If I disagree with something on here I'll say so - but it's when it results in personal insults that the problems arise...........personal snipes

There's no need for any personal abuse, I do get the feeling that some, alot actually, people would prefer if we were all "just like them"!!

And then there are those who believe that only their opinion is valid confused
Bit like real life isn't it?
Those who get into the personal jibes and insults during an argument are merely showing their inability for reasoned discussion are they not?
ie. the dummy has well and truly been spat lol

This may be a first - but I think I have to agree with you on that one. confused
No - wait! It's only a 90% agree (phew)
I am not too sure about the jibe bit - sometimes when you know what they are saying is not what they said earlier (so to speak) or what they are stating is known to be untrue - then sometimes a quick 'prod' to prompt the memory can be useful.
Did you know that 'jibe' can also mean to agree smile

I think those who have articulate ability, have the ability to 'prod' someones memory without resulting to personal insult, be it quick or otherwise.
Jibe, don't we all change our minds about something sometime. What is the point of talking if there is no chance of swinging the others opinion, or one's own. I have had to reset my sails, more than once, after someone has pointed something out to me, and thank you to them.
Defend your point to the best of your ablity, but give it up with grace when proven wrong.

Thats, I suppose, the point exactly.
Without reasoned and indeed pasionate discussion then nothing can progress.
We dont have to all agree but we can disagree like adults should and not resort to some of the needless petty abuse, however thinly disguised, we see on a frequent basis confused

Not a big stick ??
Thats where I'm going wrong then..... :P
Part of the problem is the mindsets we as people can into. The illusion we think we know where people are coming from just because they have posted a few other things on a website.
If you decide you don't like someone, you will read what they write with a different slant to the same thing being written by someone you do like.
Even without there being any personal intent behind some comments... one person's comedian is another person's arrogant bastard. Just depends on whether you have formed an opinion on the person and if you have what that opinion is.
I truly cannot remember from one day to the next the vast majority of what I have agreed with or disagreed with (as in - who wrote it). I find it funny when you meet someone and they start talking about a thread which was running several months ago and you had posted something or other as a general reply ... then they turn around and say "I remember when you gave me a right slating but I am glad you're OK with me now" as if it is always personal if two people have different opinions.
Yes there are some people I have opinions about (not many) but still most of the time my opinions are about the subject not the person - even when it is pointing out that they are talking bollox (I define bollox as either - making statements which have not taken into account factors which have been exposed to them, blatant hypocrisy or just plain bullshit lying bollox).

MOD HAT ON
I have removed a number of posts which threaten to bring about an IMMEDIATE 24 hour ban if they are repeated. I have warned the offending party/parties by PM this morning and will have no hesitation in implenting the bans if there is ANY repetition or public comment about it.

i have to say that argument need not be aggressive and abusive.
ive spent much of my adult working life ( and as a student) "arguing " points , laws, versions of events and the rights and wrongs of many subjects.... sometimes ive had to agrue points that i know im bound to lose , that ethically i dont agree with and that have caused me to be seen as a bad person ..... i dont think that there is a more lonley place to be sometimes when you're on one side of the fence and the whole world seems to be on the other.
ive been congratulated on many occasions for doing my best, and remaining loyal to my cause ... even if i havnt stood a cat in hells chance of my argument being accepted.
one thing that cant be argued ( pardon the pun) are the feelings one has inside when the muck is flying .... and the hardest thing to do is not let emotions get the better of you do....youve lost...
there is therefore a definate skill in arguing.......and it often makes me upset to see people suffer as a result of their lack of skill.....
theres a skill too in abusing/mocking/denegrating someones argument without it appearing on the face of it to do so... which i have often found is more corrosive than straight forward abusing/mocking/denegrating.
so , in my opnion its not the subject matter that causes the problems... its the attitude u display ............ and knowing when to shut up that counts.

well its hard when youre the type that likes to have the last word......
although i do have some regard for the phrase "whatever"... thats priceless sometimes for tipping those you say it to over the edge......which is another favourite to try and win an argument..

So do you have regard for it or not? As you seem to contradict your previous point by suggesting it is useful to get one over on someone and wide them up? confused
May be you should have taken on board your own closing statement lol

You sound like a brief?
I was referring to having an argument, disagreement, dispute call it what you like, about things that you genuinely believe in and would like to convince the world of your point.
I think it's a far more interesting and stimulating way to live your life than"agreeing to all disagree and let's all be happy"
Just for the record I don't believe it's necessary to have any insults when having a good disagreement confused
In matters of taste I am happy to agree to disagree. In matters of fact or action I am less likely to agree to disagree, but it depends a lot on what, who and why I am having the argument. I use the word argument in the sense that all parties are putting forward facts and view, not a shouting match.
