How can we encourage people to post?

Powers you do not know how far away from the truth your comment is. Yes it is true me and Peanut have not got on, but he shoots from the hip like I do, and at least he says exactly what he means. Whislt I do not agree with him most of the time, I know exactly where I stand with him. He served his ban and for me that is the end of it....period.
You have done your fair share of sniping and slagging off yourself, so maybe kettle black can be used for many people and not just me. I could make a list as long as my arm for people who have done that over recent months. So on that basis I think your comments were unfair.
No wonder people do not want to post, do we really have to have a thread asking why?

I know you started this thread with the best intentions Minxy, but I think it is pretty self explanatory from the way the thread has gone why old and new forumites don't post!
From a newbies point of view you can get a bit paranoid that hostile forces are at play and anything you may say will be shot down and your opinions held against you(IMO).the bickering is draining and some good and valid points in arguements/debates have not been noted! Each to their own opinion but have respect for others.
Most of us are here for fun and hopefully adult humour and conversation, but I'm still trying to find that thread. lol

fucking right i have done my fair share of sniping...but i know when to walk away and let it go!
you complain of the forums not being a nice place to post in any more...but your not prepared to put your hand up and say..."perhaps i might have contributed towards that"...rather that blaming anyone else but yourself!

Yup same here. I always hated the whinging "It isn't like it used to be posts" and when I started feeling like I'd run out of steam/interest/positivity it was time to leave. Sadly, I think too many posters use forums to vent their anger/shoulder chips or general shortcomings on other people and then there's the Queen Bees who want everything revolving around them because the forum 'belongs' to them. It's the beast of online forums, whatever their subjects.
However, I believe that this hostility and negativity often puts new posters off.
It's a fascinating thesis on human psychology.

its not always what you say but what you dont say.
for encouraging people to post i think its just up to them. some people will sit and watch and be happy doing that. they may be all talked out at work and just fancy a read.
same as in the chat rooms, i find it more odd in there at times as after all its a chat room, but no one chats lol
people come people go, threads/thoughts will be repeated and people will fall out, and people will find friends much like a pub or club, you can only try and make it sometimes fluffy so new people walk in through the doors.
banging out threads for the sake of it doesnt mean people will contribute more, they will just find it boring unless there is substance in the thread.
that doesnt mean people cant bang out threads, just dont expect replys.
some people may well post from the hip and keep at a point, sometimes only cuse the origional point was mistrude and they are now trying to explain themselves
some people will walk n with unhelpfull snipes and watch it blow up.
dont mean one type is to blame more than the other.
its the content of the words not the quantity of them
forums are tended to be places where longer replys happen imo not a thread based chat room. maybe the upset comes from those who want fast fluffy chat opposed to people getting into detailed debate?
chat suits chaters, forums suit slower debaters and the ads suit well people looking for and placing adds... why feel the need to pull people from chat to forum and forum into chat? i dont see us all hitting the ad section and sending out pms saying hey come join the forum??
just my thoughts,,, not the law.

I've said it before and I'll say it again (not that anyone listens lol

) but sometimes we all need to remember there are actual people behind the username/avatar.
I've said things in the past that have upset people (not on purpose) and vice versa because you kinda forget that people have feelings and emotions and they're real....not just some opinion, view or computer.
Sounds a bit stupid but if everyone remembered that people have feelings and everyone's views are valid (even if you don't hold that particular viewpoint) then the whole world would be a better place IMO!

I think it would be nice to have a perpetual joke thread. One that would contain nothing but jokes one after the other. It could be an openly flippant thread. If anyone wanted to take issue with a joke posted, they could PM the poster or open it in a more "serious" new topic.
I'm sure it would be an antidote to some of the bad feeling that goes on here sometimes.

Yes, I do take your point Frecklebird. I think you're right. Perhaps more people should share their jokes with us even if it means a new thread and one which would be locked straight away.
My own dreadful offering last week was offered as a light hearted foil to the "heavy" posts that seemed to be happening.
It would be nice to see more jokes on the forum though.

the reason that joke threads get locked is that, although they may 'lighten the mood' they don't really add value to the forums. If you specifically wanted to read a joke and googled it, you get
"Results 1 - 10 of about 84,900,000 for jokes"
Surely you don't want to see the Cafe full of jokes when there are so many other sites out there you could visit and chuckle away to your hearts content? the joke invariably is mainly to the taste of the poster and more often than not, it's been heard/seen before. Even if they weren't locked, what comment could anyone make to turn it into an interesting thought provoking thread?
The funniest threads, in my opinion, are those which are 'real life' (or slightly embellished!)comedic moments. the ones that can garner a reply.
I'm a member on another site which allows jokes and it just drives you to distraction seeing post after post of crappy jokes when it is not the reason I joined it!!
