Hi all,
Assuming this really tedious advert is being played all over the country has anyone actually got a clue as to what it's all about??
Is it just about DVD's and the copies available?? I just don't get it.. I understand they are trying to stop people buying dodgy stuff but will that ear cringing whiny song make anyone stop??

I think its trying to imply that if you buy knock off DVD's (rather than buying a dvd writer and downloading them yourself) then your girlfriend will leave you and people will laugh at you and sing songs at you.
Load of bollox if you ask me.
Maybe there is a subliminal message in the ad from Pioneer telling people to go and buy its latest DVD writer and its a clever marketing ploy?? rolleyes
And what's wrong with finding a watch in the street and giving it to your missus? (providing it's a ladies watch of course)

I think that they need to put the truth in these advert's about the reasons why we shouldnt buy these pirate dvd's.
For one, sometimes they are sold by people linked to organised crime.
Two, some of these people also sell child porn mad
Just those two reason's alone should make people stop and think about buying from these people.

I see your point, but i'd say 999 out of 1000 of the people that sell these dvd's is your average Joe, with a decent internet connection, access to newsgroups and a couple of dvd writers burning away in his bedroom.
I dont think the likes of your run of the mill mafia boss or local drug baron see pirate dvd's as a business with a large profit margin.
Also, i completely and whole heartedly disagree with the child porn thing, i've been approached 100's of times by people selling dvd's on the street and in pubs etc, "normal" porn yes, but i've never once seen any child porn dunno

You would be surprised, pirate dvd's are big business in my local area. There have been many raids on local homes which are being used as make shift factory's. With the police seizing hundred's and thousand's of pounds worth of dvd's and equipment. It is also well known for it's link to organised crime in my local and surrounding areas.
Although in other area's this may/probably is, be different.
In Edit: You may disagree with the statement about the child porn as you have not seen it happening, but in my experience, I have, and I know it happens mad

Fair enough if you've seen it, i'll take your word for it.
I'm not saying i condone it as i never buy them, i get my own if i need/want to, just saying where i'm from pirate dvd's etc arent exactly big news.....its the smack dealers and crack houses we need to worry about up here lol
The ad is quite simply trying to stigmatise people who buy them.
As for it's effectiveness dunno
I get the gist of the advert but I think it's a bit harsh if your name is Nigel. Just imagine the endless singing after every gets a bit rowdy down your local pub.
Also, I don't know where 'Nigel' is based, but I've never seen any watches lying around the streets.
So this is a government thing then... I guess!
Like it was said I don't know why they don't just tell the truth.. maybe more effective. Playing stupid jingles just irritates i think..
As for the knock off DVD's themselves and the like if we were not so ripped off in this country to start with I don't think as many would bother buying as they do.. Companies have themselves to blame at times..

Just for once it isn't the government being daft, apparently it's a lobbying group for the entertainment trade:
Trust for Internet Piracy Awareness
That's it- blame the Pirates! We get such a ruddy bad press rolleyes

There's more than just the DVD portion.... basically its any "knock off" in general.
However...
If the film and music industry actually woke up and got their act together then they could snuff out a lot of counterfit dvd's quiet easily.
Do a global release on day one of all the media types from cinima to dvd to ppv and let people decide how they want to watch the latest release.
Also price the DVD's world wide to be closer priced to the US price... I get so pissed off with paying far more in this country for US, and other countries, stuff than just the currency exchange. If a DVD in the us is 10USD then why is it that i'm expected to pay 20GBP for it... surely it should actually cost me 5GBP! But the media companies did a hatchet job with "regions" to artifically adjust local market prices.
What global all media release will never stop however is P2P downloads as "some" of these people will never pay no matter what... and those people don't get "knock off's" as they just dont pay, full stop!
A lot of the black market in films is more to do with getting to see the latest blockbuster when its released in the states and not have to wait X months for it to come over here, or they don't want to go to the cinema but cant be arsed to wait for the DVD release.
