Think very carefully before getting a husky. They aren't like other dogs as they require *HUGE* amounts of exercise to stay fit. Like a minimum of 1 hour of running (not walking - running) per day. That's a pretty serious commitment in my opinion, so be sure you're ready for it.
Remember huskys were initially bred to pull sleds through the snow, and even todays domesticated ones still have that propensity towards needing exercise to be happy.

Indeed the husky is the best option in extreme artic conditions and takes a lot of looking after as a pet.....but the good thing is if things ever get too tough y'can allways eat the dog !
My old g/f recommeded a boxer. They're quite easy to train and and can go for hours on end after about two years old. Also they d wink on't get too jealous or posessive.
odd couple
my brother has a boxer although ive never seen it (he lives in spain-lucky bugger)
personally i think they are abit..............ugly!!
i like rotwielers but they are abit too vicious i think, not good around a 6 year old
as for the artic conditions hey we are in england!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Bailiffs - give yourself a break. If you've already got one dog and you worried about another one getting on with kids, I'd say you've got enough to deal with already. Not wanting to sound like a bossy, know-it-all (honest smile ) but no dogs are vicious unless they are untrained and/or absused. I had a rottie (and he was a huge, scary looking animal) for 5 years before having a baby. Was apprenhensive at how the dog would react, bringing a baby into the home but he was fab. Bottom line is that ALL dogs are only as well behaved in direct relation to the time, effort, training and care the owner puts in.
bevntony.....sorry......its just u her stories dont u ....,.....the child isnt mine but my partners we have him @weekends, my other dog is loving and very well trained !!!!!!!!!he well looked after and loves doing triks beg, roll over ....but they do wreckon(so ive heard) that jackrussells are the most intelligent dogs!!!!!!
well thats a mater of oppinion

no apologies necessary - think it's great you're aware of the risks with any dog... As for Jack Russells, Mum's got one - great company for her - a complete lunatic when anyone visits - I swear that little thing has some springbok type gene in him - can clear 6ft straight into the air - mad hatter... smile
Bailiff,
Firstly do what my wife always does to me when she wants something... Get your partner really into sex and before he's ready to pop, ask him if you can have your dog then... I find I agree to anything
Now I know a little about dogs as we always had a minimum of 4 to 6 at a time when I was growing up... Actually animals in general and their behaviour is one of my main interests.
Now you say Husky but there are two main breeds the Siberian and the Alaskan Malamute
I'll give you some info on the breeds at first.
Breed-
Both of the breeds are strong compact working dogs, so will need at the very least 1 hours walking a day, though ideally 1hour in the morning and 1 in the evening. Try not to take either breed out during midday especially in summer as they tend to over heat, because of their think winter coats. They do need a large yard or garden for day time excersise however, with shade and water readily available. Its also advisable to bury wire at the base of any fencing to prevent them from digging under (But you'll know this from having a Jack Russell)
Siberians usually have a white face mask and underbelly, with the rest of the coat any colour. Malamutes always have White faces and underbelly, but the coat may be light gray or black, gold, red or even liver (never seen a liver colour?) The Malamute always has a plumed tail carried over its back.
Behaviour-
Now the Temperament can differ in the breeds, both are friendly with people but bark little so they are ineffective as guard/watch dogs, although because of there size and appearance they should deter intruders/attackers... However Malamutes can be aggressive towards other dogs.
Health problems-
Generally healthy animals, but can get hip dysphasia and occasional eye problems later in life.
My overall advice is if you were to get another dog introduce them gently if possible, they should always be supervised. Many older dogs that have established their position within your family unit/pack, dislike the arrival of a puppy or other animal. If its a puppy keep it in a protective pen for now and allow the newcomer to be sniffed and eyed up by your Jack Russell through the pen/cage.
Always give your Jack Russell the most attention, never let them feel they are being replaced, Also dont feed them together at first and feed your older dog first, over time feed them together at the same time.
Also when meeting for the first time it may be a good idea to introduce in a neutral territory, like a park. If you have confrontational problems with your Jack now when your out, get a muzzle and introduce to prevent the pup from being hurt.
Unfortunately most terriers (I've a Staff) can be scappy little dogs and Jacks are among the most renowned for it. Just introduce them slowly until a pecking order has been established.
Hope this helps
If its mainly the appareance of the dog that you like perhaps consider the Norwegian Elkhound also? Similar in size and colour/features to the Malamute but more compact.
If your serious about a rescure dog below are a couple of contacts... However I'd advise on getting a puppy or a dog no older than 18 monthsas you dont know what problems an adult dog may have?

i know they r gorgeous tho!!!! sad :( :( :(

Are you testing me because I think that's a Malamute, so very similar to the Siberian, but the dog in the pic looks large and the Malamute is the larger species of the two, being related to the Spriz family, but I could be wrong in my guess?
Now the Spriz family included another dog you like the Akita, which os a dog that was breed originally in feudal Japan for dog fighting, (also hunting and baiting) linking this to what I said before about going for the Siberian as the Malamute may argue with your Jack Russell
Claire told you I love wildlife so I could go on forever, and dogs have played a very large part in my life. If your into reading then check out a book by Jan Fennell - The Dog Listener, its very insightful.
Pity we're not living in the states as when I popped over a few months ago. I went to Wal-Mart to get some bits and on the way out there was a card up selling Siberians for $175 so about £90.. I'd have got one if I didn't think it was unfair keeping them in Quarantine for 6 months.
So far we've had a-
Red Setter - Wendy
2x Toy Poodles - Trudy & Winston
Jack Russell - Tuppence
Cavalier Spaniel - Bella
Pekingese - Sulyn
Collie/Shepard Cross - Kim
Border Collie - Bo
Golden Retriever - Tessa
Burmese Mountain Dog (Almost a bear that one) - Heidi
Yorkshire terrier - Mischief
and I currently have a Staffordshire Ball Terrier - Ellie
For me dogs are like 2/3 year old children, they love being with you and are loyal, mischievous and unpredictable... Probably explains why I love them so much.
I am really sorry to say this but they are very agresive dogs towards kids. I dont know why so if you dont have kids then go for it. We wanted to get one but were told we were unable to have one due to having two young girls.

A work colleague of mine has one (he's in America, and I visit there at least once a year).
He's absolutely gorgeous - the dog that is, not my work colleague (though his wife is rather beautiful...but that's another story altogether......)
Anyway....you could mention the dog's eyes to Colin. My friend's dog has the most stunning, piercing, unbelieveable eyes. When the dog looks at you, you're instantly mesemerised. He's gorgeous.
And I've seen your pics Lou, and 'I' think you have similarly stunning eyes too!
Mention it to Colin. I assume he's loves 'your' eyes. Hence he's bound to love the dog too.
Worth a try..... :-)

dyson hates our post man i have no mail left when hes finishd!!!! he hangs of the letterbox!!!!
Don't get another dog.....trust me one is enough and they do take up a lot of time, plus your present dog may get jealous with the new one,and from your other post you are trying for a child and that is another reason for keeping the one dog only.I'm sure you have alot of love to give but save it for the moment...

Remember huskys were initially bred to pull sleds through the snow, and even todays domesticated ones still have that propensity towards needing exercise to be happy.

Also, I've heard that they don't get on too well with the warmer weather that we get (it's all relative). Handsome dogs though.
Persuade Col to migrate with you to Alsaka and then you'll have to get a whole team of them.
