So theres a difference between a driver and a racer then?
Dawn :silly:
This thread was meant to be sort of non rhetorical
However now the can of worms is open... rolleyes
Paul couldnt agree more with that sentiment ..I would add Alesi and both Villeneuves to that racers list
Dawn drivers are good at going fast but not so good at overtaking or scrapping for position...Racers are the ones that get stuck in and exite the crowds lol
( but me thinks you knew that already )

Sorry Dawn redface
Me feckin dumb petrolhead
( sad isnt it ex race and rally driver.. motorsport mad..no licence  )
My vote for the most gifted racer of all time goes to Valentino Rossi.....
If you don't who he is, then the motorsport you're watching has twice as many wheels as the most exciting racing there is wink
Rossi is the best ever :!:
but Gibernau is having a good year

I agree with you about "The Doctor" Lucifer, but we mustn't forget "King" Carl.... Goes into dribbling mode as she thinks about the fact that he will be racing his FP1 up the hill at Goodwood this weekend....
F1.... For me it has to be Jenson, he has got to be one of the best young talents around.... He is definately one to watch along with Sato as BAR are really getting their act together at the minute... (Inside information  )
Touring Cars it has to be Matt Neil, bloody lovely guy and very talented.... WRC, my fave is Colin McRae, fantastic to watch even if he does crash it as many times as he wins...
Our passion though has to be Hillclimbing..... It's grassroots motorsport, lots of ordinary people who have a passion for racing.... To watch either Adam Fleetwood (Current British Hillclimb champion) or Graeme Wight Jnr approach bottom "S" at Shelsley Walsh at speeds of around 130 mph and then cross the finish line at over 140 mph is just the most exciting kind of motorsport around for us.... Oh and to put those speeds into perspective for those that dont know Shelsley Walsh, it's a 1:4 hill which is 1000 yards in length and on average 15ft wide with a serious S bend in it....
I could go on and on about this subject as we eat, sleep and breathe it in this house, but I wont.... Can hear the sighs of relief from the SH members

To return to the theme I wonder how Jim Clark would have fared nowadays

I fear rather badly, but then F1 has developed into something completely unrecognisable from the days when Jim raced.... The aerodynamics, the safety, the design & the driver fitness are all something that have been developed over the last 40 years or so making F1 now a "relatively" safe form of motor sport.... I know that most people reading this will disagree with me on this point but it is true.... You only have to watch the crash that Ralf had on Sunday to appreciate this. If that had happened years ago it would have been a definate fatality.....
Having said all that, can you imagine the F1 drivers of today having to race to their car instead of being on the grid??..... All dressed up in a suit and tie??.... lol
For those of you that dont know, Steve has progressed from being a Marshal (The men in orange suits) to a qualified Rescue member, and is specifically trained in racing incident extraction and medical (non-invasive) care..... He often says he would have nightmares if he was involved in the days when the viewing public were no more than a grass verge away from the racing and when the drivers were often seen smoking a ciggie in thier cars....
The circuits have also altered dramatically, and there is far more emphisis on technical driving rather than just speed...
It's a question that has been asked many times within the racing fraternity and will never be answered to be honest as each and everyone has a different opinion on who is good and who isn't.
This will always remain an interesting and much talked about subject....

Lucifer, I understand your comments about Rossi being the best Racer on 2 wheels, but what about Barry Sheene.....Would you put hem above or below the 'Doctor'?
Interesting question re Sheene and Rossi. It's a shame we'll never see them race because that would have been special.
Sheene faced an entirely different set of challenges to Rossi. Till he arrived on the scene, bike racing was the preserve of the wealthy. He was a cheeky working class boy who grabbed it by the scruff of the neck and changed racing both on and off the track forever, and he was a hero.
He rode evil-handling 500cc two-strokes with a powerband as wide as a fag paper and inadequate brakes. He had some horrendous crashes and, on at least one occasion, hobbled to his bike on crutches and rode injured. He was a racer, he was willing to take it closer to the edge than his rivals and he had that drive to win that all champions have.
I don't think I've ever seen Rossi crash in a race, though. He was on the podium for every race of last season, despite some horrendous qualifying results, awful starts and on 1 occasion getting a 10 sec stop and go penalty and racing through the pack for the second time. At the start of this season, he moved to Yamaha, took a bike that achieved very little last year and won first time out.
But the the bikes are completely different now. Today's roadbikes outperform the GP bikes Sheene rode, and riding techniques for extracting the available performance have changed. But I bet if Barry was racing now, he and Rossi would give us a real show.
Shameless plug for bike racing - Warwick is right, Gibernau is having a great season and is 5 points ahead of Rossi. Assen GP this weekend. It will be good.
I'll stop waffling now ....
