When I was at school, one gem was along the lines of" It takes a bloke x hours to dig a hole (Z by W by V) , he hits a water pipe and the flow from the pipe is at a rate of Y gallons per min, so how long before he drowns ?" Well the bleedin obvious thing to do is turn off the water !!! No wonder our kids grow up dumb!

agreed and I have considered that in my workings out thus far, however he would reach a critical point where he is so far down that he cant throw the dirt out and thats why it would be usefull if I knew if he can swim. I appreciate that he may well be able to start digging sideways and then upwards, throwing the dirt behind him into the old hole until he reappears a few metres away from the hole that is filling with water, but for the sake of simplicity, I would like to leave that possibility out of the equation.
