I'm probably going to end up at the receiving end of someone's vitriolic reponse to this comment but I have to ask why some members of SH send someone a PM and then contribute to a thread by informing the recipient of the PM publicly that they've been PM'd...
It confuses the hell out of me as presumably you PM them 'cos your communication is exactly that... PRIVATE! rolleyes
Not having a go... as I could be missing something obvious here...
smile
I've PM'd you my response lol
Its easy to miss that you have a pm, so it makes sense to tell someone here that your sending a pm!!

Have questioned it myself before now. dunno Surely they have more chance of seeing a PM than they do the message telling them about it confused

Absolutely. I have a theory that it is aimed more at the people who have not received the PM, who are therefore denied the obvious pearl contained within it. A sort of flipa
The first thing I look at when I log on is the PM counter - warms me heart when there are some and pisses me off when there are none. I can't see anyone missing it.

rotflmao that is sooo not true!
some browsers stop the new pm window popping up, so it's not till you do a refresh and actually look at the counter that you notice.
i'm in the habit of checking, but it's easy to miss. specially if you have a dozen threads open at once and only refresh the index later on.

Dozen threads open at once??! This is behaviour on SH with which I am not familiar!!
PM window?? - I don't think I brought mine with me. (I've got a little icon in the top right hand corner, which says you've got ** PMs - whenever I go back to the forum or a new thread it refreshes. I am obviously using my extensive skills in technophobe here (mind you I never miss a PM!!! Ha!)

I love to get a pm, coz it doesn't happen often sad . However the other reason for doing this is that if the thread is of a personal nature, people may want to respond more privately, so they may post the "I've sent a pm" message, just to let others know that they have made the effort.
it's useful to prevent a hijack, when someone asks something that warrants an answer but if off topic... mentioning it in the thread means the rest of us can carry on the conversation without sidetracking

there you go! quod erat demonstrandum eh?
i had a pm just sitting there for an entire 15 minutes, and had i not clicked into this thread it could have been sat there for several minutes more!
and tune? you wondering now what it contained? are you? well not telling, so there! flipa :flipa: :flipa: :P :P :P

can we sticky this thread to alert daft people........ mentions no names...... *coughs....er...neil...hem *..... to when they have PMs in their box? dunno
I have one of those pop-upbox thingies but it only pops up when i refresh the page or click to another part of the site. I used to log into msnm which allerted me when I had a new PM in my inbox......... alas..... I mananged to block all notices from SH to my account and don't know how to unblock them now! lol
I often come to the site as a guest without logging on as me so if someone has said in a post they have sent me a pm then that would make me log in. Just a thought?
It is easy to miss a PM true - so it can be helpful to be told..sometimes I think its said as a kind of act of solidarity to someone who is troubled,or as a lighthearted flirtational signal,or a heavyhearted attempt to get HER/HIM to LOOK at it PLEASE or at times a bit of a boast - eg WE now share a secret but we want all of YOU to know we do..so many meanings therein, just as the coded things on the all do that one surely?
Lemon Meringue Pie.
Tzickylickylickylickylicky.
Shredded Wheat.
London Eye.
We in fact do share secrets - I know things ,you know things - we need lots of trust on here - LOTS - trust me! wink
I often miss the PM window too rolleyes , and I think it's quite polite to say you've PMed someone if the reply warrants it. If I'm running a thread, such as a meet up or a party thread I tell people that I've PMed them out of politeness and so that the thread doesn't go off topic. However, I can see that in some situations it doesn't need to be said so could look a bit irrelevant.

Perhaps you could e-mail Mr Cough to let him know when he has a PM? wink
lhk
lol :laughabove:
All said in jest!
Appart from in a party thread I put up, I think I have only told someone seriously that they have a PM in their inbox a couple of times. I don't count this thread because it's all said tongue in cheek.
I'm very tired so if I don't make sense, do send me an email about getting a PM to let me know my post needs editing! biggrin
does anyone know how to unblock addresses from the msnm block list BTW? That I am still stuck with!

Go to Tools - Options - Privacy and you're there.
From there you can also hit the view button to see who's added or deleted you biggrin

Well I think you ought to - just to be sure - otherwise I might think that you only want to send me one.
Incidentally - I have just received a PM telling me that the sender has posted on a thread that I posted on lol   inverted perversity or what!!!
Does anyone remember those rappers PM Dawn - Set adrift on memory bliss - nice record - and a band who weren't afraid to promote the noble concept of the PM!
