oven bottoms
tea cakes ,

Bin lid is a huge version of a muffin. Also known as a frisbee round here. To give you an idea of the size, they can fit a full breakfast on them without it turning into a mountain of food. Approximately the same size as a dinner plate

Yeah it's like a giant barm - hence the name - and some greedy people get a whole breakfast on it. That sounds good , i`ll have to look out for em ! . I`m in south mcr and never heared of them :?
davej who is still none the wiser..............can someone describe a barm cake to me cos at the moment I've got it down to, a cross between a muffin and a bread roll, am I right or is it something else.

round and flat-ish , bout 2 inches thick , any the wiser ? biggrin
Loads of different names for them but a game just for fun would be to see how many you could get in a sentence such as
" I went for a Roll she had her Baps and I had my Oven Bottoms we eventually went Sub with my Crusty on top and her soft Milk Roll on the bottom."
There you go for a start
Its a sad life but it's all mine
PS can you still get Blackpool Rolls.

Well... I reckon bread rolls are small and very round. Nice with jam. But barm cakes are larger, more doughy, flatter. Less nice with jam, but good with chips or cheese (though not cheese and chips together, that's gross). Barm cakes are not bread rolls. Size really does matter - but they taste a bit different too confused
When I lived in Doncaster for 2 years, they'd never heard of barm cakes, instead what I called barm cakes, they called muffins. But muffins are not barm cakes. Muffins are nice toasted, barm cakes are not.
Barm cakes are also not tea cakes. Some tea cakes are mildly spicy, or more like buns. Although they are not buns. Tea cakes are nice toasted with lots of butter. Barms cakes are not good toasted. Oops, said that once.
Hope this clarifies the Northern position on bread products wink
PS can you still get Blackpool Rolls.

Maybe try 'phoning Euphoria, they might know.
Blue, cheese sarnies with chips on mmmmmmmm.
Grilled cheese with vinegar anyone?

and to be honest I thought it was a damn good explanation however, it may not have helped my understanding at the time as I was eating a Baguette, given that the baguette has yet to be mentioned I temporarily panicked as I was concerned that I was eating something that was not classified.
.....davej who has thrown the crumpets he was going to have for tea in the bin just in case...........
We could all just settle on a nice medium sliced Kingsmill or Hovis lol
Save a lot of confusion confused

Ah, well, baguettes are imposers. In my day, it was French sticks or nothing
Crumpets... well, what can I say about crumpets.... not proper bread for a start confused . In Doncaster, where they call barm cakes muffins, they call muffins crumpets  . But crumpets have their name on the packet, they can be nothing else. But like muffins (though they are not) they are good toasted with lots of butter.
Muffins have their name on the packet. Well they do in Morrisons and Asda. Is that to make it easier for those of us who don't know the difference between our yeast/dough/bread products? And where exactly do scotch pancakes fit in here? They are like crumpets but thinner. confused
