If they hadnt died when they did do you think that certain people would be classed as highly as they are?
Take The Doors for example,if Jim Morrison hadnt died when he did would they be so highly respected.
Kirt Cobain and Nirvana(controversial choice i know),if he hadnt killed himself would Nirvana have ever lived up to the fabulous Nevermind, who knows.
Marilyn Monroe, what would she have become if she hadnt overdosed.
And finally John Lennon(yes the ultimate one),his music was becoming quite dire when he was shot.

The God & Legend that was:
Freddie Mercury
The WHOOSH Man
Thats it, again i love Joy Division and New Order, but how many people who now regard Joy Divisions music as revolutionary or ground braking, would still do so if Ian Curtis had not commited suicide?
There again you see without the death of Kurt Cobain, would we have had Dave Grohl's brilliance eminating in QOTSA or moreso in the Foo Fighters??
Nirvana were amazing but it was the charisma of Kobain that helped them to stand out. I personally think that Grohl had/has more all-round talent.
Plays anything, writes, produces and sings. He appears as a really friendly, happy-go-lucky chap and so The Foo's don't have the 'angst factor' that appealed to so many trouble teenagers when Nirvana were in their pomp.
Sorry to leave the idol theme but thought I'd chuck in my twopennyworth. Love a bit of rock 'n' roll debate.
As for idols.......
Surely The King in every way?
Surprised no-one's mentioned Elvis yet.
Or, to throw out another one, Ayrton Senna. It's fascinating to ponder whether Senna would have been able to come to terms with Michael Schumacher in 1994. But it wasn't to be; like all the others, he died at the peak of his powers; untouchable. (Ditto Gilles Villeneuve.) Their triumphs will live on forever, their memory untarnished by declining years or skills.
You could even say the same about Abba. None of them are technically dead, but they still inhabit a world in the past, and will I'm sure never be seen again. Whilst even the Beatles saw fit to diminish their legend with a come-back!
Which raises another question: if someone takes out Busted tomorrow, will they be revered as gods too?
I mentioned Elvis.
Better than that, I gave you all a little pic of him at his mean and moodiest best...See above
CLIFF???
Haha, I'm sure The King is turning in his grave
We apply instant cult status to the dead far too easily... Tupac Shakur being a prime example of marketing over talent.
I wonder if we'd be hearing Depeche mode on the radio all the time if the medics hadn't got Dave Gahan's heart started again?
Lennons fame is lasting and not based on his later works, or even absolutely his music, but the fantastic enormity of the Beatles achievement.
All these guys who are not driven to always be in the public eye go off the boil, what was the last McCartney thing anyone can remember?
It's argueable that "The King" didn't die soon enough, (for his legend only of course).
Freddie Mercury a legend? Yes of course, dead or alive.
Most of the others were just good or not so good, and in so far as they are legends at all, they are only legends to a particular generation. I think the likes of Monroe, Sinatra, Bogart, Presley, Lennon, these are legends for all generations.
