Personally if they find a cure this would be a great thing. Not just for the peace of mind of those in the 1st world, but for the millions being left destitute in the 3rd world... Then again what drug company would want a cure when the treatment is worth so much more in the long term?
OK I am an old cynic... I have heard that prostitutes in certain towns seemed to have developed an immunity to aids, but you hear so much on the news. There is bound to be the odd person who will manage to fight it off out of the millions of infected...
I wouldn't be surprised if he had. With 6 billion people in the world, one of them must be resistant to the virus. I remember a similar story a while back about a group of women in Africa who had an apparent immunity to the illness.
As for making a cure out of it, my medical knowledge is limited, but since it travels via the blood stream and attacks the immune system and the white blood cells, it means that people with different blood types won't be able to.
(BTW, my medical knowledge IS limited, so any or all of the above might not be accurate)
It certainly bears further looking at.
I agree that hospitals get things wrong on a daily basis, but something like this would prompt quite a thorough investigation as the consequences of an incorrect result are so serious. That investigation has happened and concluded that there was no mistake, so either the investigation is also flawed or something else happened.
Even if we work out what happened to the bloke it's still not going to produce a cure for HIV in the near future, but it would be interesting to find out what makes him different from millions of other people.
Immunity is one thing, a cure is something else entirely. It may be that if there's something special about this guy's blood it could help to develop a vaccine, but it's probably not going to be any help to those already infected.
" A group of prostitutes thought to be immune to HIV have now become infected, causing dismay to scientists hoping to develop an Aids vaccine."
Full BBC story here:
There is just so much information and misinformation about HIV/AIDS it's always going to be difficult to be sure.
One thing that is known though is that in parts of Africa a "known" cure among less civilised groups is the of virgins. As virgins become increasingly had to come by because of the practise it is now common in osme areas for babies to be by those infected with the virus.
Medical companies are making billions out of this disease and it's time they were stopped. Maybe changing the laws on licensing so that they only get three years sole use before patent is lost so that gebneric drugs can be developed that much more cheaply.
You have situations in third world countries where giant multi-nationals are doing things like marketing baby formula milk in a way that says it's better then mother's breast milk in places where the only water available is contaminated.
I really hope this guy has deeloped an immunity. Yes we need to stop the spreado f other VDs but what's happening in third world nations is more important at the moment.
On a related note, who herad Liam Donaldson say there would be 50,000 deaths in the UK from bird flu? Did you know there have only been 600 deaths world wide in the last two years? What the hell is that guy on? And he's our Chief Medical Officer!!
what HuxleyandSusie said!
since HIV = an immunodefiency thing, if your immuno things are no longer deficient, you are cured! QED! t'is not the first time i've heard of an HIV cure?
the relationship between HIV and Aids is a little dubious! the two generally go together, but being co-existant does not equal causality!
neil x x x ;)
I think we should be very suspicious of anyone who signs lucrative contracts with the News of the World and the Daily Mail for articles about himself, but refuses (at the time of writing) to submit himself to a medical examination.
This story about him not wanting to help is actually just a big misunderstanding.
His initial decision not to go for further tests was earlier, when everybody assumed that the positive diagnosis must have been wrong, and he'd been mistakenly 'living with AIDS' for years (and therefore contemplating suicide, and not using protection when sleeping with other HIV+ people) when he didn't have it at all. At that point he was considering legal action against the hospital.
As soon as retests on the samples showed that the test were accurate, and he has indeed become 'cured' he dropped the legal action and he has now promised to do whatever he can to help find a cure.
Oh god.. i'm soooo gonna have to jump on this one before things just get messy!!!
Right... there IS a link between HIV and AIDS.. and if you have HIV you WILL get AIDS of some form... just that the time scale varies.
HIV is the virus itself... which very slowly knocks out your immune system.... its a cunning little bugger cos it attacks and resides in the very cells that your body uses to combat viral attacks(T (CD4+)/helper cells) these work by assisting other cells in your body to kill off the infected cells.... ego.. knock the CD4+ cells out.. your immune system is compromised.. therefore leaving it vunerable to infection
... which leads me to AIDS....
as your body becomes more deficient in CD4+ cells you develop a "syndrome" of infections that a "normal" person doesnt get.... things like pneumonia
as someone.. (i think ice man) said.. this is NOT a cure.... nor is it a vaccine.. nor should it be seen as hope to anyone with HIV at present!...... if this guy was infected.. if he is now.... or whether the virus is just dormant in his system.... remains to be seen.... from what i know (this might have changed).. the test for HIV is a blood test where they look for antibodies to the HIV virus.... ahhhh did i hear you say that the HIV virus hides from the body...ooo yes.. you are right (well done for reading)... these antibodies are very very low in concentration.... and i believe that at current thinking.. it takes 3 months for there to be enough antibody in your system for us to detect.
as for the whores being immune... crap
as for the of babies in africa..... yes.. this is true.... its interesting how wives tales get spread around! .... hey.. raises an interesting point.... what would you do... if you were found to have an illness
its like that film... johnny x or whatever..where a dad holds a hospital hostage until they do an op on his kid cos they dont have the right insurance
but an interesting fact... from a film i watched recently....... 1 in 4 people in west africa have HIV....... oh piddle!
so kiddies.... be safe... be happy!
(and get regular blood and swab STI tests!)
When a blood is taken and tested for HIV and tests positive on the screening test it is then retested from the original specimen. If this is also positive further confirmatory tests are preformed.
If all tests are positive a repeat sample is then requested from the patient to make sure there has not been a mix up with the original sample.
