Hypochondria ...?

As some of you are aware, I haven't been feeling too good lately and I just put it down to a heavy cold.
It was just a runny nose and the sneezes, then quickly developed into a very irritating and persistent, dry, tickly cough. In fact, I haven't stopped coughing for two days, solid!
My breathing is wheezy, my chest is tight and very painful when I cough. Coughing also makes the veins in my temples feel like they're about to explode. i can't laugh without coughing and I can't talk without gasping for breath.
I feel dreadful
I'm not here for sympathy - I got plenty of that in the chatroom earlier today - i'm here 'cos i want your honest opinion.
Do you think I should go to the doctor's and get checked for a chest infection OR am I just a hypochondriac and i should take some Buttercup Syrup and get on with it??
The truth is I'm a wuss! I don't want to go to the doc's in case they say there's nowt wrong and I feel like an eejit, but then, if it is an infection, surely it needs to be treated sooner rather than later?
Any doctors or nurses out there? Anyone as pathetic as me??
Lots of people apparently think going to the doctor with something non life threatening is a waste of the doctor's time. I don't agree. The doctor's time is far better spent doing "minor repairs" to general wear and tear, rather than only seeing those with one foot in the grave who could have been helped more easily if only they'd gone sooner. Anyway, the doctor is the one who decides how serious it is, that's their job. So what if it's "only" a cold or flu? Your doctor can tell you how best to cope with it, and would much rather do that than see you next week when it's developed into pneumonia. If you're ill and you don't know what it is, seeing your doctor doesn't make you a hypochondriac, it makes you a more responsible user of the NHS's resources than some martyr who waits until they're at death's door and can't be fixed up so easily.
And if you are a hypochondriac, that doesn't mean you can't ever be really ill.
I'm not saying run to the doc for every little sniffle, but if you feel really crap and you're worried about it, then let the expert tell you what to do about it.
GWS kiss
You just think yourself lucky, Lady that you don't have "MAN-FLU" Now there's a REAL ILLNESS ! ! ! !
Seriously though. Marya - take yourself off to the docs.
I love giving advice. But I do it on the understanding that it is up to the one being advised as to what they do with the advice.
However - on this occasion, I really hope you take it and act upon it.
Thanks guyskiss
I really don't want the doctor to think I'm a time-waster but i am genuinely concerned.
Mid-afternoon today I was at the choking-on-my-tonsils stage but at approximately this very evening I made a violent leap into coughing-so-hard-I'm-throwing-up territory.
Maybe some of you think I'm making a fuss over nothing, but as I told someone else earlier on; I haven't got time to be ill! I'm a single parent and a full-time student - I need to function!
Anyway, I've rung the doctor's and the receptionist said to call back after for an 'emergency' appointment - whatever that is. Bit of a contradiction really - they call sitting in the waiting room for nearly 2 hours an 'emergency'. Good job I'm not on death's door, innit?!
well from the sound of you, i think it would be best to get it checked out, you'll be sounding like dot cotton if ya leave it!!
and youve got too much of a sexy voice to go let that happening!!

Go to the doctors. NOW woman.
Don't worry about feeling daft, see a nurse if you don't want to bother the doctor but you must get checked out.
Better to be safe than sorry.

That's am btw, so only another 12 hours of annoying myself and the neighbours!
I felt a bit 'out of body' earlier too. You know when you don't feel like you're here? No? Anyone?
Enough of my whinging, I'm off t'chatroom for a cheer-up!
Couldn't cope with the chatroom.
Poor Jon is ill too, bless. But of course, being a bloke, he has flu, obviously!!!
More symptoms - my voice is going and my throat is slowly closing up. A blessing you might say, but it won't stop me typing! lol
Have come to the conclusion that I'm just a miserable b*stard!
Marya,
Seriously, if you feel wheezy and breathless, just take yourself down the docs and have done with it! (and ignore the bloke - it's a clinical fact that men either do the total macho bollox or are complete wusses rolleyes ).
Dr G wink
xx
Marya,
Speaking as one of the majority who would like to do something with your pillows........... NO, HungryP make this a sensible post. evil
OK. For the past few years I have always delayed going to see my GP when I get a chesty cough, yet he always ends up giving me some antibiotics.. However I need to get out of this habit, because when I get a cough........ the whole bloody world begins to suffer due to the noise I make (& this includes my neighbours last month !!!).
So do as I will be doing in the future.............. GET TO THE GP.
Get to the docs first thing marya.
You are saying you don't have time to be ill but if you leave it you will most certainly end up really ill and having to take longer to recover and have time of studying etc.
I have a bit of a tickle too btw wink

Loads of nasty colds around at moment, and antibiotics don't help them, but you sound like a chest infection so you done the right thing going to the docs. If it serious enough to concern you get yourself there and get it checked smile
As for emergency appointments, they all seem to be that, I tried to book a 'normal' one, wait 3 to 4 weeks, oh sorry our system doesn't go that far, call back in a week and try to get in then... Grr...

* * * UPDATE * * *
I won't give you all the gory details but suffice to say, I did drag myself to the doctors - yes, and waited a full 20 minutes beyond my appointment time. The top and tail of it is I do have a chest infection and I've got 500mg Amoxycillin to take - one 3 times a day.
I'm actually happy that I am genuinely ill and not just pathetic .. oh, ok, so I might be a BIT pathetic but I'm allowed to be - I'm ill!!
Big thanks to everyone that offered their advice here and by PM - much, much appreciated. I take a great deal of comfort knowing that someone somewhere cares, even only a little bit. kiss
As for the 18% of you that that think I'm over-reacting to a bad cold or that I really do have an obsession with phantom illness; just you wait! When the antibiotics have kicked in, I'll be bouncing back to give you some of this smackbottom :kick: poke
its just great to she your got ya avatar back... was startig to miss it!!
