Gay pubs across London are to observe a minute's silence for victims of homophobia, organisers of the first International Day Against Homophobia (IDAHO) are hoping.
The silence will mark the first celebration of the event, scheduled for 17th May, which aims to unite international voices in condemning anti-gay behaviour.
The capital is set to fall silent next week as other cities show their support for the fight against homophobia.
And as well as the larger western countries, smaller states not necessarily known for their pro-gay stance will be involved.
In Latvia, a hot air balloon displaying an anti-homophobia message is expected to travel across the country, while Bulgaria will host an Equality Walk in the capital, Sofia.
In Sri Lanka, a major human rights publication will be published to coincide with the day.
Elsewhere in London, a protest against Saudi Arabia will be held outside the country's embassy.
The event's organisers say widespread support will help pressurise countries that still view homosexuality as an illegal act to look again at their legislation.
They add that the protests and initiatives that will be held in relatively accepting countries will be contrasted with the "silence" in countries where such events would result in imprisonment or death.
The date of the day was chosen because of its significance in the "gay rights time line", they add.
On 17th May 1990, the World Health Organisation dropped homosexuality from its list of mental disorders, paving the way for many governments to introduce laws offering protecting to lesbian and gay people for the first time.
Organisers of the IDAHO event have drawn up a petition, that will be delivered to the United Nations next week. To sign it before then, visit

We were only talking about how living in a large city such as Manchester or Leeds can cloud how the rest of the country is.
I for one feel very privaledged to live in a place where I can be myself without fear of persecution, torture, imprisonment or worse. Ok a bit of teasing from you lot, I can handle that... I think confused but this issue is one to be thought about as homophobia is still alive and well sad
