How Private are sites with a PM system?

This has flittered in anod out of my small fluff filled brain for a while now, but Ive finally remembered to post it.
How Private do you think sites that use a PM (private messaging) system are?
Not having a clue about anything techy, I wouldnt know if admins/mods/powers that be have any access to PM's that have been sent between 2 members.
I know on the rep site I run, I dont have access to any PMS, but wondered on bigger sites if this happened.
NOT specifically this one....im NOT suggesting that for one minute, but its something thats recently been discussed on another forum Im a member of, and I thought I would throw it open on here.....
how do others feel about privacy of PM's.....we all know that there is oodles of info on protecting identity, PIN numbers, passwords in general etc, but wondered if people put the same thoughts into private messaging services on forums and sites they are members of.
Just some sunday ruminations to ponder
I don't consider any communication via the internet to be totally private. With a Court Order, the police and 'security services' can access any and all data we have posted. The only limit is whether the information is still stored.
Within sites, in order to satisfy the point above, someone in the administrative level must also have access to any and all data posted and stored. That may be split between mulitple people. As to whether they would - that is down to the rules of the site/company involved.
As I understand it (vague memory so may be wrong) any mail, pms and other data is not private AT ALL if it is within the IT systems of the company you work for - whether it was intended to be private or not. But they still need legal permission and access permissions to access it. And the number of people who have that is limited. To protect the company - not the poster.
In summary - it's no more private than the Royal Mail - and a darned sight easier to get at.
Safest thing is to work on that basis. biggrin
Poorly set-up sites will be less protected - and may not really be protected at all.
If you want to check - Google whatever username you are using on a site and see if it chucks up your 'private' messages. You may be horrified by what you find from some sites.
As a Mod on here, I can say that we do not have access to PMs at all.
I'm not sure what Admin can and can't access for security/safety purposes.
Nola x
Apart from my own, I don't have access to any ones pm's and nor would I want it.
Mind you I've not had many recently!
Admin to my knowledge to not have access either.
filth, pure filth ladies!
but I'm sorry, I just can't stop reading your mail.
lp
I have for some time assumed that Admin can and do look at pms, because of an interraction between me and another member, which Admin seemed to be aware of, without me telling them.
I might be completely incorrect in this. Might be coincidence. It hasn't changed anything about what I write in pms.

i dont think its a case of if admin could read pms or not.. i know for a fact on other sites this can be done .. had it proven to me by an admin on a forum like this , usinf a simple hack, that it can by telling me the content of a pm i sent myself... i reckon its more a case of who the fuck would want to plough through a million bits of bollox a week to find something a little bit 'juicy' ..im damn sure admin have better things to do.
LOL...maybe they have key words flagged that alert them....kinda like the secret services when they are looking for terrorists and stuff like that cool

lol you know me too well.
For the record it is possible for certain admins to access certain pm's if there is a real need to do this, for example if there was a need to verify that an abusive pm had been sent, or to confirm that someone accused of spamming has actually been spamming before taking further action.
As individuals and as a company we don't snoop or monitor pm's and we certainly have no desire to do either. There's no alert systems built that notify us when certain words are used in pm's, private messages should remain private between the people involved.
I love Marmite.

way to go st3v3 .. a refreshingly honest response to a thread that has cropped up so many times on various sites over the yeaRS youd think people would of known the answer by now.. FIRST TIME IVE SEEN A PUBLIC HONEST ANSWER FROM AN ADMIN.. and for that i feel i can trust you guys more than before..

I couldn't have worded it better myself.
Every word you type and transmit via the t'interweb has the possibility of being decoded by an individual, whether it be a site admin or a hacker.
As to them being bothered .... well that's been answered.
