I'm looking to make a lemon meringue pie this evening, but have always failed in the past. The meringue never seems to come out light, stiff and crisp, it generally ends up very thin and still a bit wet. Do you think the problem is in the preperation of the egg whites alone, or do you think that there might also be a problem with cooking temperature? dunno

Oh my goodness! :shock:
I've just got oin and looked at the news - after 2 text messages from friends on here.
It all sounds very worrying and terrible. sad

I am hoping that the new owners will take the time to listen to everyone here. I am hoping that they will take people's views into account. After all, if they change it too much and we all leave, that won't benefit them at all will it?
I thinkl the new owners should come to the next few munches - or maybe we should hold an open meeting or something?
Oh. I just hate this :(

A few people have asked who the company is that has purchased this site.
Maybe I am wrong, but I think it is a requirement of the E-Commerce Directive / Electronic Commerce Regulations 2002 that this information has to be included on the site.
The UK version states as follows :
"6. - (1) A person providing an information society service shall make available to the recipient of the service and any relevant enforcement authority, in a form and manner which is easily, directly and permanently accessible, the following information -
(a) the name of the service provider;
(b) the geographic address at which the service provider is established;
(c) the details of the service provider, including his electronic mail address, which make it possible to contact him rapidly and communicate with him in a direct and effective manner;
(d) where the service provider is registered in a trade or similar register available to the public, details of the register in which the service provider is entered and his registration number, or equivalent means of identification in that register;"
When they refer to 'information society service' that they mean businesses operating on the web, which a commercial version of Swinging Heaven would most definately be.
I am only mentioning this as I am really curious to find out who the new company is. Come on Elliott, tell tell tell.

I've not been around too much lately so I can't speak on behalf of anyone.
None of us have any rights here at all so indignant questions about anything are just dispersed vapour. We pay for nothing so we are entitled to nothing. Geddit?
I have often wondered how 'Mark' ever managed to keep the place going for nothing - especially when, on occasions, we behaved like a bunch of juvenile prats. It must have been a real chore and we owe him a lot of thanks for doing it as long as he did. My guess is that the secrecy thing was a condition of the prospective owners - understandable.
Change is always uncomfortable but, as we have no rights, then we have to accept it. The test of success will be the quality of the product. The rub is that the definition of success may very well be different now to what it was before - it will after all be the new owners vision of success not necessarily the one we have grown to accept over the last 2-3 years. This, again we have to accept.
The sad thing here is that there are real friendships at stake. So many friends made and possibly new ones in prospect - now at risk to some degree. But then - if the new owners don't value that - and why should they - then it could be very sad indeed. But - we have no rights so.............
Grin and bear it folks. For those who feel seriously at risk with photographic material posted, which is of (commercial?) value - I say get it off quick.

the meringue bit of lemon meringue pie : you must set your oven at 150c. Then when you're going to put the meringue in, reduce the temp. to 140c. Simple way to get a nice thin wafery, crisp meringue with a marshmallowy toffee-like inside. I think definitely cooking remp. that needs adjusting. Trust me, I make lemon meringue pies and strawberry pavlovas on a regular basis. biggrin

Calista - You have my word we will listen and respect everyones input, we are not looking to change the essence of the site at all, after all as you state, we would not risk out invetsement at all, its just something we will have to proove in time - theres nothing i want more than to build up a good trust with the SH community.
Morbius - i know you meant a social event, but if i came to derby, i would have to drive, and that involves NOT drinking, and i reallllllly need a drink biggrin

davej - i don't think you are whisking the egg whites enough, and possibly a high temp, it needs to cook through, just not on the outside otherwise it won't bulk up :)
Tim and Lene - It would be up to Martin or Steve to say that, i am not allowed :) To be perfectly honest it wouln't make the slightest difference to you as you won't know it, and the only stuff you can find on the web is mobile phone related stuff :) But as i say, its up to the gaffers.

Why thankyou Maia and elliot, we will give your suggestions a try, personally they make far more sense than mrs davej's idea of taking our chickens off of thier corn feed and switching them to a strict diet of flumps and marshmallows, in an effort to make them lay lighter fluffier eggs.

Elliott - hope the beer is good.
Were you expecting this onslaught?
Seems to me that once everyone, including me earlier, have voiced there concerns over this weekend then you need to keep us regularly updated on what you are doing and what effect it will have. Perphaps even start threads about your plans and see if any of the regulars have ideas in which they can help.
Not much anyone can do but say hope you get to understand this 'community' before you make any big changes and keep us informed.

There are some very sensible views among the replies to this thread, optimistic, intelligent, practical, welcoming. But as usual some very naive and simply agressive responses. The positively cold and selfish comments originate from the hardcore members, SOME of who are unknowingly suffering from delusion based in their institutionalisation. There exists between you an agression towards moderators misunderstand and kick members without giving any opportunity for explanation. While allowing oldies to pretty much do as they please.
I believe this can only be a good thing, shaking this community by its roots, clearing out the deadwood. Breaking down your insular boundaries.
Have you thought this take over may even actually stop the nuisances that visit this free site on a regular basis. That you spend an awful lot of time discussing.

I'm in the wait and see camp on the changes to the site, but if you do decide at some time you want my money in future then I will expect the staff of Company X to be out and about scouting dogging locations for us! lol

Three serious points though:

Moderators
As you are now running SH as a commercial, profit making (you hope) business do you really intend to use voluntary staff on the site with no offer of any compensation for their time? This is hugely naive imho and I'm not sure if it's legal to do so unless you are a charity - but legal or not, it's certainly not appropriate.
3.
Failure to turn SH into a profitable business quickly enough
If you fail to make SH commercially successful, what will happen? Will the community be offered first refusal to take over the site? what is the timescale you've set in your business plan to break even/show profit? If you fail, will you take a community view and look for someone to keep it going even if you lose out financially or will you take a business view and simply close the site?
Hopefully this won't be the case but it would good to know what your plans are.

I agree with Tune - this is the way the internet has been for the ten years I've been participating in various net communities, forums and chat sites. You never know from one day to the next whether any site is going to be the same or undergo drastic changes, or even be there at all. I have been part of communities that virtually broke up overnight, mainly thanks to the vagaries of MSN and , so I never expect anything to stay the same for long. I think we've been incredibly lucky that this community has been so successful for as long as it has been: two and a half years.
All we can do is keep sticking together here, letting the owners know what we think, and see what actually happens. Owners' ideas can change from one day to the next.

TallFunLondon - To be honest i didnt not expect this at all, i underestimated how tight this community is, and wish i handled things a lot differently.

Alexandra - Calculating the distance between members, we will even show the locations roughly on a map (by that i mean pinpoint town, not you exact address, as that is dataprotection smile
