Do you, or have you, had someone in your life...family, friend or otherwise..who has been sooo influential in your life that you could attribute some, or even all of who you are directly to them ?
I dont mean simply 'parents being parents' (although its not to be underestimated) , I mean someone who's really impacted on your life outside of 'usual' roles... a teacher perhaps, an ex, someone professional, like famous people are role models to the young etc etc
I'm posting this not as a melancholy thread, but for people to share their experiences about those who have influenced them, in good ways or bad, or completely changed you life. Maybe its your partner, or your children?
I had the 'summoning family' phone call yesterday telling me the most influential person in my life probably wont last through the weekend with stage-end cancer, and as I'm still sitting here waiting for other family members to arrive before the mafia starts mobilising Northwards, there's always a chance I wont get to tell her just how much she changed the course of 'how things were to be' for me, and to say thankyou. Its certainly a time for reflection.
But like I say, this isnt melancholy, its a positive thread, where you can acknowledge the person who's been the biggest positive influence in your life..and if you can, give them a call eh?
Over to you.
my ex boss
he was like having a 2nd dad a lot of the time, he went through my marriage break up, my ex getting cancer, my struggle with my studies, losing my dogs. in the five yrs i worked for him he was great, i admired and respected him completely, and the two since just havent measured up at all
he still rings me most month ends to gloat that he doesnt have to do them anymore
Earthy xx

You post has made me wonder about that, almost need, to speak to loved ones who are near passing away.
This very special woman obviously knows how you feel, how grateful you are - if you can ooze so much raw emotion and love from a written post, you certainly wouldn't be able to hide it from this lady kiss
But even so, people always seem driven to reiterate things to people - or if it's a sudden death, many times people go through the "but I didn't tell them that, I should've told em sooner" stage ......... why? These people have been a big part of our lives, they know how we feel, just like we know how they feel about us, but still there's a need to tell them! dunno
I like to think that it's in our genes, for some unknown reason we feel the need to give love, gratitude and thanks directly to someone on their death bed ...... I would love to know the reason for this need, I'm hoping that the reason is on a higher level than I'm inclined to believe in.
OK, just deleted off two mega paragraphs about my parents and my children, cos you specifically said someone outside that direct circle.
So I'll say my Aunt - she's been an absolutel inspiration to me. Always a very girly lady, rather mild, as funny as hell, daft as a brush ...... but one of the strongest people I've ever met.
She's been dealt some of the most awful blows that life can throw at her - and yet she still has her personality, her soul, her spirit. I'm very close to her, and do often see the utter sorrow in her eyes, or hear it in her voice, but she won't let it beat her. She's one of these people that's been given life, and my golly, she's gonna bluddy live it, whatever gets thrown at her.
She's an inspiration, she's also a big influence on what she says, her advice is second to none - very much one of them people that talks to you until you've kind of given yourself the advice. Then once she's done that, she'll offer full support on decisions that are made.
She's wonderful ....... she's my Aunty :smug: :rose:
What a cracking trio of posts from a cracking trio (God I love this place for the pure quality of the people in it).
I had thought of posting something about some Dutch people I have worked with. I have found them to be most engaging and influential but I guess that's not the purpose of the thread.
Brain's a bit addled at the mo' - will get back with a more personal insight.
.
One of mine used to be in this community, and changed my life a lot. I won't go into details as it's personal and difficult to explain it, but she really did change my life. People who know me will know who she is, and will know how special she is biggrin I still get the occassional Email from her and it's great to hear from her every time.
I really must send her a decent size email later. :D
Nice one DF
My grandfather...without doubt the most influential person in my life...the great architect himself
Others have had a dramatic effect but none even close to my grandad, he helped a rough stone become a better person....still miss him years after he passed away

yes it is Choon! if they, or a particular person, has been an inspiration to you, tell us
Missy - I think I might have been wrong to try to exclude the people who are immediately close to us (parents, children, partner) because obviously it is they who have the most direct influence...so, please, feel free! kiss
But I also remember, for example, a teacher, two in fact, at school, who's words and actions had a major impact on me at that time...1 told me I'd never achieve anything & the only places I was destined for was a factory or prison . That one thing has stayed with me for years - to the point of laughing my ass off to myself while blowing up and laminating an A3 size Graduation with BA Honours photo from uni and posting it to him.. with love rotflmao. And the second, who despite having completely despaired of me, gave me a fiver cos he instinctively knew I needed it. (Thankyou.)
So, its anyone really - from obscure folk who just walk into your life & right back out of it again but leave their footprints behind, to those who are immediately close to us through love & family smile
My brother taught me that some things in life that need to be fought for no matter how much fear or a sense of reality might be holidng you back.
My ex-girlfriend was there for me (during our relationship) when i was going through hell, she took me out of the dark and sent me on the way to becoming someone.
My current tutor showed me that i'm smart and capable enough to do some amazing work, he told me one day that its hard to teach someone thats almost his equal minus life experiance. He's also put up with me through all the shit thats been thrown at me lately.
A certain woman has given me some great advice, some of which i follow and given me the kick up the back side i needed to get me to start putting my education back in order.
I've been influenced by alot of people, i've grown up alot in the past year (i know some people here will dissagree with that) i've learnt alot of things and i think i've become a stronger person. I've learnt that i am what i am, and i'm glad.

No, I think you're right in the first place, it gives a cracking thread more food for thought when you can't state the obvious biggrin
I can (and do) waffle on about kids/parents/partner all the time ........ they have so much of an impact on my life that the more subtle people get wrongly overlooked.
The thread made me sit back and think - and, until now, I didn't realise how much of an impact my Aunt has on my life.
Another influential person in my life is my mate Julie!! A total daredevil and when we were younger, she was always dragging me into stuff. She was the one, twenty odd years ago, that 'persuaded' me that jumping out a plane at 4000 ft was a bluddy brill idea  OK for her, but not funny at all for someone who starts shaking at two rungs up a ladder
She's given me so many memories from childhood up until the present. Her constant pushing herself has been a big influence on me - certainly pushed me at times when I've been nervous about something!!
My mate Julie :smug: :rose:

ah! now that is a bloody good point (or 3 lol)
thankyou
At a crazy time in my life a very special man came into my life. He was always calm always reasonable and able to be so damned accepting and philosophical about everything. He stood out like a sore thumb. People thought he was so weird,so did i. But to talk with he was 'inspirational and insightful'.
When i needed him he was there. He let me cry and shout, laugh and be melancholic taught me patience and humility (both of which i need far more of nowadays) I havent seen him now for 16 years but if i need to step back and collect my thoughts i think of him and it helps immeasurably.
No it isnt Jesus or some dope smoking hippy (though he would of smiled at the hippy bit). He was just a mate that i had for a few years one i wish my wife and kids could of met.
Almost a lump in my throat thinking about the guy!
Excellent thread DF
My late and very much missed Dad was the biggest influence on my life. He taught me right from wrong but allowed me to learn some of it by my own mistakes, never let on his disappointment ( though I know there were times he was ) encouraged me to find my own path and supported me every step of the way. He was always there when I needed advice, money or just good company. A gentle man with a beautiful soul and not a day goes by, even 3 years on that I wish he was still with us
My other biggest inspiration is my best mate. He was there for me when my marriage broke down, lets me soak his shirt in tears when I need to, put me back on my feet again and is always ready for a chat, cuppa and company. He's never judgemental, gives me great advice, is highly intelligent, a good laugh and great to be with. He's my soulmate and I love him dearly.
oh yeah, and I get to shag him too

you still young and have a lot to learn but then again dont we all, im still learning something new every day but its how we use that knowledge that defines us. Keep going you are getting there
I have two.. my grandfather who unfortunately passed away a few years back and I miss him daily, and my husband. Both have taught me things that I don't really need to go into.
My dad and I don't see or speak to each other. My grandfather was more like a Dad to me and I still find myself going to his grave and speaking to him.
Ok I'm away now.. lovely thread by the way Dark xx
Great thread DF - I was talking to somebody about this exact subject the other day!
I would say that two people have really impacted on me greatly.
Firstly would be my Grandfather. I had a very difficuly home life as a child and we became very close and he was like a father to me and more.
I spent a lot of time with my Grandparents and even lived with them for a while, my Grandad and I used to go fishing and he used to help me with my school work etc.
He was such a decent man and I never heard one person say a bad word about him - EVER! He died when I was 22 but I still think of him a lot.
--------------------------------------------------
Secondly would be my music teacher at school. She pushed me to persue things where as my parents had little inclination or clue. She got me an audition for the National Youth Orchestra and took me to competitions etc. She was also the reason I got a music scholarship at a girls school in Cambrige. It was great for my self esteem and development. She still teaches at the same place and I keep saying that I'm going to go back and thank her, I really must.
I've thought long and hard about this over a cuppa. I've come to the conclusion that it is'nt just one person for me. These are who they are and why:
STORMWALKER - I have known him nearly all my life. I spent my childhood years looking up to him as some sort of hero as he is 3 years older than me and I thought he was wonderful and used to spend all my time trying (and failing) to impress him. Later, I was inspired further by him when he left the country to live abroad and I was amazed at how brave that was. For the last 13 years we have been married so that has obvious connotations on how that has changed my life, but it has all been for the better.
M&J - These are our twin boys who did'nt survive as they were born too early. They changed my life in a huge way both emotionally and physically. I always think of myself as Mrs average. Being pregnant with twins certainly did'nt feel average, neither did losing them or the subsequent learning to live with it afterwards. They made me realise how much you can take your children for granted and also made me realise that if I can cope with their loss I can just about cope with anything. If I do things now I often wonder are they proud of me. So they still have an imput in my life in their own small way.
A FRIEND- I met her about 16 years ago and we very slowly became friends. We don't see so much of each other now as life gets in the way too much. I truly believe that sometimes we have an angel who looks after us on earth for the time that we need them and she was mine at the time I needed her most.
Love
Fire xxxx
PS Have just phoned my friend who is poorly and am just on my way to see her!! thanks Dark
well, I dunno what to say lol
I'm just in awe really of everyone who's posted so far - its not one of those threads where (again) people are posting replies to individual posts...sometimes its enough just to share, read & take in the 'realness' of people's experiences isnt it? I'd kinda like to respond to everyone individually, but wont, but you should know I've got hairs on the back of my neck sticking up and the respectometer going through the roof over here  worship
please continue
I really don’t want to sound bitter about this, but I cannot seriously think of anyone who had a major influence on me during my formative years beyond the participants in the education system and the usual sporadic interests in fashion and music. My parents did a reasonably good job of bringing the four of us up, but for the purposes of this thread their influence can be ignored.
All this changed just over 5 years ago though when a new person came into my life and changed my behaviour, my attitude and my perception of everything. He was a bouncing baby boy and although he was our third born, he was something special. He was born at 25 weeks and weighed After seeing him fight and struggle and fight some more every day over the 14 weeks he was in hospital I realised that the challenges and problems that I had (or imagined that I had) were really insignificant.
Just in case the above sounds callous, our other 2 boys are indeed special also and I did change significantly after our first boy was born 11 years ago (who incidentally was born at 32 weeks and weighed in at a massive 3lb!) … but the intensity of the experience with our third born was life changing. He is an extremely loving but quite naughty defiant child now, but I am firmly of the opinion that it is this attitude that got him through those early weeks.
There is one other thing thats been a BIG influence on me and its this. Its nothing special lyrically but i thinks its about growing up/growing old and figuring out who your friends are.
If you had a bad time at one of my parties. Well I wouldn’t expect to be seeing you soon and that’s fine. You have to know who what and why. Those things make you happy. You have to know that a second guess ain’t worth the time. Just some words of advice. Maybe you’ve heard them before but here goes. Just be true to yourself if it lands you in hell well at least now you know. Loud and clear is your heart. Big and bright are the places you might someday go with one million things holding you down. Why you’re one of those things I don’t know. No big deal gotta go. If you’re up to your ears in blood, sweat and wasted years. I’m hoping your going to open your throat and just scream. You have to know who and why. Which ones miss you when you die. You have to know that a second guess ain’t worth the self in your eyes. It just sits on my shoulders. You’re breaking my neck. We get crazy with age. Now you’re under my bed and its dark all the time, all the time.
Thats put things in perspective for me more than a few times.

Women.
Without too much thought, and calculations - I think I've probably had 6 or 7 what I would call LTR/Marriages. The actual timescale duration of each is pretty much irrelevant; but each one of them has allowed and some encouraged me to find and be myself - to varying degrees. Each of them has "stiffled" me - by degree. One - NO; two, even tried to "control" or "change" me. All of that in itself played a huge part in me becoming who/what I am. And my attitude to people. Only you the reader can say what my attitude to people actually is.
Men.
I don't think I've met any influential men since I left the Army. That's not a dig, it's probably because I haven't been in any situations since then that would warrant "influence"
But there were three.
One was crippled when a LandRover he was driving overturned in what was Rhodesia, around the time following "independence". It was so hot we had removed the spare wheel from it's usual position, vertical behind the driver (acted as a rollover bar) so the Rovers could run stripped down. He taught me that "it's all good"
One was killed when a tank he was commanding, rolled over. Against all his training and beliefs, he tried to jump clear and was cut almost perfectly in half around the waist. He'd been a commander/instructor for the previous 8 or 9 years. He taught me that "life's a bastard"
One was a helicopter pilot from AAC. He would be in the bar of a cellar disco/club at one of the Belfast hospitals drinking vodka until 3/4 in the morning. At 6, he's be flying us on border patrols between North and South, including hedge hopping and a couple of other sphincter twitching "manoeuvres" He taught me to "not sweat the big stuff"
What did all three of them "give" me ?
Again - attitude. An attitude toward life, and the value of human life. That - I'll keep to myself wink
Animals.
With animals, I found a new peace. And honesty - on a very base level. What did they give me ? A better understanding, on a much deeper level than before, of "human nature"

Well . . . . .
'while you're down there wink
A friend - we started out as enemies when I slept with her boyfriend.
We became friends when we met at the GUM clinic after finding out said boyfriend had HIV, and we both turned up for testing at the same time.
Hers came back positive, mine negative. She had a year old baby. Who when tested also turned out positive. Her family wanted nothing more to do with her, or her baby. I was one of few friends who stood by her.
She has taught me, that no matter what goes wrong, it can be overcome. She is now an active fighter for people with HIV and AIDS. As well as encouraging her daughter to grow up and be the best she can in life. Despite her illness.

Blimey, what a time for this thread to pop up agian.
She died on the Monday after posting this thread & I never did get chance to say my piece before she slipped into morphine-induced oblivion. Wish I'd never gone, tbh, but I wont remember her like that.
What I will remember is a woman with courage & conviction of her beliefs, a fighter, with a fire in her more bright than mine will ever be, the stalwart of the family who would never allow herself to be a doormat, pander to the demands of others, or compromise her principals to fit in with other's expectations & who held her head high regardless of what life threw her way and stuck two fingers up at the world & what was considered the 'acceptable way' on an almost daily basis lol This woman had wings ffs! great big diamond tipped titatium things that would wrap protectively around those who needed them without want of thanks or anything back in return - in all, a truly formidable woman who earnt and deserves my utmost respect and warmest affections. RIP.
Influential? not half! I hope the footprints she left on me help me walk in her shoes one day.

Darkfire, she sounds much like Mr W's much missed Nan. If there is an after, i'm sure they'll get on.
All i can say to a lot of people in this thread is "wow"
and i am sorry i missed this thread first time round...
I think i can look to two people so much that without those two people i think i can honestly say hand on heart I wouldn't be the person i am today.. and will take it so far as to say that without these people I don't think i would be alive today........
I was a cocky S.O.B when i was running around new york as a kid, I wound so many people up the wrong way and hung around with so many bad people...... something that i am not extremely proud of.... and it took people i knew getting killed for me to actually listen to people, i was in a phase where i thought i was bulletproof so to speak......
it took 2 family friends (1 actually took me into a morgue, showed me a body..looked at me and said if i didn't change that is where i would end up) to get me to leave new york, i was going to stay there with my dad, it shook my foundations...
then when i got here i had some great people take me under there wings and i slowly began to change, pay more attention at school, i feel like i had been given a 2nd chance to make something of my life..... i swore i would do the same for people if i had the oppertunity..
