Woops redface
I got up after forgetting the tray to my computers DVD copier drive was open and i caught the tray.
It won't shut gets stuck about 2 or 3 millimetres before its flush shut, then reopens and stays like 's almost like its come out to far and won't fit back in.
Is there anyone out there who can help,PLEASE!!!!!
I did that to mine last week and walked into the tray. OUCH! it hurt like hell and I think it's gonna leave a scar on my shin rolleyes
Got so mad with it, I just shoved it really hard and it went back into place like magic!
Sorry it's not a more technical answer but that's how I got mine back on lol

Steve~
Are you able to get into the drive? Or is it completely sealed?
Just thinking that it might've skipped a couple of gears on the eject mechanism, and that you could hold the gear in place whilst shoving the tray a few teeth back. Just a thought.

Am i dim,but what is a Pez????
And your getting off the bloody subject,my computers still bolloxed!!!! mad rolleyes lol
Erm........ You might find that you have to shut the puter down, get out the screwdriver thingy and take the DVD drive out.... Then just take all the screws out and have a look at it, see it it has infact as Reese says, just skipped a few gears, and in fact find that is is f**ked...
Oh hang on that was me when the CD Rom drive went in the kids computer..... on second thoughts dont do it Steve, just kick the pigging thing till it goes back in ;)

agree with Reese here, its probably jumped a couple of teeth.,
Damn i!t thats put paid to the free home movie DVD's that clare and steve were going to be giving away to all forum members........................anyone got a spare DVD drive they can lend them sharpish lol
I can't get the DVD drive out,the fecking tower only lets you open one open the other you need special tools, which i don't have, aaaaarrrrgggghhh!!!
I can manage to push one of the cogs up but it still doesnt seem to push back to the proper place to close properly.I'm sure it has just slipped a couple of gears though,so it's not completely shagged.
It may be though if i get any more pissed off with it and fuck it!!!!!

Try my basil faulty advise as yesterday it worked for me on the car...?
Steve,
It probably is, as Reece has already said, a problem with jumping the cogs.
The bad news is that unless you repair it yourself it probably won't be a cost effective repair.
OK getting into the case. Is it a Compaq? You say you need a special tool, are the screw heads star shaped? If they are, you can sometimes get a flatbladed electricians screwdriver to fit. If not, you can pick up a toolkit with a "stardriver" (no Trekie jokes please) for between £8 and £12. (Viking, Neato, Misco, CPC, Maplins and the like)
Once you have the Drive out, unclip the front, carefull remove (usually 4) tiny screws (jewelers screwdivers could be required) and slowly lift the case off. Do not under any circumstances touch the laser if you do, it will be terminally fucked. You should be able to re-align the gears.
If you want a new DVD Writer it will be better to wait a week as NEC have just launched a real cracker, the NEC ND3500A. It will be available next week, hopefully, and burns just about every format at up to 16 speed (DVD+R). Oh, and the price, about £60-ish from or I've just built a 64bit "screamer" and I'm waiting for the NEC to become available to finish it off.
If you're really stuck, PM me.
The computers a Dell one,the DVD drive is an NEC one,not quite as good as the new one but still pretty screws are fairly flat, round and have a small round looking middle bit.
I know that if a can get the drive out it will be a fairly simple job,it's just getting the little twatting thing out mad :x

If you have Allen Keys they may remove the screws. Can you post a picture of the screws? That way I'll be able to give you a definitive answer.
The drive sounds like an NEC ND2500A (or maybe the ND2510A if it can do dual layer) and should be fairly easily repaired.

Right this probably won't help much but its the best i could a link to a picture of the back of a Dell computer, its not very big but hey you never know you might know the type of screws.

The right side on the pic slides off, which is fine, its the left side that has the bloody screws on that i can't get off.
Steve,
Not the best shot but they look like rivets.
Looking inside the case does the assembly that the DVD is in come out? Failing that the DVD may be on "rails" and will slide out from the front. (if so you'll need to take the front off.)
i had of these in for a major spyware/trojan infestation this week , so i can confirm they are rivets. Therefore the special tool u need is a battery drill and an 1/8 inch drillbit. But wouldnt recommend it as a diy repair.
Good luck

If they are rivets then the drive assembly will either come out or the drives will slide out on rails when you remove the front.
Check for screws, clips etc then pull the front from the bottom (not too hard).
Do not take a drill to the rivets.

You're not a "techie" at PC World by any chance are you?
no, they take the less subtle approach , 3ib lump hammer and a chisel.
