Alfred The Great
he was pushed into the marshes of Somerset but never gave up. He inspired his people and returned to set the bases of what would become a united Britain. He set-up defences for the people, Universities to educate, England was the most educated land in Europe for the next two hundred years. He set in place laws and reinterpreted older Roman Law.
Even the Normans who burned the books and planted castles to enslave the people could not destroy everything.
Alfred, defender and scholar he was my hero.
For me, Charles Darwin. A man who eschewed his father's wished to study medicine and actually gained a theology degree at Cambridge, then proceeded to turn the whole creationism idea on it's head. To his credit, he denied his own Christian doctrine and persisted with his search for evidence of the theory of natural selection and the publication of his findings. Most of his hypotheses have since been proved to be correct, and he was one of only 5 non-royal personages to be given a state funeral in the 19th century. He was fortunate that the ideas he expounded were accepted within his lifetime, he must have had quite a battle against the tide to begin with.
Yes but a presenter who has won two yes I say again two Sony radio awards.
Yes he is also on Sun talk and has been nominated for another Sony award recently.
Love him or hate him, I would rather he was running the country.
Yes he did get the sack for I think calling someone from Redbridge council a " health Nazi ". The trouble is Talk Sport wanted Gaunty to be out spoken as his viewing figures were the largest on their radio station, until he had served his the legal case is still ongoing against the radio station.
Now under the Sun newspaper the show has gone from strength to strength to a degree where he has been nominated again.
A hero for me because he is not afraid to express his views in a society now where that is frowned upon, and free speech is being eroded.
I have many other heroes but he is the first one that came into my head.
I have many heroes, or people I admire:
Malcolm X
Medgar Evers - civil rights activist, assassinated in 1963
Mahatma Ghandi
Kate Chopin - an American author who is now seen as an important feminist writer
William Shakespeare
Marlon Riggs - an African American poet, filmmaker and gay rights activist.
Lemn Sissay - playwright, poet and author. Just inspirational.
Prince
Wynton Marsalis - jazz and classical trumpeter and an incredible wordsmith
I could go on. I won't bore you with endless links to biographies etc... but they are all people I hugely admire.

The first mouse to lose his inhibitions and fly a car. not just drive the bad boy, oooh noooo... this dude flew it. Baron Greenback didnt know what hit him.
"Whereever there is trouble he'll be therrrrrrrre!, Danger maouuuuuse!.. DANGER MAOUUUUUUSE!"
Iconoclast is one of my favourite words.....and as the stranglers once said (with different intent) no more heroes
My mum ... for far too many reasons to put into words.
It's taken me a little while to post on this thread as one of my heroes is both revered and hated across the world in equal measure, so there will probably be a similar split on here.
So, my hero is none other than Ernesto "Che" Guevara, revolutionary, guerrilla leader, doctor, author, intellectual, diplomat and to me probably one of the most important and controversial figures of the 20th century.
El Che, was a highly inspirational and controversial figure. He is seen by his followers as a charismatic, decent human being. A brave man who led people not only by using lofty ideals but, by resorting to lead people by example. However, aside from all this El Che was also, just like all of us, a flawed human being. He was stubborn, arrogant and to a certain extend a bit self deluded. Not in his capacity to lead and inspire people but in his passionate and unwavering belief that Socialism would unite all the disadvantaged people's of the world and on his mission to eradicate social injustice.
It was his arrogance and stubbornness that, in my opinion, during his last campaign in Bolivia caused him to antagonise the Bolivian Communist Party (whose support he needed to start another revolution) that left him and his troupe isolated which ultimately resulted in his demise.
As a boy growing up in Latin America I saw El Che as a Hero who stood up against American imperialism and left a lasting legacy to this day.
he made good posters and badges too
