update is available. AVG's could do with tweaking.
To set AVG to check dailybiggrinouble click on the AVG Icon in the System Tray (at the bottom right of your screen next to the clockOn the 1st screen (Resident Shield) make sure there is a tick in "Use heuristics"Click on the "Update Manager" tabMake sure "Allow Scheduled Update" is tickedEnter a time when you are usually using the computerSet the "Update if database is older than" and "If not successful, then repeat in" scroll boxes to 1Click on Apply click on OKThis will ensure that you are always up to date.
As well as Spybot you should also run Ad-aware once a week. They check for different vulnerabilities and complement each other. Ad-aware is available from:
As mentioned by another poster, you must also run Window's Update regularly - Minimum of once per month. Window's Update can be set to automatically check for updates.
In XP this is in Control Panel > System > Automatic Updates. In ME/98 this is in Control Panel > Automatic Updates. Please make sure it is switched on.
If you are connected to the Internet and do not have a firewall or Antivirus you will get infected. No two ways about it.

Personally I wouldn't download any so-called AVG or surveillance protection.
I got aol's recommended Spyware Protection and it caused more harm than good. It comes with free, added Trojan Horse - how nice of them. mad
I've got Grisoft and Norton installed but still clearing up the mess from Spyware. If you can't get a copy of these, I'd be happy to send you 'em.
Good luck
Mxx biggrin
P.S. Thanks to everyone who's given me IT advice in the past. I'm totally computer-illiterate and would be in a right state without you all xxxx

Well, that sounds about par for the course for AOHell... lol
Having 2 virus scanners running can make matters worse as they will constantly see each other's signature files as virus threats. Best to stick to just the one. An AV package won't get rid of spyware, that's what Spybot is for. Version 1.3 is the mutts nuts and it's completely free.
When I up-graded to broadband, it came with McAffe personal firewall. Looking at the log, there have been attempts to access various ports at a rate of 1 every 6 seconds, when the pc is online.
With respect to AdAware, Spybot etc...if you update adaware regularly it will pick-up every bit of ad and spy ware going, but just lately I've been getting attempts to deliver various diallers from porn sites...worrying, because adaware didn't pick them out. Also, you really need adwatch...which picks them up and deletes them as they arrive, and also won't allow any registry entries to be altered without the ok.
I reinstalled windows xp for a friend. I installed Norton from disc and then went onto the internet to do windows and Norton updates.
10 seconds after logging onto the net and into the windows site we'd benn clobbered by the lasser worm.
Used the removal tool without restarting the PC and then got zonealarm and the updates done. Touch wood everything seems ok so far, but it amazed me how quickly these things find an open computer, especially through broadband.
