Just posting this in a fit of fury it appears we have been the victims of identity fraud after money has bin taken from our bank account without authorisation. Has this happened to anyone else and how long does it take to sort. Have notified the bank who tbh arent really being that helpful but after taking advice phoned them back n didnt let them fob us off this time. so the account is in limbo have withdrawn wat we can first as dont know how long it takes to sort.
Hello
yes has happened to me. My bank sorted it within 48 hours. They'll cancel your card etc immediately and they should refund the "in dispute" money fairly quickly. They should also refund any charges the account incurred (eg, if the fraud put you overdrawn).
It's horrible when it happens, but thankfully the banks do sort it very quickly. If they do not, pm me and I'll give you the address of a good website to go and get advice from.
What may be worth doing is figuring out where your card was cloned... Mine was at a local petrol station (as was my dads) but it could easily be online too.
Hope they sort it quickly.
Res
It's happened to me twice. On both occasions I am fairly sure my card was cloned at a petrol station. The money was taken out of my account from ATM's located in Autralia (the first time) and South Africa & Ghana (the second time). The bank were superb, they cancelled my card, got me a new one within days, refunded the amount stolen (that took about 10 days - 2 weeks as it took that long to be sure of the figures) and even transferred money to Mrs Wildfire's account so I had something to carry on with. I agree with Res, it's horrid but they do sort it quickly (it was them who alerted me the second time).
Chin up.
Happened to my SIL in a petrol station - took a few weeks to sort out. Still a pain in the arris though isn't it!
Hope its sorted out quickly for you.
Is it just me being a cynic, or is it just a tad odd that all our problems stem from petrol stations?
Methinks that there is something going on...
It's not like our petrol already isn't expensive enough...

Was a big thing about it in the news when it happened here. But yeah - all seemed to be petrol related. Not heard of it happening with other purchases?

There are often scams reported in petrol stations. When I lived in Manchester there was quite a lucrative sting going there.
It was a couple of years ago, pre-Chip and pin and the accepted advice was not to frequent the stations that made you hand over your card to be swiped - especially not through all-night window type affairs where the vendor has your card and you may not have sight of it whilst the transaction/card skimming is going on.
But that may have been remedied now due to chip and pin.
Happened to my brother due to internet purchasing - he had obviously had details cloned on a less than secure site.
It was sorted quickly though.
Good luck.
id ask earthy if i was you joys as it happened to her not to long agan
it has happened to me twice, i don't let my card out of my site now.
there is also the scam where they are using false fronts on the cash machines and reading cards and pins at the same time and they are targeting supermarket cash machines, i always check the machine to make sure it looks legit and give it a little pull on the facia to make sure that a front hasn't been put on it.

yea cant you remember i had 3 lots of money due to come out of my account, the bank couldnt stop it or do anything until it was actually taken as it wasnt fraud until then
my bank were really good and put money straight back, all i had was a form sent out afterwards to fill in, they stopped my debit card and gave me another straight away.
my mate at work unfortunately had her whole bank account wiped out, savings accounts the lot, and that was about 8 months ago, she is still having it sorted out has caused her all sorts of problems
guess it depends on the bank
E x
Yep, I had two sums of money taken out of my bank account which I only found out when I went to pay for a tank full of petrol mad
It wasn't thousands, but it was all I had at the time.
The bank refunded it immediately, thank goodness.
Can nicking your photos off here, and passing them off as your wife be classed as identity fraud? wink
Never one to miss a thread! (still mad here!)
Having your debit card details nicked isnt that uncommon and is usually quickly sorted. If you want to avoid it I suggest you never let the card out of your hand and you learn how to type in your pin while covering up the hand you are using to type it in. And yes most of the folk I know who have been victims were stung at petrol stations.
Identity theft is much nastier and can take an age to sort out.
This site will help you.

Yes - and I hope you've reported it to admin?
Not my bank account but I had a credit card cloned a few years ago. I contacted the issuer who suspended the card account immediately and I had to fill out some forms then got it sorted without too many problems. Oddly though, it was a card I used for business expenses and nothing else so I could pinpoint the only two places it could have happened (two restaurants in London) yet the card company had no interest in taking it any further.
