If they hadnt died when they did do you think that certain people would be classed as highly as they are?
Take The Doors for example,if Jim Morrison hadnt died when he did would they be so highly respected.
Kirt Cobain and Nirvana(controversial choice i know),if he hadnt killed himself would Nirvana have ever lived up to the fabulous Nevermind, who knows.
Marilyn Monroe, what would she have become if she hadnt overdosed.
And finally John Lennon(yes the ultimate one),his music was becoming quite dire when he was shot.

Kurt Cobain would never have been able to live upto Nevermind ... he knew it and part of his suicide was the sheer frustration that his music had become so massively adored and to a degree "mainstream".
Marilyn Munroe, I think she would have become an old battleaxe, scarred by her treatment and depression I have a feeling she would have grown old disgracefully.
I would like to have seen James Dean develop more as an actor though.
Thats it, again i love Joy Division and New Order, but how many people who now regard Joy Divisions music as revolutionary or ground braking, would still do so if Ian Curtis had not commited suicide?

Yeah very true, but then again New Order wouldnt be without his suicide, and they are one of the best bands ever.

Very true
There again you see without the death of Kurt Cobain, would we have had Dave Grohl's brilliance eminating in QOTSA or moreso in the Foo Fighters??

True, but not quite up to Nirvana standards, and Kirt Cobain was about to do a project with R.E.M. when he blew his brains out,so who knows.

hissssssssssssssss
How can you say the Foo Fighters aren't to Nirvana standards? "sucked intake of breath" lolololololol you obviously haven't listened to enough of them.
I agree to a degree, whilst the Foo Fighters music isn't so revolutionary ground breaking they are indeed "up there". There won't ever be another Nirvana ... they were in the right place at the right time.

Bill Hick's - Now there's a legend.
He was already a legend before his untimely death.
Who knows what wonders were yet to come from him.
What I wouldnt give to hear what he would have to say about the state of the World today.
Nirvana were amazing but it was the charisma of Kobain that helped them to stand out. I personally think that Grohl had/has more all-round talent.
Plays anything, writes, produces and sings. He appears as a really friendly, happy-go-lucky chap and so The Foo's don't have the 'angst factor' that appealed to so many trouble teenagers when Nirvana were in their pomp.
Sorry to leave the idol theme but thought I'd chuck in my twopennyworth. Love a bit of rock 'n' roll debate.
As for idols.......

Surely The King in every way?
I wouldnt say that Nirvana were in the right place at the right time, they were new and exciting, its just the fact that after Nevermind the music went downhill quite a bit.
I do like Foo Fighter though, especially the newer stuff, and QOTSA are cool, even if the singer is ginger!!! lol
Steve,xxx
But for me you have to go 'heavier'
I look at the likes of Iron Maiden who have been Rocking their way around teh world for decades. They write music that they enjoy and the music they know their fans enjoy, regardless of what the critics may think, just look at the 'Rime of the Ancient Mariner' for example, over 10 minutes of rock, because they wanted to do it, not because it would make a good single! And teh result is a classic, IMHO.

Surprised no-one's mentioned Elvis yet.
Or, to throw out another one, Ayrton Senna. It's fascinating to ponder whether Senna would have been able to come to terms with Michael Schumacher in 1994. But it wasn't to be; like all the others, he died at the peak of his powers; untouchable. (Ditto Gilles Villeneuve.) Their triumphs will live on forever, their memory untarnished by declining years or skills.
You could even say the same about Abba. None of them are technically dead, but they still inhabit a world in the past, and will I'm sure never be seen again. Whilst even the Beatles saw fit to diminish their legend with a come-back!
Which raises another question: if someone takes out Busted tomorrow, will they be revered as gods too?
I mentioned Elvis.
Better than that, I gave you all a little pic of him at his mean and moodiest best...See above
Sorry, I thought that was Cliff Richard. redface

Oh god, in that case let them carry on and die out naturally!!!!! lol
I totally agree with Senna, i for one would have loved to have seen him do battle with Schuey, for that matter those two, Mansell, Prost and the Hills, all at their prime in identical cars, i'd have paid to watch that one!! smile
CLIFF???
Haha, I'm sure The King is turning in his grave
We apply instant cult status to the dead far too easily... Tupac Shakur being a prime example of marketing over talent.
I wonder if we'd be hearing Depeche mode on the radio all the time if the medics hadn't got Dave Gahan's heart started again?

I agree, i love DM, have been to see them live 3 times now and think they are better live than recorded, although i never did get into the last album, probably because as yet i don't have it. I would love to hear more of them on the radio.
Lennons fame is lasting and not based on his later works, or even absolutely his music, but the fantastic enormity of the Beatles achievement.
All these guys who are not driven to always be in the public eye go off the boil, what was the last McCartney thing anyone can remember?
It's argueable that "The King" didn't die soon enough, (for his legend only of course).
Freddie Mercury a legend? Yes of course, dead or alive.
Most of the others were just good or not so good, and in so far as they are legends at all, they are only legends to a particular generation. I think the likes of Monroe, Sinatra, Bogart, Presley, Lennon, these are legends for all generations.

So very true,Depeche Mode are a fantastic band that don't get the recognition they deserve
