Hi everyone. I am in need if some help and htought I would assk you lot in here on the forum.
I am about to start my 3rd year at uni and have to decide this week on what to do my dissertation on. I am doing my youth worker degree so I have a couple of choices.
1. Cultural life of young people in Newport ( ) and Amsterdam - why is it that kids in Amsterdam who have everything like drugs on their doorstep have a lower crime rate and drug abuse rate than any other country in Europe?????
2. Childen or miniature adult - the way we dress our kids. Are we taking away their childhood and making them adults before they ready????
Really appreciate any thoughts on these two as I just cannot make up my mind. banghead :banghead:

Both interesting topics Mich, and both bound to be very hard work.
I know which topic would interest me more (children/miniture adults) afterall I think that there are too many kids out there trying to be grown up, with or without the help of parents.
But it's down to personal choice, I'm sure you'll decide which will be best for your dissertation, and I wish you luck!!

The second option is a personal gripe of mine. I've seen fishnets for 7 year olds. I was told the other day of a furore about kids knickers which said "dive in" on them. The other day, I saw PJ's for 5 year olds saying "my boyfriend is a fooballer."
Theres a woman at our kids school who has an 8 year old daughter. Last term, said daughter bought in a huge make up bag and was putting make up on her mates in the playground. A few days later, I heard the girls mum saying to a friend "I'm strict with her, she's allowed to wear mascara, and a bit of lip gloss, but I've told her that blusher & eye shadow is not appropriate for school."
I could have grabbed her gently by the throat & told her that it wasn't appropriate full stop. The mother is a classroom assistant ffs!
Sadly it starts so young- there are dolls encouraging our daughters to dress like street walkers aka "Bratz" mad They even have a version for younger kids :x :x (Search is not my friend, but I ran a thread- I think I called it The Bratz Generation dunno)
Anyway, I shouldn't be here- but good luck with whatever you choose!
I dunno if this is of any help but when I was at uni and stuck at what to base my assignments on, I used to go for the one the most appealled to me. if I still couldn't decide i used to go with plan B, research both topics then decide which one I can find most info on so I had enough references
Best of luck! biggrin

same here i have a huge problem wuth the way some parents use thier children as fashion accesories it drives me crazy, once i saw a mum in tescos with her young girl i would say around 7ish wearing a top with handprints on her chest where her breasts would be it took all my self control not to say something, well i say say something i actually wanted to shake some sense into the silly woman.
i am glad i had boys i found it much easier dressing them but i still wouldn't of bowed to any presure if i had girls to of bought them the miniture adult fashions i think it is disgracefull that the child clothing manufacturers even produce such things kids should b kids i mean ffs your a long time old they should enjoy thier youth without added presure to become adults so young
another of my gripes which i might get a but of lash back from but sorry i believe strongly about is parents getting thier childs ears peirced so young i work in a hairdressing salon and had mums bringing very young kids in to get it done not because the child asked for it but because they think thier child will want it doing eventually they trot them in going "it doesn't hurt honey i promise" ffs it does hurt don't lie to them then once they have the first one done and scream the place down cause it does hurt and they have been lied to by the one person they felt they could trust that person then holds the poor kid down kickin n screaming whilst the second one is done banghead :banghead: :banghead: it makes my blood boil i have stormed out of the salon mid cut just to stop me telling these people what i think so i keep my job rather glad i'm self employed now i can let rip at last although salon i'm now in doesn't do ear peircing rolleyes
whatever happened to freedom of choice shouldn't these kids b allowed to wait till they are old enough to ask to have it done my neice begged and begged from the age of 9 her mum made her wait a year to b sure and then explained it was very painfull and even though i still think this was too young i do feel she went a much better way about it unlike a girl i work with who took her 7 month old son the other day and got his done cause she thought as his dad had them it would look cute ffs
sorry ranting on :gagged: as u can guess this is a real bone of contention with me i hate the way adults try to make thier children mini adulte so as u can probably guess i would choose the second option but thats a personal choice and i have no idea what a disertation is in the first place dunno so good luck whichever you choose hunny :rose:
The first one is probably more topical at the moment with all the news about binge drinking and knife crime - there would be a wealth of material to research and discuss ... cultural and historical context and of course you could always squeeze a field trip in to Amsterdam (tee hee!)
The second one is more emotive. Kids have, historically, often been expected to be 'minature adults' i.e pre education acts they would have been out working at an age when our modern kids are still playing with toys. In that respect it seems that it's not so much a case of kids being turned into miniature adults but a situation where little girls specifically are being sexualised prematurely ... strange in a society that is concerned with .
Both subjects would make a fascinating dissertation ... which one 'grabs' you the most?
WOW Bouncy.... rant on. What you have said is so true. I have an 8 year old daughter who has asked to have her ears pierced and I am not sure whether to let her. In saying that, my mother wanted me to get her ears pierced when she was still a baby. Major arguments commenced over that. And to answer your question, a dissertation is 10 000 word essay evil
Both topics are appealing to me. Went to Amsterdam this year which is where I got this idea from. People can go into shops and buy speed, ecstacy and magic mushrooms etc..wtf !!!! Holland has the lowest , peadophile, drug related crimes in Europe.
Maybe I could put the 2 topics together confused: :?:
ooohhh I would go for number 2 too. Its a pet gripe of mine too....thank god I had 3 boys and a girl who thinks shes one!
I hate seeing little girls objectified like that!....what ARE these designers thinking when they make stuff with suggestive slogans on? or making padded bras for kids as young as 6 or 7. mad
Is it the designers fault for having the idea....the clients fault for asking and accepting the design in the first place, or the parents fault for buying the stuff?
When I was little I was thrilled with a matching 'big knickers' and 'long vest' set with the muppets on the front....whats changed in todays society, where its now de rigueur for kids to wear bras and thongs before they have left the hopscotch and cbeebies phase behind!
i think that could work hun bringing them together
and i think i could do a 10,000 word rant from time to time have to rein myself in once i get goin lol
good luck with it gonna b a lot of hard work your a better peep than me thats for sure wink
I've never done a dissertation, so I might be talking out of my hat here lol but -
I personally would go for the Holland one, mainly because the miniature adults one is so emotive, that it might be difficult to find many facts and figures about it.
It might run away with you, you might gather loads of opinions, without being able to draw any conclusion based on factual evidence.
Whereas in the Holland one, you can make an argument and quote statistics to back it up or to refute it.

I'd agree with that - I reckon you'd find more in the way of research and statistics.
So they wouldn't accept one about the Tweenies in Swinger Land then?
I would do the first one because it just sounds interesting to me.
I would also suggest doing a bit of background research on something simple like scholar google to establish what work has been done in both of the areas. You might even find some research that suggests a narrower field or possibly a different angle that interests you. Such as health or education dunno
Whatever you decide, good luck

Putting the social 'worth' of these too subjects to one side.
Just go for the one with the best field trips biggrin:D:D
Do you fancy Amsterdam (Ok Newport too, but pick a nice day and it should be ok), or Las Vegas with those dreadful mini-beauty pageants. banghead :banghead:
I'm sure there are plenty of people would volunteer to sacrifice their precious leisure time to keep you company and take notes :D:D:D:D:D:D:D:D
