There is a word for the situation you describe Bluefish and I cannot for the life of me remember what it is. Somebody better informed will pop in and tell you I am sure.
I suppose the Internet may well bear a lot of the responsibility for the number of people today whom might be dabbling in the swing/fetish/play/adult recreation scene. Lets face it, there have always been a lot of curious people in the world, and anonymous information gathering will no doubt encourage those people to look deeper.
something that I think (though am not sure) Ms Whips was focusing on was not 'swinging' as such, but the 'comfort level' as she describes it, to attempt, or even think seriously about it.
In my opinion, it is the information shared, not the resources/opportunities available that can build this comfort level through confidence.
On sites such as this and others, it's the wide range of people... all walks of life, all opinions, all shapes and sizes... that can help one relax with oneself... "there are other people like me, be that short/skinny... all the labels... who are quite happily enjoying themselves in all sorts of crazy and wild situations... experimenting with fun and games from the nearly mundane to the outrageously ..errrm, outrageous.
why can't I?
Indeed, why can't I? May as well eh? After all, other people don't seem to have an issue with it... could very easily just step out of my comfort zone for a while and if I don't like it, it's no great loss...
and then of course, once tried...hey! That was good! Shocking! How could I have possibly done that?
and what me so long?
There is of course the comfort and confidence that comes with age and life experience... all our lives experience change, and that can offer opportunity to branch out and try new things.
Life, it appears to me, seems freer... the general constraints of society are not quite as tight as they were.
throw a few of these ingredients into the same pot... and we could well have quite a saucie stew.

Sex is becoming so acceptable in nearly all its forms that its moving from being a pretty physical thing involving genitals to more cerebral things and maybe involving other things even such things as Eccles cakes.
One day it will all be just a headfu*k
i think there's a lot to do with the internet, but more than that there's just a heck of a lot more people about.
the net simply provides the ushering in process, providing a ready made virtual environment. from there its the choice to do or not to do.
swinging has always been around, but something that at one time few people could contemplate. but now it is something that anyone could do.
So I suppose there is more potential for more people.
