Idiot proof pc advice needed

Ok, this is no major thing but you have to understand what Iknow about pc's you could fit on a postage stamp.
I use windows xp pro and my internet provider is wanadoo anytime dial up. I have just had to re-install my windows due to the whole lot going mad on me and recover my wanadoo account.
Now the thing bothering me is at the very bottom right of my screen where you have the little icons I used to have a little picture of two monitors that flashed indicating I was online these seem to have dissappeared and I want them back, so if anyone has any ideas I would really appreciate them.

This is the network icon.
If you click Start, then control panel, go into network connections, right click on your dial up connection then click properties.
At the bottom of this box is "Show icon in system tray when connected", put a tick in that box.
