I understand that holidays abroad are mainly to allow us to return to our Soveriegn Nation... to realise what we have been foolish to leave... even for such a short period... stands tall... hand on heart... Gawd save us!
dunno really... never tried it myself either

I used to get stuck with organising it, packing and unpacking both ends... carrying the passports etc.. and I had to go where he wanted...
I much prefer staying in England...
On the other paw, it can be an experience, I have had a couple of brilliant holidays in Tunisia, it honestly depends on where you stay... the internet is a good place to get ideas on what you want..
I wish you the best and hope you have a great time!
I don't do beach holidays. When I go away I go and see a place. City breaks, that kinda thing. See new places, eat new things, take great photos, maybe do a little shopping, sit and observe and drink a place in, learn from it, take in places of interest, sights with historic, social or cultural importance... but most of all I just enjoy the newness, the difference, the being away from home and the experience. But then I am a firm believer in the concept that travel broadens the mind!
Now, if only I had the cash to go away this year... wink
I'm guessing they'll be eating egg and chips every night too?
If not, then that's something to look forward to. I love eating new stuff in other countries!
We go abroad probably 3 out of every 4 years mainly for my hubby and daughter as they are quite happy to spend 6 hrs a day in and out of the pool or sea. I on the other hand take 3 or 4 good books and just sit back and relax with the odd dip in the pool to cool down every hour or so, then a leisurely stroll round the shops for a little retail therapy.
In the evening we have a good meal and a stroll around a couple of drinks and then time for bed.
As for costing loads you can get some really good deals if you shop around sometimes cheaper than in this country. We have just had a week in a caravan in Weymouth cost £600 for van(booked 8 months ago got £250 OFF) diesel cost £80 and then food on top of day after we came back hubby looked for a holiday for the same time next year abroad found a hotel in resort we like 3star h/board for £400 so looks like that is the option for next year.
After all is said and done ony you can decide wether to go or not but you may find you enjoy it.

one thing I dont like about holidays.... tourists... and I dont want to be one.
I'd like to book Ankor Wat (sp?) for a fortnight... all to myself.

I hate the "egg & chips" holiday concept with a passion. We've always spent holidays touring around Europe, seeing & doing new things.
I never liked the thought of going on a sun, sea & sand trip......until last year. We went to a little heard of Greek Island where the scenery, people, and food were simply unsurpassable.
Ten days split between off roading in the jeeps we hired, swimming, eating the most amazing food, and completely unwinding.
We hand picked the apartments, so we could spend evenings at the bar after getting back from our evening meal whilst still being within talking distance (and full view) of the kids. I've never felt so chilled. cool
LP- Need any crew?

But sadly hugely over populated by tourists. Apparantly though, there are other even more dramatic locations in Peru......one day, I'm hoping to get my neighbours to give me a guided tour wink
The last holiday I had was probably one of the best.
I didn't go on a package tour, I didn't go on a chartered flight and I didn't stay in a hotel.
I spent a month living with a friend from Northern California whom I met on the Internet. Basically I lived like a resident and it was brill.
No tourist spots, no bullshit tours. I saw the country as the country's residents saw it... apart from perhaps the day in the house and pool of my friend's friend who happened to be a multi-millionaire.
I still reckon that if you go abroad then you should eat the local food, you live by the local customs and you do as they do.
I cannot see the point in taking your own country's customs and food with you after spending a fortune to go abroad. Why not just stay at home if that's what you want?
Oh the bliss of no longer having to take the missus and kids on a package tour (cattle train?).
I think it depends where you go and why your going to that particular place... I've been lucky and been to some great places and not done the tourist thing. Had some fantastic experiences, met some great people. Want to do Cambodia, Peru, Vietnam and perhaps some out of the way places of Thailand is on my list...oh and India again!!
I like to do research of where I want to go and make my travel/accommodation arrangements around that. Leaving things flexible as possible for things that crop up...
I went on my own last time and although I made some friends and met up with others that I knew on-line only (met a member from here - he recognised my butt in the middle of a crowded street :shocksmile, it is nice to do it with company that you get on with....
Peanut, that's the best holiday you can have I reckon, I've done it a few times now. A friend and I stayed with a missionary's wife in Portugal and it was brill... also did some house sitting for people in Australia whilst they came to the uk on holiday. You see life so differently living as a resident.
Id love to travel more although as far as me and the other fuckwit get lately is France! (nothing wrong with france but i'd like to see more of the world lol ) We love touring the UK though and both love the highlands of scotland, skye and hopefully will travel further west in the near future.
Dek does alot of travelling/seeing other countries with his work and decided France is his favourite country
I can see your point about not wanting to go abroad, just for the sun, relaxed lazy atmosphere, different foods to try. Wines that you never see in UK no cctv cameras following you every where. :haha:
Its all about personal choice and if you feel happy in the UK then great, personally i love to travel and if im honest probable seen more overseas than i have of UK.
I'm hopefully going to Ibiza in August for my birthday and yes there will be a bit of drinking but there is a fantastic nudist beach over there which you would be hard pushed to find as chilled as over here.
My mother also lives in Spain and things are a bit funny over there at the moment, pm me if you need any advice.
The thing with travel is that it is as personal a choice to you as the way you live your life in alot of respects. Whilst at home living your day to day life if you are lucky you have probably chosen where you live, how you have decorated it, where you go for days out, what you eat etc etc etc. Why should your one or two week (or more) holiday be any different. If you live in peace and quiet in nice surroundings and are healthily curious about your surroundings, the chances are you will want your holiday to have lots to see and be good quality accommodation and interesting food etc. If you love being a night owl and are a party animal then obviously uninterrupted partying at night and a bed or beach in the day time to recover on will be perfect.
I have done the holidays in the UK and loved some of them and also the holidays abroad and loved some of them. The only ones I didnt enjoy were the ones that I did to suit someone elses requirements rather than my own. wink
What I'm trying to say is don't base your choice about whether you go abroad or not on other peoples experiences as sometimes people do the same as I did when I was on holidays I wasn't keen on and try to satisfy the needs of one member of the party and then wonder why no one else is happy and it ends up being crap.

i just dson't get why people want to spend a small fortune to get drunk every night and then spend all day in bed!

A holiday is a rare commodity and if you're going to be put in the position of wasting time on stuff that either doesn't interest you or makes you feel unhappy, then don't go.
If you feel obliged to go, them make sure you plan to do something you like, instead of just going with the crowd all the time.

why do you go abroad and what do you get out of it?
whips

We don't do packages and because we like to get away several times a year we go very budget on our main holiday, which is a caravan hol in Spain. We drive there and don't see a bar or cafe from one end of the holiday to the next. If we could avoid all human contact we would.
We spend our time walking or just lazing around, chilling but never, ever just wasting time getting over a hangover.
Other breaks are for seeing places we've always wanted to, city breaks and more recently holidays getting to know my mother land a bit better ( Scotlandshire - according to Harry! )
For us travel is to see/do something not possible at home. Simple, like me.
If in your heart you dont want to go then its doubtfull you will enjoy yourself...
I have no real interest in lounging by the pool for a week or a fortnight and much prefer to go out every day and explore...
Pretty much what we have just done for a week in Bude....
Did 1000 miles in a week including travelling round and seeing the sights...
