Help! Computer people!

Hoping that either someone on here can help me or point me in the direction of a good computer forum where I can ask the same question!
I have a JVC digital camcorder and I want to make DVDs of the things I've filmed.
The camcorder came with the usual attatchments to put it through the TV, but our DVD player doesn't record.
We have a DVD recorder on the lap top so i thought if I bought a cable which linked the camcorder to lap top- hey presto, I would be able to make my dvds!
Not so.... stupid maz has bought a cable she didn't know anything about!
It arrived today and connects perfectly into the camcorder.
I thought the other end was a USB thingamyjig, but it turns out it is for a pc
'equipped with a capture board having a 6 pin IEEE 1394 terminal'
 WTF is that?!?!
All I know is the bit doesn't fit my computer!
What do I do? Send the part back and get a different one? There doesn't seem to be anything else other than that to connect it to a pc.
Is there another kind of connection i can get to plug the cable into and then say plug into a usb bit?
Will I actually be able to record from the camcorder if I do that, or do i need software etc?
Already spent about 30 quid on said cable getting special delivery as i need to make a dvd asap!
Help!!!
Maz xx
PS free webcam show for the first to tell me how to attatch said camera to lap top!!! lol

They need to puchase a PCI Firewire card from there local computer shop.
there you go
You will need to buy a capture card,
also plenty of software and tech advice here:
A quick google tells me that digital camcorders are connected by a firewire cable which is the one that you have brought - great if you have a firewire connection on your PC, bad if you don't. You might have to go down the line of buying a PCI firewire card but this is going to be more money.
From reading a few forums, it seems that people with JVC cameras have had a nightmare trying to connect them to their PCs via USB, most have failed.
Having said that, I've never tried personally and hope that someone else has and can be of more use.
laptop + camcorder take into maplins! Fixed. happy DVD's...
Simple... If you have a maplins nearby.
No Charges for advice just the cable.

OK, it's quite easy.
The IEEE 1394 is just a techy name for a firewire cable. most PC's are equipped with them, a longish with a triangular end is the 6pin type and a small square with a little locator pip is the 4pin type (there's a third but you won't have this )
Look on your PC or laptop for it, it should have a symbol that looks like a circle with 3 fan shapes off it. you need a cable to go between the two so look what type you have on your camcorder and your pc (4pin to 4pin, 4pin to 6pin or 6pin to 6 pin). If your PC doesn't have a firewire port you need a card, have a you can get the lead too and there a lot cheaper than maplins or PC world.
Once it's installed, simply plug the camera into the pc and it should auto detect it. With windows you can use a simple program built into it called movie maker to make your edits. It's quite simple to capture, edit and make a final movie, just read the help files.
Once you have an edited movie you need to convert it to a format called Mpeg 2, which is just a compressed and encoded video file, there's lots of free software to do this and you can even use something like Nero with the latest versions. You then burn this to your blank disc and off you go.
Feel free to PM me with any questions, I've been doing this for my job for 10 years wink
thanks all!!!
The fire-whatsamit thingamyjig was the thing i needed!
If the first guy in PC world had just told me that, then hey presto, no problemo!
It turns out the fire thing i bought actually comes with the other cable i originally bought- so thanks to mr pc world man telling me that i needed another cable that I didn't, i have wasted 30 quid!
Hopefully i'll be able to send it back and get a refund, but i won't get the special delivery money back mad
thanks all- DVDs ahoy now- i might start up my own porn business, any takers?! lol mxx

If you can't, go to PC World and complain - it's their fault, because you bought it on their advice, surely?

Best advice I can offer is NEVER buy anything from PC world. If you have already done so ... take it back accompanied by a large, very aggressive person and be prepared to threaten them with being boiled in oil and having their bollox ripped off if they don't refund the money. Worked for me :giggle:
Thing is, I bought the one cable online from a different place, when it arrived, i then realised i needed the firefox thing to attatch it to lap top.
That's what I bought from PC world, and thats what already had the cable in it! So if they'd told me in the first place, yes you can attatch camcorder to comp and here's all you need, then I wouldn't have had to buy the other cable!
But then it is my fault for buying something I knew nothing about!
grrrrrrrrrrr
I'll try it though! xx

£30 quid for a firewire lead
Think the most i paid was £15 for a 5 meter gold plated Belkin cable for my studio. send it back and tell it has an intermittent fault, causing dropped frames and you had to go out specially to buy a new one cos it let you down when you needed it wink

I was thinking the same
You could have just got a dvd recorder it would probably have cost you less, well + P&P lol
Just need to know which model of cam and recorder and i'll send you all the details with sortware your need to start your on editing system from home.
If your camcorder has a memory card pull it out stick it in the PCs card reader card reader, no connections and cables to think about.
If not go down to a PC shop, tell them what you have then jump up and down on the sales assistant when it does not work. That is what the High Street is there for.

Memory cards are usually for storing stills when the camcorder is used as a stills camera, unless you're filming in crapy MP4 phone type compression wink
